My wife just received this email minutes ago.
As I've mentioned in another thread, we put in for the Methow Second Deer tag in hopes of pruning a whitetail from the Valley.
The only way this permit will be used is on a whitetail doe.
Period.
Our family will NOT be killing Mule Deer does in the Methow.

Second Deer - 1303**, 1326, 1329, 1330 (Must purchase a second deer tag)
Deer Youth - 1508, 1511, 1512, 1558, 1559

In response to the Carlton Complex fires, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will be allowing more of these permits to be issued. All of these special permits will also give you the option to purchase a second deer tag in your drawn special permit hunt.
To see the hunt choice you are drawn for use your Wild ID to log in at: https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/wa/specialhuntlookup .
The dates for the above hunt choices have been modified as well. The new dates are Oct 11-31 and Nov. 21-30.
** In addition, special permits for Hunt Choice 1303 Methow will be valid for all public lands open to hunting and private lands with the owner's permission in GMUs 224, 239, and 242.
WDFW will not be mailing special permit cards for this opportunity. To participate, you must go to your local license dealer with your WILD ID:
To get the permit for the hunt choice for which you are drawn you will need to purchase a "substitute special permit" for a $0.50 dealer fee. If you don't participate in this opportunity your points for the subsequent drawing special permit hunts will be restored by March 2, 2015.
To purchase a second deer tag in your current special permit hunt for $43.40 for residents and $252.40 for nonresidents.
Both of these items will be available at license dealers starting Thursday, September 25, 2014.

SELECTED!!!!!!!

Just received the same email... Kind of on the fence about filling it
-
I don't feel bad tagging a whitetail doe... that's my plan at least. selected.
-
Does anyone know the total number of permits that are going to be issued?
-
Sounds so far like everyone that put in for it may have drawn it. 3 people I know so far have been selected. Not sure what to think about it.
-
Two per person if they chose to buy second tag.
-
didnt they say 200 or so permits earlier?
-
Two per person if they chose to buy second tag.
One tag, just called a second deer tag for specified doe. You have to buy the extra tag for $43.ish. Therefore you can still fill your regular season buck tag. That's how I read it.
-
i drew the 2nd tag for Spokane North and just got the same email, having put in for the Methow hunt as well. I already bought my 2nd tag but have not filled it. With this email, does that mean I order another permit and can hunt both areas? :dunno:

Yes. You will have two permits, and two tags. You could use your primary tag with the Methow hunt if you chose to.
-
I just got the same email. I've got a 2nd deer (whitetail doe only) permit for Chiliwist (GMU 239). I'm on the fence about buying the permit. My regular spots in that unit are toast. I plan to buck hunt up the valley around my cabin near Winthrop.
Please PM me if you have any suggestions on where I can go to take a whitetail doe in 239. Any help would be appreciated.
-
My son drew a youth permit for Chiliwist unit. It shows two sets of dates. Do you get to hunt both time frames or do they choose dates for you? It's his first year hunting so I'm sure I will take him.
-
This sucks! :bdid:

Its open like a general season and a late season kind of thing so you can hunt either season or both
-
12yr old son drew a youth antlerless and a second deer tag. Looks like 2 antlerless whitetails for his first deer.
-
This sucks! :bdid:
I agree it sucks but what's the alternative? Let hundreds of deer starve to death because of over grazing available winter ground? Even with aggressive feeding it would be an ugly winter for the Methow herd IMO.
-
My little girl was selected for alta. Now she will do her part to take a whitetail doe out of Antoine.

I've got problem with that.
-
What if we have a super mild winter? What if the deer cross the river to better forage? Seems irresponsible to condemn them through this hunt without even giving them a chance. :dunno:
-
Open it to either sex whitetail all winter. That may help a bit. :chuckle:
-

Problem solved!
-
Be sure to shoot every coyote you see over any deer you may take. Coyotes will eat good this winter no matter how mild it is. They will be running deer all winter so let's do our part to help all all the critters this winter. The whitetail population will certainly rebound faster than the mule deer, if you are a hunter concerned about those kinds of things think twice or more before taking a mule deer :twocents:.
-
I need clarification. I received this very email.
I was not selected for the units specified but rather whidbey.
Does this mean i can have my general tag,my whidbey tag, and now buy this tag on top of those?
I am getting a very bad (worse) feeling about this.

Alot of folks agree that this sucks including myself, there are alot of other ideas, options, reasons, thaughts etc.ect on the other anterless methow thread in the deer hunting section.....this is a crying shame! Nothin wrong with taking out the white tails but were gonna need all the breeding stock mulie does we can muster comming out the back end of this winter..... :twocents:

Speaking of that my son saw a coyote chasing 3 doe's last weekend in twisp. Could not get close enough to shoot. Good reason as any to pack a pistol i suppose

Nope.
Called WDFW this AM, you can hunt with your general tag you buy to put in for permits for general deer season for buck or doe in drawn unit, or use this tag plus second deer tag to get two does in drawn unit during both hunt dates.
But keep in mind you have to login into the permit draw to see what area they drew you for the special permit for that you weren't draw for this spring the first time. So my daughter didn't get drawn this spring, so I logged back in last night after getting the email and she was selected for Pearrygin for this special hunt.
-
Better to eat the doe permit.
-
I can understand folks excitement over their children getting a chance to utilize this tag. That's about the only positive I see from this. However, I think its another blunder by the WDFW. :( Its another sad day for the Methow Valley
-
I got my email last night and will only use it on a whitetail doe. Every mule deer in the valley deserves as good of a chance as they can get, so I'll remove one invasive species from the mix for them. Maybe 2....
-
Thank you 7mm.
-
I got this email today and I called to verify what it means. I had already been drawn for a second deer tag on Whidby island so I should not have gotten the email. So if you already got drawn for a second tag, you can not buy another for these hunt's. It is only for whitetail does, so you all can settle down about mulie does being shot. Make sure you all know the difference before you pull the trigger. There will be a lot of youth hunters over there as well so make sure they can properly identify a white tail doe before pulling the trigger.

Ripper,
Are you sure the extra permits will only be for whitetail? It sure didn't sound that way in the latest news release they put out:
WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE
NEWS RELEASE
600 Capitol Way North, Olympia, WA 98501-1091
September 17, 2014
Contact: Jim Brown or Matt Monda, (509) 754-4624
Hunting and fishing outlook still good
in the wake of Carlton Complex wildfire
OLYMPIA - Plenty of hunting, fishing, and other recreational opportunities are still available in north central Washington despite this summer's wildfires and mudslides. Most areas that were temporarily closed are now accessible.
"Contrary to what some might think, most of Okanogan County did not burn," said Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) North Central Regional Director Jim Brown. "Many great outdoor opportunities remain, even in some areas touched by the fires. Most people's hunting and fishing trips will be as enjoyable as ever."
WDFW wildlife areas and water access sites in the north central region are open, and information about recreation on federal lands is available from the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest: http://www.fs.usda.gov (http://www.fs.usda.gov)./detail/okawen/home/?cid=stelprd3812214.
The Carlton Complex Fire burned more than 250,000 acres - about 400 square miles - including lands in the Methow and Okanogan river valleys that have provided much of the winter range for a herd of 14,000 mule deer. The herd includes year-round resident deer as well as "high-country" animals that move to lower elevations in the winter.
Brown said natural regeneration of the burned wildlife habitat has already begun, but the area will not be able to support the usual number of deer this winter. WDFW wildlife biologists estimate reducing the population by 7 percent will improve long-term range restoration as well as the herd's overall vitality.
Matt Monda, WDFW regional wildlife manager, said the department will issue more special hunting permits to help reduce the number of deer to a level that the remaining winter range can support.
"We're being conservative in reducing the size of the herd because we are still assessing the amount of regrowth that is occurring, and we can't predict winter conditions," he said. "The additional deer harvest will be tightly controlled."
Monda said no new permit application process or general season opportunities will be created. Instead, additional permits will be drawn from unsuccessful applications for the special hunt drawing last spring. The new permits will go to youth, seniors, hunters with disabilities, and applicants for antlerless hunts in Game Management Units 224, 239, and 242. New permit holders will be notified this month for hunts scheduled in October and November.
Reducing the number of deer this year and next will help the winter range recover and will speed the growth of bitterbrush and other shrubs that represent important food sources for mule deer. Too many deer will stunt recovering shrubs, Monda said.
Monda added that the Washington chapters of the Mule Deer Foundation are contributing funds for post-fire habitat restoration efforts.
"In the long run, fewer deer on the land and our re-vegetation work will help the range recover more quickly and will contribute to a more robust mule deer population," Monda said.

To be clear, this are not additional deer tags. They are permits. They are an extension of the number (and now the season) of permits that were available in the spring draw for certain categories such as Youth.
The permit allows a hunter with an unused tag to hunt during the designated time period, for the animals designated under the original hunts. It does not allow the harvest of an additional animal. Should the department decide to offer additional tags, that would be a separate action.
The individuals notified this week will need to purchase a "substitute permit" (aka "green card") for $.50. They would need to use a regular, unfilled deer tag to hunt.

I feel a little ripped. I drew the 2nd whitetail doe in Alta, so I HAVE to buy a second tag to help the mule deer. Everyone else just gets to, or has the option to buy a 2nd tag. Oh well. IS WHAT IT IS. Still going to = more meat in my freezer and one less whitey in the Methow.

So does anybody know of a farmer or others who want some whitails removed from there property in the Pearrygin unit?

My kid can shoot two doe tag plus second deer don't care what species you know where the whitetails are pm me otherwise where gonna let her feed the family.opinions vary on this and I respect all.I'd rather shoot whitetail they taste better.

I received the same email: if anyone is against the hunt for these animals, the best way to protest would be to purchase the tag then burn it/not hunt.

This is a bunch of crap! So I apply for a permit that puts me in a unit with 14 other hunters to hunt for a quality buck. Now there will be a bunch of people running around with us in there during this time frame?? Why the frig would they put it the same time as the quality hunt? I wonder if they'd like to give me my points back? These guys making decisions at wdfw are idiots. They couldn't care less about the people buying licenses in this state outside of their money.

My family will happily purchase and "eat" three of these permits, unless we spot a whitetail doe. It's not a laughing matter to us. I'd do the same if it were twice the price.
And it's not giving them money for free. I'm expressing my convictions. I'll be doing it in writing as well.

I don't follow the modern season too closely, but you're saying they have given out permits that weren't in the regs after the draw has taken place? Haven't heard of that. I'm irritated because I applied and drew a permit that had at most 15 in guys in one unit hunting deer with their bows. It might not make much of a difference and I really shouldn't be surprised by the decision the wdfw made. Just makes more sense to put the doe hunts after all the quality hunts have taken place. Doubt these new permit holders will even leave the road so probably won't affect my hunt much anyways.

if you don't agree with the permit hunt why purchase the second deer tag? you don't have to... and if you don't you get your points back :twocents:

To allow the hunters to hunt the Chiliwist late bow permit is completely ridiculous. If I had the tag, I'd say give my points back. WDFW shouldn't even give them the option, and also, any hunter who would want that tag after the mess up there is nuts. :twocents:

Change your camo. (buy winter and roll around in the dirt a bit) Should be perfect.

Better do it this year as opposed to next. The deer will migrate in this year. Next year they wont be there to migrate.
-
The next big surprise is gonna be that the doe permits are any weapon. I hope they at least make them use a bow during the 21-30 season. I'm skeptical though. Wdfw's track record isn't good...I'll cross my fingers.

They will have to use the weapon in compliance with the special permit they put in. So as I read the email the units that are participating in this hunt are modern, and muzzleloader. The second deer permits doesn't state what weapon choice they will be, most likely modern as well.

This is from the original post:
The new dates are Oct 11-31 and Nov. 21-30.
Isn't your quality hunt Nov 1-20?
Chilliwist Quality Archery Nov 21-30
it sucks for the quality hunt guys. limited unburnt area and 1000 other people potentially... instead of 14
I haven't seen a number of additional permits / tags that will be issued. Does anyone have a reference? Thank you.

It isn't gonna be 1000s, I bet most will want to get this done before NOV 21-30 so that don't have to mess with the weather IE snow in the passes and such. The email didn't give numbers of extra permits issued. But my guess is that all who drew this spring will have the opportunity for the second doe tag as well.

Ten youth, and five "Age 65 and Older permits" were issued for Pearrygin in the Spring. Only a portion of those permit holders will hunt. Some will not harvest a deer. Some won't purchase a second tag. The combined impact of those hunters won't be great. The question remains how many additional permits will be issued.
-
I thought it was 300. I assumed it would be the majority in Chiliwist since it will be the most impacted.
-
Ok 300 divided by 3 GMUs 100 each unit divided by two tags per person so about 50 people I would guess. :dunno:
-

That does sound high. Hopefully not that many.
"Matt Monda, WDFW regional wildlife manager, said the department will issue more special hunting permits to help reduce the number of deer to a level that the remaining winter range can support.
"We're being conservative in reducing the size of the herd because we are still assessing the amount of regrowth that is occurring, and we can't predict winter conditions," he said. "The additional deer harvest will be tightly controlled."
-
while on the phone yesterday with WDFW they said it was 200 extra permits, or 7% herd reduction goal.

I bow hunt bud.
Been the same for the modern "quality" guys for years as well, don't think you are the only one!
What difference does it make if you issue the whitetail permits in the regs or after the regs come out in your case?
Yes, modern guys on average wait 10+ years for one of the 10-15 late tags in these areas, only to show up and see non "quality" hunt tag holders all over the place looking for whitetails.
Why not issue the non quality tags for the week before, or perhaps the week after the highly touted "quality" hunt takes place?
This year guys that have also waited 10+ years for one of these tags will show up and the deer will be flying all over the place, having been pressured right up to the first day of their "quality" hunt, when in the past there has been a week or so for the deer to calm down. Now they will be under high pressure from Oct 12th through the end of November, non stop. :bash:

I was drawn too, Im torn on it. I definitely feel bad for the late buck hunt boys. I'm half tempted to buy the tag and throw it in with my any bull grande ronde for a great soup. If my 40 some bucks could be used to help feed some deer, I'm happy to do it. Then again, I wouldn't mind the meat either.

Was just chatting with a buddy about all these doe tags and was wondering what everyone's guess is as to how many muley doe will be shot with "whitetail" doe tags?

Yeah, Alta, Chili and Pearrygin

Well heck, Gardner had a fire too. Might as well shoot another 100 does there too. :yike: :bdid: I don't understand Alta. Theres still quite a bit of range. :dunno:

You are clearly not paying attention, the deer in those areas will not move once they get to their accustomed wintering areas, and ultimately starve to death wondering where all their food is. :chuckle:
-
Oh yeah, I forgot. :chuckle:

Instead of doe, they should have made them two point tags.......... When its all said and done, that's all that will be left standing.

I've been thinking the same thing. Last week I drove past a small patch of alfalfa just off Lower Beaver Creek Rd. that had 4 smooth brow 2pt.'s feeding in it. All clearly from the same gene pool... :bash:

I just got off the phone with WDFW (360-902-2515). The "antlerless whitetail only" special permits are actually good for either antlerless whitetail or mule deer. The WDFW said that this is clearly stated in the WAC that authorized the change. This was not communicated in the email sent out to the permit recipients.

I called to make sure too. You can shoot either mule deer or whitetail doe.

Sounds like they didn't learn their lesson after the Swakane debacle. Herd decimation is emanate. I would think one year of supplemental feeding would have been a way better option.

I suppose its not PC to be against this either. Some kid might not get to harvest his first deer, which I am all for them doing. I wish most understood how they were contributing to this debacle. I suppose many are just excited to draw something, and finally have a chance of killing something. Then if you stand up for something you believe in, you have some dude calling you an armchair biologist. How about tenured outdoorsman. Been there and back again...... It looks like this thing is going down and there is no shortage of folks wanting to contribute to the demolition of this herd. In the next five years when you are all asking me where I would go, I guess I can refer them to this thread.

I'm just curious what you guys all thought about 13 years ago when they had a general season for does for youth in pearagin? I know there was a lot of does taken. Do you think that impacted the herd at all?
-
Tyring to wrap my head around 13 years ago. 96 was the horrible winter right? I have never been very pro doe hunting except whitetail. I have never killed a doe myself. I was a kid once too. I Never judged anyone who legally took one, I was just personally against it. Its been awhile since the herd was at its max in the Methow. There has been a steady decline for sometime, so no I probably didn't support it then either. Back in the old days when folks took doe for the table, they were woodsy enough to take the old baron ones, and let the young ones perpetuate the herd.
You'll see a different mindset today....
"Blast the first thing you see, its owed to us, afterall how much have we paid the WDFW this year for a tag....."

What we saw 13 years ago were families showing up with 5,6,....12 kids. One camp had nine deer hanging, mostly does and spikes. Everyone new the "Dad" was killing all the animals.
We actually had two youths get their first deer that year. Both were ecstatic! Still to this day we describe a certain draw "were Nathan got his deer".
I was all for a "Youth" hunt. It never crossed my mind that "hunters" would bring that many kids and exploit the situation as bad as they did.
It was nothing but a meat shoot. Since then the numbers have not returned to anywhere near what they were before the hunt.
Sad part is that it would have probably been fine if it was not exploited by a bunch of selfish jerks.
I have never witness a slaughter like that before or since.

You,d think i would have learned,i must be real stupid or real brave(probably a little of both leaning alot towards the first :chuckle:)...............Heres my thaught,Its no secret i dont like doe shoots, especially at this time in the Methow. The herd has taken a beating from all diffferent directions over the last 20 or so years and is barely a scant shadow of what it once was, some here remember those times,MANY of you dont.As far as impacting the herd,of coarse i think it impacted it,hundreds of does were taken out that wouldnt be dropping fawns the following spring.Another thing that soured me even more on doe shoots took place that same year you are talking about,I would bet we seen at least 8 to 10 different incidents where grown ups were shooting the does and then having their kids drop the tag on them! Seen one guy shoot 2 does and a fawn with 3 shots at about 60 yards, then had the 3 kids that were with him tag them,I actually turned that fella in,My pardner and i were walking back to our rig when we witnessed it,we asked him why he didnt let the 3 boys shoot, his reply..."you guys didnt see anything" with a turd eatin grin on his face.We said have a good day and got his truck plates.Yes i think alot of things have helped decimate this herd over the years, killing hundreds of does while the herd is in a tailspin certainly is not going to help. :twocents: ........OK,let me have it,got my guard up!

:yeah: Have a mod sticky this thread now so it will stay at the top so everyday everyone who takes part is this slaughter can remember where all the deer went five or so years ago. Your very correct about how people think they are owed and will kill anything and everything if given the chance.
-
I agree with stickying the thread so 5 years from now we can remember why deer numbers are perhaps lower than today...otherwise it will all be blamed on wolves.
I am still not sure that these extra permits will result in additive mortality given the loss of winter range. :twocents:
-
Also it will be interesting to see or even if the WDFW is willing to publish how many does are actually taken with these permits.

Yearly round table meeting with the director and staff tonight here. Hopefully Fitkin will be there, but due to the circumstances with many local angry people over this decision, I'm sure he'll hide at home and monitor his wolves.

Both of you must be arm chair bio's, if the herd wasn't strong and in great shape then they certainly would not have increased the late permits in that area by 50%. Maybe you two better get your facts strait before suggesting that the herd has been in decline for the last 20 years...........sheesh!

Obviously that was a cynical statement made on your part, if not you don't have any past history with reguards to the herd. :bash:
-
I've been drawn for the herd reduction tags (Second deer and Over 65) in GMU 224 (Pearygin) and I will be using every skill I have to fill them if possible.
Some background on that statement:
I've been a hunter for 36 years and have lived in and hunted in Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and (for the past 30 years) Washington. In the early 1980's, I had the opportunity to work in and around the Florida Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands area near Naples, Florida. During the early summer months of 1982, there was a situation that developed in the Everglades wherein there was a tremendous amount of rainfall. What this did was to inundate the Everglades and cause a large rise in the water level. The Everglades - being basically flat - could not shed the water quickly enough and much of the land area (and food) became submerged except for the few high spots which remained above water.
What then began to happen was that the deer population was forced onto these high spots and quickly began to overgraze them. Florida Wildlife officials and many hunters saw this and a proposal for herd reduction hunts was put forth to prevent the suffering and death of many deer from starvation. Almost as day follows night, the howling began from the "environmental" side and opposition quickly formed with the predictable result that the hunts were either less than effective or not allowed at all.
In one of the proposed hunts, fewer deer than anticipated (and needed) were taken because the adverse publicity kept many hunters at home while a second hunt was never allowed.
As a sidebar, the environmental crowd and others came forward with an idea (I'm being generous here as "ideas" usually require logic and thought) that was adopted and actually tried. In the place of herd reduction hunts, a large scale "deer capture" and removal to other areas would be conducted to prevent the predicted die off. It failed miserably. It was a "cluster****" from the moment it began and went downhill from there. Very few deer (I believe the number was 19 - including one fawn) were actually captured and most of them later died.
This is just a quick encapsulation of that event. If you'd like to read a more complete description that's available in a report that was filed, you can Google the "Everglades Emergency Deer Hunt Controversy" that was written in 1983 by the State of Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission.
Do I like the idea of having to reduce a herd's numbers? No, the sportsman in me is discomfited by the thought. That said, having witnessed a die-off first hand (and having seen the foolishness proposed and adopted that resulted in a die off that didn't need to happen), the realist in me knows that, sometimes, there are distasteful things that need to be done to prevent an even worse situation from occurring.

I see this going down as an up river massacre... :yike: it will be like what happened in my unit ...people will be dropping doe from the roads as the passer byers are watching ..then there will be no more deer hunting ...mark my words ;)
You may be right BOWHUNTER45,and whats even more unfortunate is that some folks call that "hunting" :bash:
So your saying if you were driving down the road and seen a legal deer during deer season you would not get out and shoot it ?? How many deer you think are shot from the roads in Washington ..? Both sides of the hills !! I think way more than you think !
Dont you have to be 100 ft off the road to shoot :dunno:...And that was my point.

only if 'they' maintain it as part of the road for 100 feet. Otherwise, just step off the maintained portion and shoot.
