Title: Vorttex 15's??
Post by: jackelope on October 03, 2014, 09:09:29 AM

On a bit of a budget and trying to decide on some Vortex 15xbino's. I'm looking at either the Vulture HD 15x56's or the Viper HD 15x50's. Wondering if anyone has any input or experience one way or the other.

Thanks in advance.

I'd always go with the 56 (min) on the 15x.

I read lot's of good stuff about the Vortex 15x's  from the Coues hunters.   I think that you would be happy with them!

Just don't look through the new Swaro 15x56 HDs   :chuckle:

My buddy has a pair of newer Swaro 15's.  Not sure if they're the ones you're talking about but they're amazing.
That's what has talked me into picking these up, but the Swaro's are way out of my financial bubble.
Thanks.

I'm in Snoqualmie, and have a set of the 15x50 viper HDs. I am very happy with them (they are not for sale, haha). You are welcome to swing by my place and have a look at them if you would like. You will definitely need to purchase the vortex tripod adapter with either set.

Jackelope, what did you end up getting? I am looking at buying the Talon HD 10x42's but am gathering all info as possible. I use a spotter while hunting, would the 15x's be too much FOV?

I haven't ordered yet. I had a set of the 15x50 Viper Hd's over the weekend and they're great. I might save a few more pennies and buy those. I was going to get the Vultures but I think I might go ahead and pull the trigger on the Viper's. I was seconds from ordering the Vultures last week then my buddy offered to let me try out the Vipers. They're awesome for the $$. I also handled a set of those 10x42 Talons. They're really nice too.

Right on, I really like sitting behind my spotter and worry that a 15x will leave  me torn between glassing through them or my spotter,  staring at the back wall of Sportsmans Warehouse doesn't quite give a true example. I think the 10 x 42's are the ones for me. thanks

I wouldn't want the 15's as my only binoculars. And it was a lot nicer glassing through those big bino's than the spotter, but there's still no hanging with the spotter at 40x or 50x or whatever when you need it. I could see myself carrying my 10's and 15's and no spotter though if I was trying to go more compact or lighter weight.

I have a set of 15x56 Vortex Kaibab HD.  They are great optically wise BUT they are big and IMO you don't truly get to use their benefit/s until you have them on some type of mount.  Whether that be a tripod, window mount or whatever.  These things have a lot of power and any movement seems to really get magnified but put them on a tripod and you can sit and glass with them alllllllllllll day long without getting eye fatigue like you will with a spotter.  Like someone already mentioned, I wouldn't want these as my only pair of binos but since I've had my Kaibab's, I use my spotting scope wayyyyyyyy less.

I wouldn't want to carry 15x binos around my neck for very long. They also have a narrow field of view. A quality 60 mm or 65mm spotting scope will weigh the same or less with much better magnification.

I have a pair of high quality 16 x 70s that I never use.

I wouldn't put them around my neck either.

I absolutely love my tripod mounted 15s. My 15x50 Vipers are listed at 28 oz, and my 10x42 gold rings are 34 oz. If I am packing a tripod/spotter than I will be carrying the Vipers, every time. If I'm on a hike where I'm only taking a set of binos, it will be the Leupolds.

A few days ago I spotted these two does at some unknown crazy long distance while scanning with the 15s. I don't think I would have seen them at all with the hand held 10s. Terrible pic, but this is at 33 power.

I am convinced that this method works best for me.

Dan

I have and love my 15x50 Viper HD's, they sure came in handy for putting the third points on a couple mulies this year.  My hunting partner fell in love and just received his new pair.   I bought a doubler for them and they work great for longer range.  The weight has never been an issue.
