Alright... so I'll try to do this amazing hunt justice and share a few photos of my adventure... I am still in shock, so my writing may be slightly less eloquent than usual.

Bring it...

So as many of you may know, I make a living as a wildland firefighter out of Central Oregon for the summers, but was raised in Central Washington. My father has been putting in for a moose tag for me before I even truly probably understood what a moose was... and after roughly 20 years of applications, I received the coveted "selected" status for the East Okanogan/Kettle Any Moose tag. This is an area I have some knowledge of, because for the few years I spent out of fire, I worked as a research forester for the Pacific Northwest Research Station and spent many a night in the Prospector Inn in Republic. I had seen a few moose over the course of my time there, and although it wasn't a tag any of my mentors had experience with, I was excited.
-
patiently waiting, you always share great stories.

:hunter: Go getum!
-
Fire season started off slowly; we normally head to New Mexico and Arizona in May and don't return until the monsoons push us north back into Utah, Idaho, and Oregon... but this season was unseasonably wet and we waited, poised and ready, in Oregon. Once fire season arrived, the work was steady. I was unable to break away from my helicopter rappel crew to do any scouting; I was gone the entire month of August and 14 days in September. Moose hunting, and the opener, were coming on quickly.
-
Fire season ended abruptly for me, with a September 30th performance evaluation, exit interview on the season, and a 6.5 hour drive to Chelan with all my belongings packed tightly into my Subaru Forester. I drove into my home town at midnight with heavy eyelids. Sleeping didn't come easy, even though I was tired. I unpacked my vehicle the next morning and threw in the essentials for moose... my "kill" bag, map, muzzleloader, .270 (and accompanying ammunition), sleeping bag, clothing, water, coffee, homemade fruit rolls (thanks mom!), locally grown apples, and chocolate milk. All a girl needs, really. :chuckle:

Tagging along. This should be good!

So at this point I was moose-bound, with the main notion of scouting some of the areas I had inventoried in 2011. My parents and I also drew the Clockum muzzleloader antlerless tag that started today, so they were counting on me taping my trigger finger to my palm and just "window shopping". I called one of the members on this site that had contacted me about some local knowledge, and he was out muzzleloader hunting so his wife kindly invited me to call back in the evening to chat with him. I made it to the unit and the area I had wanted to revisit, trying to clear the fog from my memory and recall which road system and particular area I had seen moose those three years prior... I drove around reacquainting myself with the area until dusk, making friends with two deer hunters from the Tri-Cities and Anacortes, and readily listening to their suggestions for "moosey" areas in the vicinity before heading back to town and cell coverage to call the Hunt-Wa member previously discussed. He asked where I was concentrating, and I told him. With enthusiasm and local knowledge, he pointed me to a road system roughly 2 miles from my nightly scounting endeavors. I thanked him heartily, and sandwich in hand, headed back out to the area and slept in my car under the half moon and brisk skies, dreaming of tomorrow's possibilities.

My alarm quietly hummed Alison Krauss's "The Lucky One" just before daybreak, but it wasn't needed... I was up and ready. As daylight broke I was giddy to find the road I was traveling to be familiar... this is where I had worked and seen those moose in previous years... the small silver tag nailed to the bottom of the tree alongside the road known as the "reference tree" at the Research Station confirmed it. I pulled into a narrow road I had never traveled before, grimacing as the brush announced my presence as it whined down the side of my vehicle. I stopped and decided to take my muzzleloader and camera for a walk, and no sooner than I had made the decision was I rewarded with the view I had wanted the most; those dark, tall bodies working the far edge of a small swamp.
-
As I got closer and worked myself into a small opening in the brush, my heart pounded at my chest wall; those paddles! The color! A bull!
He was beautiful, and broadside at less than 70 yards trying to push a calf off of a cow. It was decision time: was this my moose, or not?

Congrats on the "selected" hirshey . Now go get em! Kinda sounding like you did!

I knew he was big... I knew he was a very respectable bull for Washington, but something inside of me said "shoot it with your camera, not your gun..." and I had to obey. I shouldered my Thompson Center Black Diamond and uncapped my camera, and proceeded to take photos of this magnificent critter for over 30 minutes as a raked the brush, grunted, and played King of the swamp. A smaller bull (I presume) stayed in the willows on the periphery wondering how he could get at that cow. Finally, the clicking of the camera caught the attention of the small calf, and all three animals walked back into the depths of the swamp and out of sight as the bull pleaded, grunting into the crisp morning air.

Great. Anything I thought I might be getting done this afternoon just got shot to hell. Gonna pour me a nice single malt and settle in for story time.
Keep it coming Hirshey
-
At this point, as my local Hunt-WA member says, my trigger finger was aching... did I do the right thing? Should I have taken this beautiful animal? Did I really just find such a masher on my first morning out? I was in disbelief. If I had had someone I cared about there to share that moment with me, I think the outcome would have been different. I would have taken aim at him with my sights rather than my lens... but 20 years of putting in for 20 minutes of morning air? I just couldn't do it. Realizing I might be the biggest fool ever and having shot nerves, I wandered back into cell service to share the excitement and a few photos to see just how stupid I really was. The decision was pretty much unanimous: WHAT HAD I BEEN THINKING??
My parents were still busily packing for elk camp, and I couldn't bring myself to say the words: I need you!
Luckily, another lifeline presented itself... after sending the photos to my friend Jeff from Seattle, there was an immediate response... "How is a guy supposed to work with that excitement? Say the word and I'm there!" We chatted briefly on the phone before it was decided: he was going to take the rest of the week off work and make the 7 hour drive to come enjoy this experience with me.

I spent the remainder of the day half-heartedly exploring new roads and country, but my mind was still in the back side of that swamp with those animals. I snuck in later in the day; I just couldn't stay away. I was giddy to hear a few grunts and the raking of paddles as my king of the swamp lorded over his land. I left and met up with Jeff, excitedly sharing stories of the day and catching up after 6 months of busy field seasons for us both: he in the marine world and me in fire. Who knew fire and water could get along so swimmingly? :chuckle:
We headed back up into the woods to my previous night's camp and slept (I use the term loosely for me!) another night in the back of my car, just waiting for the daylight to break.
We were up and at it at the perfect time; the car was defrosted on this nippy 30 degree morning and all that was left to do was hop in when the unmistakable hum of a diesel engine broke through the morning air, and a silver truck came over the horizon. Unable to possibly get in front of him, I stepped out and flagged the gentleman down. "If I might be so rude to ask, what are you hunting?" I pried. "I'm not going to lie, I'm road hunting for mule deer" was the response. Feeling a small sense of relief, I asked him, "Great! I'm hunting moose and there's one down the next left I'd like to get after.. may I please have that road?" He smiled and kindly responded it was all mine. Sweet relief!
We got to the 2-track road and prepared for an exciting morning. Slowly sneaking around the corner, my heart leaps when I hear a giant "SNAP", but immediately falls when I hear the muffled sound of a truck, and see the headlights crest the ridge... the gentleman was unfamiliar with the area and didn't know it was a loop road.. he had driven 3/4 of my swamp already! I stepped aside to let him by, but he was already terribly embarrassed and reversed out the entire mile-long loop. I looked at Jeff as we sat and listened to the roar of the engine as it slowly faded into the distance.
What now?
-
This is the moose tag I always put in as my top choice.
-
Tag..... Very Jealous!! Can't wait to see / read the ending to this story.
-
Well, I whispered to Jeff that we should wait for the woods to settle. We sat at a spot with a good view of the swamp and just listened. I'd never wanted to hear racket in the bushes so badly, but none was afforded to me. A single branch snapped on the cutbank above us, and one set of moose tracks from the evening headed that direction, but I had convinced myself it was either the smaller bull or the calf... there is no way that bull was leaving that cow.
After 30 minutes of silence, we walked the road until the swamp returned to a stream-like state. No tracks, no noise, no love. I decided we should go back to the set of tracks headed up the hill and follow them; we tracked them to a large bench full of seedlings and saplings, and lost them in the brushy ground. I was at a loss. I looked at Jeff, my patient and supportive hunting partner and whispered, "I think I want to try calling. Let's head up the hill and set up where we can see all of this". I could tell he thought I was kind of nuts, but he played along. We worked our way up the hill and sat with our backs against the large remnants of a logged stump.
Now, I should mention I had pretty much been listening to this YouTube "essential, must-know moose calls" from this gentleman out of Ontario non-stop the last two days. The previous night, Jeff and I had practiced up a storm on our way back out of civilization, laughing and bellowing our way back into the woods. I had adjusted my tone a few octaves higher, and was sounding pretty decent.
So there we were, sitting in the woods feeling like that moose could be 5 feet or 5 miles away and we probably wouldn't have the luck to see him again, when I started my lovesick cow moose calls. No sooner had I ended the two bellows and grunt did we hear the UNMISTAKABLE sound of an excited bull. He was down in the swamp, raking his paddles on anything near him, and splashing our direction. I told Jeff we should get to a spot where we can see the swamp, because I wasn't sure I could talk him out of it, over a road, and uphill. We started to move, and made it about 30 feet when it was obvious we weren't going to make it... he was on his way in, and hot! We sat; me with my back to a 12 inch diameter douglas fir, and Jeff crouched behind it. Moments after we sat down, I gave one more bellow, and tines became visible, swaying above the small saplings. The bull stopped, and for aching seconds stared our direction before starting to orbit us downslope. There was one good opening in the small trees, and I set up over my knees, looking down my muzzleloader waiting for him to arrive. He did, right on cue, and I squeezed, but met resistance... I had been so excited I forgot to take my safety off!
-
Great story keep it coming!!
-
I adjusted accordingly but the bull had made it through the clearing and back into the seed-sapling scattered earth. He kept working his way through the small trees searching for the cow that didn't exist. One more opening is all I had to get it done. I set up again looking down my Thompson Center and waited. My king of the woods clambered into the opening and I grunted my best grunt... he stopped, looking our direction, broadside roughly 40 yards. I squeezed off a shot and was rewarded with a thick cloud of smoke. I stood up and started my moose bellows; as the smoke cleared, I saw him standing there roughly 70 yards away. Steam shot out of his side as he sounded like a locomotive train with every breath. I had made a good shot, compromising both lungs. He wobbled, and changed directions. Fearing he was going to try to make it to his swampy castle, I put another shot in him and he laid down, drifting into silence and stillness.
I cursed: "HOLY SH**! That's my moose!"
I walked down to this beautiful animal, grateful for everything that happened the last few days. I couldn't have asked for anything better; the excitement, the company, the beautiful animal, taking it with my muzzleloader, and having the privilege of watching it just BE the day prior. I shall forever cherish yesterday. To be one of the lucky 10... was astonishing. To have lived the last few days... was priceless.

A great write up as usual...congrats on a great bull.

Once I had the moose down, my parents quickly came to share in the enjoyment... they missed the fun stuff and got in on all of the hard work!
Thank you Jeff... Thank you mom and dad... Thank you Hunt-WA members for all your support! This hunt was incredibly special.
-
Cool story. Awesome Oil!
-
THANK you!
And with that, I caped him out to the base of the skull. He's in a walk-in cooler (both the cape and the remainder of the hide)
Anyone know a taxidermist interested in a moose cape? Anyone know someone wanting to tan some leather? I'm going to get him European mounted so the cape and hide are ready to head to the right person.
-
Awesome bull & a great story, Congrats on making great use of a great tag.

Fantastic bull, pics and story!
Thanks for sharing
-
Congrats, that is awsome!!!! How wide was he???
-
wow, unreal :) :) :)

He didn't fit width-wise in a Toyota Tacoma which has a 4 foot wide bed.. So he's high to mid 40's I think. :dunno: haven't put a tape to him yet
-
I sure like the way you played that out ...that's awesome .. You need to take up on becoming a female outdoor writer ...That's a huge Bull ...RIGHT ON   :yike:

And thank you all for the kind words and taking the time to read about my adventures... your support makes it exciting to share! :)

Great job/animal/story! I joke that it's not quite fall until the annual Hirshey and Boneaddict stories are out. :chuckle:
-
Great story and nice bull!
-
Congratulations! Beautiful bull.
-
Fire season started off slowly; we normally head to New Mexico and Arizona in May ...
Did you work the fire in the White Mountains this year?
-
Each fall we look forward to elk bugles, frosty deer breath in the morning sun, grouse in the fry pan and Hirshey's photo filled stories. The ride you take us on never fails to deliver excitement and a little bit of jealousy. Thank you and congratulations...he's beautiful!
-
Well done young lady! You never cease to amaze with your adventures. Please keep sharing.
-
Thank you again! :) So excited!
Also, the cape is still available... it was too big and had too much red in the face to be an appropriate replacement for the other taxidermist that was interested.
-
Your amazing!!!
Whats your plans for us for the rest of the fall?
-
Great story and congratulation on that fine bull!!

That's a great bull, nice work!

Nope.. I didn't leave Oregon all summer, with the exception of 7 days in Susanville, California. We were busy on the home-front. I was going nuts not being in the Methow. :-/

Whats your plans for us for the rest of the fall?
Next? Clockum muzzleloader antlerless elk tag, General season Washington deer in Okanogan/Chelan counties, perhaps heading to Oregon to share in the adventure of a gal pal's first elk hunt, then my Idaho mule deer adventurings again. :)
-
You are an old soul Hirshey. Not too many of them out there. Keep it up.

Simply amazing! I look forward to your hunts every year and you never fail to deliver a great hunt, a great story, and amazing photos. Thanks again for sharing your hunts with us!!
-
Fire season started off slowly; we normally head to New Mexico and Arizona in May ...
Did you work the fire in the White Mountains this year?
Nope.. I didn't leave Oregon all summer, with the exception of 7 days in Susanville, California. We were busy on the home-front. I was going nuts not being in the Methow. :-/
Well I thank you none the less. Heck of a crew out there just like the guys in 2011 for the Wallow Fire. This years fire was mostly on the WMAT Rez and likely pushed a ton of elk into the United States including a nice 6x7 whom like your moose was kindly spared a death in obscurity and will now be admired and respected on the wall for untold generations. :IBCOOL:

Congrats on the moose. Great write up.

Nice job on a Great Bull.

Well deserved, great job

Thank you again, all! A local taxidermist came to look at the cape this morning and took it off my hands.. It was nice.. I went inside to get my special permit and came back out and he was telling the younger guy that normally people don't take that good care of capes and this was the exception not the rule. :IBCOOL: yay for taking good care of such an awesome animal!
Took a quick effort to put a tape to him.. Only tried for about 30 seconds but his 3rd from the last points are 48 inches wide. (As measured at my taxidermist's) He may be wider elsewhere but I am thrilled!
-
As usual great job! My 14 year old daughter really looks up to you and you hunting determination!
That is such an immensely gratifying compliment.. Thank you so much. :)

Congrats on a great bull  As always an awesome story to go with it.

Cape sold to Hoots taxidermy in pateros, head up near havillah at skull mtn taxidermy, time to join my parents at elk camp! :hello: see you soon, Hunt-Wa!
-
very cool story and bull! I hope I can draw atleast one oil tag before I get to old to make the most of them.
-
Congrats! Jeff and I wondered if you got the big boy. We went looking for you on Friday afternoon and ran across another hunter who said you got him at around 0800. He gave us rough directions on where you were parked, but we didn't find your rig. We figured you must've got him packed out and heaed for home. So stoked you got him...........he's an absolute stud!
I have to say it was a pleasure meeting you. Both Jeff and I are VERY impressed that you took on the task of going after a moose on your own. It was obvious that you're a very accomplished hunter who holds the utmost of respect for the game you hunt.
On a side note, Jeff got his deer on Friday evening. A respectable 3 point whitetail............his first with a muzzleloader also.
Hope to cross paths in the woods again one day.
Matt

-
Great bull and very well written. Congratulations!
-
Congrats Hirshey! Beautiful bull. More than once I've left my safety on, on accident, taking a shot at big game. Sometimes its a blessing as I feel the "jerky" trigger pull. It makes me reset and calm my mind to make a smooth squeeze and a good shot. Great story, good luck the rest of your season!
-
Awesome job, great writeup, and nice animal. It is heartening to see someone appreciate one of these oil tags and work hard to get it done like you do.

Matt! Glad you both tagged out... thanks again for sharing in some of the excitement with me! I had my radio on your guys' channel just in case I heard you nearby, but figured I should let you get your hunt on for Jeff! You two were very friendly and a pleasure to meet.. that's one of the fabulous things about this community.. you get to meet some amazing people you'd otherwise never knew existed. :) Thank you again for taking the time to chat with me those two days!
-
Congrats on the great story, very awesome bull, sweet memories even more cool shooting it with the muzzy! :)
:yeah:Once again you give us a great story, your success and drive is seen in few. Congrats on another incredible journey, and thanks for sharing your story.
-
Thanks again all.. So I got permission from the hunt-wa member that gave me some advice and offered to come help drag and offered his help to a complete stranger to reveal who he is.. I recommend to anyone drawing this tag to contact goldminer.. Super friendly, helpful gent! Thanks John!
Also, my taxidermist says that's the largest moose he's had in his shop.. He is going to get it measured for me.. Thinks it might be up there for a muzzleloader record. Kinda cool I suppose! :)
-
 Great job!!
-
When Jeff showed me those photo's of your moose at work I told him that you needed to kill THAT MOOSE. I;m glad you did and I bet he makes BC.
Nice going

My mom knocked down a cow elk with her clockum muzzleloader antlerless tag last night while I was toying with bugling bulls.. It was over 70 degrees at 7pm so we made the call to get her skinned and in a walk-in cooler. Waiting for my father to be ready to head back for another afternoon hunt!

Great bull! I love the way you take us along with you on the hunt
-
Sorry for the late post but I don't come here often. Congrats on a nice bull and thanx for sharing the story. Nice pics.
-
Great write up on a great adventure. Your attention to detail during the writing process allows others to visualize the habitat, the animal approaching and the harvest. Kudos on that. Congrats again, he's a dandy.
-
Haven't had time to read the story, do we know how wide her bull is? stud moose.
After the 60 day drying (and European job) period, I'd guess it'll be just shy of 48. It was 48 from the 4th (or 3rd?) points from the back the day Hoots Taxidermy took off the cape.. I don't know if you have to measure from the points or not, but I think it is wider somewhere else, because it wouldn't fit in a 4' truck bed width-wise... we had to put it carefully on the tailgate (Jeff's truck was loaded with other items that prevented sticking it in the other direction and had a canopy on) and drive it the .5 miles to my car, secured with rope. :)
-
I think the proper way to measure would be to put the side of the rack up against the wall then measure straight out to the furthest point keeping everything square as possible. Love to see it when he is all finnished.

Congrats again on the moose, How's the elk hunt going? Do you need to buy another freezer yet? :)
Thank you, sir! My mom knocked down a cow with a great shot... it didn't even go five steps and took the pressure off my father and me. :) We saw FAR more bulls than cows... if I had a branch antler bull tag I'd have been tagged out thirty times over... I could have shot a yearling bull that came into my call the very first morning I hunted, but decided to just take photos instead. My dad had a 6x7 he says is in the top five he's seen in the state at 20 feet for half an hour... almost all his limbs were asleep by the time the darn thing left! It ran downslope after I called it in to the other side of a small sapling from me and eventually busted me. I called in five... FIVE bulls to one set... three to another, and two to under 10 feet... they would have stepped over me looking for the non-existent cow if I hadn't giggled. Hoping they were dragging a cow with them, but no luck. My last night I had my first miss with a muzzleloader... at about 80 yards, I cut hair off the back of a nice cow (my mom had binos on her and hair flew!) but did not draw blood and she ran off uninjured. Kinda rattled me a little to be honest. Two inches lower and I'd have broken her back, but since I was 9 and lost track of a beautiful buck, I haven't lost another animal and the thought terrifies me. I'm glad it was a miss rather than an injury. I got lots of awesome photos, though, and we had never experienced hunting during that much rut activity... I could get bulls to bugle at 8 AM, noon, 3PM, or dusk... they were actively seeking love. :) I was too distracted by all the bulls to really feel pressure to have to fill my tag.. I was just enjoying the experience to be honest.
I truly look forward to reading your hard-earned success story here soon.. congrats on a beautiful bear, though!

Some more photos on the hoof.. haven't edited them all yet.

Also, glad to see you here.. I think we've missed each other lately :)
And thank you all for the kind words.. Maybe someday I WILL get picked up to do some guiding :).

awesome read awesome bull
-
Thank you, all! I've had a great hunting season so far... didn't fill my antlerless elk tag, but was there to share the excitement with my mother filling her tag, and called in and saw over 30 bulls. It was a lot of fun!
Jeff and I boated up lake Chelan and then hiked into the hills to meet the fog and rain... :chuckle: We had maybe 20 foot visibility on average the entire trip and stayed in a soggy state for 5 days before calling it, but we still had a great time!
Now, on to Idaho! I can only hope I get lucky enough to experience some more truly wondrous adventures and see some beautiful scenery. See you all in a few weeks!
-
Great story, awesome pictures! You need to blow up and frame the one with your bull in the swamp area, that is an amazing picture. I just spent last weekend hunting for moose with my 14 year old niece and brother in the Mt. Spokane South Area. She drew the youth cow hunt for that area and it was a blast hunting up there with the young lady. She made a great steep uphill 80 yard shot on a calf with her dad Sunday after passing on a cow Saturday that she rightfully thought was covered by too much brush at 100 yards. I am going to show her your write up and pictures, I think she will be impressed by you, your experience and pictures. Thanks for sharing.
-
Great bull Kari! I knew it was going to be a great one!

General Deer season... getting away from the crowds. We boated up then hiked 6.5 miles into the wilderness.

Idaho buck down pics?

Four hunters and four bucks down... had an old hunting partner break our deal not to take folks in there/not go without me (seeing as it was my hunt I introduced to them) and they ended up putting their spike camp less than 0.2 miles from our spike... and hunting the same drainage I was hunting, so I don't want to publicly post photos this season and encourage their continued follies in my little piece of heaven. Pretty sad, actually... because I look forward to sharing my stories and photos every year. They are on the forum, though, so I have to refrain. :(
The short of it is we harvested bucks on day 1, 3 (mine), 5, and had one guy harvest a last day buck after passing up on lots of great animals. Got wolves to howl back with just my voice howl from across drainage in a snow storm, and they howled two nights of the trip (killed a critter on a ridgeline right above our camp, and devoured one of our boned out carcasses in a single night). No elk seen, but lots of sheds picked up and glassed. Had 70 degree weather degrade to -8 over the 10 day trip. Lots of fun... wish I could share photos. :sry:
-
Sorry to hear that Hirshey,,, sad really... Hope you can find a way to not let it "change" (for lack of better words) the way you do things ... So many of us love to hear your stories and appreciate all you contribute ... It would be a shame to lose you being you ... I Think you are in a class of your own and should not change for anything ...
-
Well that sucks Hershey. No photos without any backgrounds behind you? I always liked seeing the pics from this hunt each year but completely understand. Congrats on another great year!
-
Four hunters and four bucks down... had an old hunting partner break our deal not to take folks in there/not go without me
First let me say congrats, and second - I am sorry to hear about this situation, Hirshey. Have had something similar happen to me as well on a piece of private land I had permission to hunt. One of the worst breaches of trust there is for the hunting community and it only gets worse as his friends bring in their friends, etc. :bdid:
-
It is not so much the backgrounds as it is the two hunt-wa members that I don't want to see our success photos at all. He decided he couldn't be my friend because I'm a female, and he doesn't want his significant other hanging out with the opposite sex, but can go hunting right where I will be every fall.. :dunno: pretty disappointing. Definitely a huge breach in hunting ethics, at least how I was raised.
-
Hirshey can I be your friend?? I won't trample all over your hunting grounds.. :chuckle:
-
Hirshey can I be your friend?? I won't trample all over your hunting grounds.. :chuckle:
You know I'm a girl, right? :chuckle: That's not going to change any time soon..
-
Did the inconsiderate person that camped next to you get any deer? I hope not.
This sucks that people have too act this way when they are supposed to be adults.
There are tons of people on this forum who would have loved to have been able too hunt an area like that with a class act huntress like yourself. I guess you can't just fix stupid. :bash:
-
Way to go!!!!!!!!! justice done on a great tag!!

I have no problem with you being a girl and I appreciate your desire for the sport. It's good for a change to see a few more women out there. Great season for you by the way and good luck in the future.

Great time for another topic. No sense turning a great OIL thread downhill. :twocents:
-
That's pretty unfortunate to hear. I'm sure your ten times the hunter that most guys are and could teach most of us a thing or two about the woods . all that still doesn't take away from your fantastic moose thanks again for documenting your hunt and sharing it . As I've mentioned be fore you have a great skill in story telling told by a guy that can butcher up a experience on paper .
-
Great time for another topic. No sense turning a great OIL thread downhill. :twocents:
Not even worth another topic... just thought I would address the question about my Idaho hunt and lack of photos/story since it was asked.
Back on to my moose... got my fella back from Skull Mountain on my way back from Idaho... I think he grew while I was gone! :chuckle:

Ken at Skull Mountain pulled out something disgusting from my skull... he had a 1.5 inch long larvae living in his sinuses... looked it up and it appears to be a sheep bot larvae.. usually they live in their larval form in domestic and bighorn sheep... couldn't find any literature on them using moose as hosts. HOW DISGUSTING! :o I can't imagine having a critter living in my nasal cavity.
-
Hirshey did you ever score it?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
-
Larvae sounds nasty. Your skull turned out very nice and will look cool on the wall.
-
Not yet.. I harvested it on October 3rd so the official measurement would have to be after December 3rd anyways... if I decide to submit him for the muzzleloader record, to the best of my knowledge he'll take it... :dunno:
-

As soon as I have a wall to hang it on... :chuckle: Dang this nomadic lifestyle!
-
Starbailey's got you from last year I think. But that is a great bull

-
That turned out really good ! the back drop in the yard with the deer fence ads to it . I gotta say I like the euro look on a moose good choice there.
-

Gotcha.. I have the record book from a few years ago so he isn't in that one. :) before drying I think I had him beat on width (49) but he definitely has more points so I bet you're right. I thought he took his archery for some reason. :)
-
In any case.. Whatever he scores he's a trophy to me. :) especially coming from the unit I drew AND having taken his photo the day prior and then calling him in.. I'll treasure him for a lifetime.
-
That euro turned out great! :tup:Shame to hear about your idaho hunt... ive been there a time or two. :'(
Always enjoy reading about your hunts!
-
hirshey, I believe there is no doubt that will break the muzzy record. Congrats to you!!. Thank you for taking me with you on this hunt even if it is just by reading your story. Great job all around!!
-
Thanks Bullblaster and BREW. I had a ton of fun with that hunt, and solidified a lifetime friendship. I couldn't be more fortunate.
-
I'm with Coach, moose euros are awesome! That's an amazing trophy regardless of record book placement. Glad to hear your backcountry hunt for bucks was a success. Congratz.
-
Hershey, I'm impressed! You did great!! Congratulations, I've known Your Dad since his Oroville days:-) if you get to Brewster let's share some stories... Pm me whenever...got a few mounts around here.....
-
Ken and Lisa do amazing work have been recommending them for years they are great people to share a camp with as they make some tasty meals
-
WOW! I enjoyed reading your story. Congratulations on a great Bull!

They are incredible people and produce excellent work... they have my Idaho mule deer right now, too.

Hey hirshey! How does your moose taste? My idaho bull is the best tasting and most tender game animal i have ever eaten! Hope yours is good too!
-
Hey hirshey! How does your moose taste? My idaho bull is the best tasting and most tender game animal i have ever eaten! Hope yours is good too!
The taste is incredibly mild.. Pretty much picks up whatever seasoning you put on it... Thompson Meats up in Twisp helped me cut it up; it was so tender we opted for more steaks than grind. I've enjoyed every cut so far, and it has been wonderfully tender. :) the mustard-encrusted loin slabs were a dream!
-
Just catching up on hunt-wa stories! Amazing story! Let me know when you become a guide, I'd love to be your first client! You obviously know how to get it done! Congrats again. Moose is my favorite table fair so far. Although a moose is a lot to eat for one person, but I got it done
-
glad you are enjoying it. The absolute best steak I've ever eaten was moose. only had one :'( now you on the other hand will enjoy for some time.
-
Hirshey,
First of all, very nice bull and I too am a huge fan of euro mounts, especially on a moose since they have such a long skull.
After admiring your moose, I was just re-reading the Oct-Nov 2012 Eastmans Journal and recognized you with a very nice buck as well. You are quite the hunter, congratulations.
-
Thank you all....
I am a much better deer hunter than I am moose.. seeing as it IS a OIL tag and all. :chuckle: I was a little younger when my father drew his and didn't get to participate.. definitely have the bug now, though! I'd tag along for sure if someone wants/needs help next season! ...IF I'm not either guiding or transitioning into a career out of wildland fire.
I am trying to track down an official scorer since the 60 day drying period is past now, and will look at potentially entering him in the books.
I was going to put the moose euro in with my other boys, but he makes them look pitiful! Happy new years from the boys in my life that are always around. :chuckle: Minus my Idaho bucks from the previous two seasons.

Thanks Buckblaster.. that was a buck and memories I'll treasure for a lifetime. Neat to have it captured in Eastman's. And I've been using my Lowa boots I won from that hunt the last two or three years and they're still going strong... same boots I wore moose hunting AND in Idaho.
-
I'm sure those are from hard work but your one lucky gal to have so many nice boys :chuckle:
-
So I got Oberon (got him in Ferry county and Oberon was king of the fairies.. And now Ferry county) measured B&C officially today.. Any guesses? Thank you Joe! It was a pleasure meeting you!!

Thank you! I couldn't be more thrilled.. :)

You find that perfect guy yet??? Great moose by the way!

You find that perfect guy yet??? Great moose by the way!
Not quite; I've been too busy moving around. Moved to my rappel base in Oregon only to accept a temporary (120 day) promotional detail to Naches... so I'm back up in Washington for the summer after many moves!
And thank you on the moose; I'm thrilled. I only have one loin slab left... gotta save it for an extra special occasion!
-
Congarts on your moose making BC. Hows the new job going? I drew CO deer so no reg WA deer for me. I may need your help when I draw my moose tag this season. Might have to invite Jeff along to help pack. Getting old sucks.

Bob!! Congrats on the draw! I can't wait to hear what shenanigans you get into! :)
The new job is great; wonderful coworkers and bosses.
As neat as Jeff is, why don't you let me call it close enough to a road I can block and tackle it out for you? ;) mine was kind enough to walk 40 yards towards that small road to make my 250' rope barely reach. That's the ultimate old man fix :chuckle:

Hirshey,
No I need to kill one in some Hell Hole so I'll have something to remember when I can't hunt any more.
going to Winthrop to fish and camp. Will hit black pine for some cutthroat action. Have a great weekend and save me a moose steak and I'll save you a sheep steak.

Very cool picture - Impressive!!

Did some environmentalist leave you a refrigerator up there for moose storage or did it take a Rotomold cooler full of beer to get that thing to the road?
-
You left the gut pile in the middle of the road, right? :peep:

Ha! Well.. It was a cooler full of ice for the organs and meat.. We used the lid as a sled to keep his cape nice, though. :hello:
-
Great idea!
-
You left the gut pile in the middle of the road, right? :peep:
:chuckle: no.. There is actually a very humorous time lapse of the whole event that captures me disappearing into his cavity, and also shows me dragging my plastic tarp over the side, then cleaning and folding it.

I use Ken Chaplin of Skull Mountain, LLC. He is awesome!

Thanks Hirshey, I know the area never seen or heard of them though.

Thanks Hirshey, I know the area never seen or heard of them though.
If you ever get a chance to visit his shop or take him something to work on... it is incredible! He also ends up at a lot of the sportsman's shows on the west side. He has done my deer for multiple seasons, and I recommend him to a lot of my friends. His attention to detail and pride in his work is great, and both Ken and his wife Lisa are just incredibly good people. Makes it an easy decision to drive 2.5 hours to drop off a head and see what treasures are in his shop. :)

Thank you

Just a gorgeous bull!

Awesome! I might be a little jealous ;)

That looks really nice, I love the euro's. I'm having a euro done on my Wyoming moose right now, but haven't gotten it back yet. After seeing yours, I'm going to love it. Very cool Hirshey.

Very nice bull Hirsh, congrats

I know this is really old... but I finally figured out how to get my moose video uploaded (I think...) I figured the topics have slowed down in the off-season enough that I'm not cutting into someone else's limelight hopefully.
I was able to compress the size and trim it to upload to my Instagram in a couple parts, so here's hoping it works for Hunt-WA.
Part 1
-
Part 2
-
Also... I think I finally decided to get him entered for the state books... I already know he scores 155 and is entered all-time B&C... but aside from taking him into the Wenatchee Sportsmans show, is there anything else I need to do? Can he even still be entered? :dunno:
-
I can't get your pics to open. :dunno:
I bet your still enjoying moose meat. :chuckle:

That's a fine big bull! Good video and some good hunting. Thanks for posting.

Yeah.. I double-lunged him and the bullet stayed in the offside hide, so all that pressure from his breaths came out that one hole... kinda brutal, but also was a relief to see! I knew he wasn't going to go far.

Look out lokidog, I would venture to say that one of Hunt WA's finest in the field is probably pretty good with that skeet gun....
All that aside, I would also like to see video of you just after the kill, had to be on cloud nine and pumped up beyond belief after letting him go after a photo op and then getting back on him. Another amazing success story from your hunting excursions. How is your new job working out? You don't miss the fires yet do you?

I'll see if I can clip it to size.. it took an act of God to get those other files to work.
Speaking of work, the NOAA gig is only an offseason filler. I still put on a pack and carry a Pulaski come April. :) but I certainly enjoy the work! Good people and great pay make it easy to get up in the morning.

Ha! I felt he did a fine job.. especially for a quick setup when that critter started coming in. Too bad that bush was in the way for the second part of the video, but I am still amazed at the steam rolling out of his side.

Hirshey, did you happen to run into an older gentleman named Ken that day? Just curious.
