I decided last minute to hunt deer and elk this year with a AR. Decided to build another 6.5 Grendel/ .264 LBC in a SPR.
Went with a BlackHole Weaponry 18" SPR contour in a 8 twist. Had the Cerakote done localy and mixed to my liking with a combination of burnt bronze and graphite black. It gives it a dark bronze look in the light and almost a olive drab look in the shadows. Turned out to be a solid half moa performer or better, I've been very pleased with it and recoil is almost non existent with the adjustable has block and Fortis Red muzzle brake.

This is the first 5 shot group, rounds 10-14 on the new barrel. The first round was the one 1 moa high out of the group, from a cold clean bore at 130 yards. The next 4 stacked up, a group like that gives a guy confidence in a rifle.

Thanks!👍

Looks like she is a keeper.
We will see what my brother digs out of the safes. The new 308, 6.5 Grendel and 243 wssm still need there first kills. He told me he wanted to use the new 30-378. I told him fat chance :chuckle:
-
The .243 WSSM would be fun. I'm waiting on a .243 LBC barrel.
-
Good looking rifle.. I will be taking out the 6.8 spc for deer probably a couple times in the late season..
-
Here's a 6.8 that my wife plans on using this year
-
Very nice Jay! I like the glass.👍
-
Both of those are awesome rifles! I really want to build a hunting specific AR platform rifle, but I'm wanting someone to get the .300 WSM figured out. ;)
-
Very nice looking AR's. Good luck on your hunts.
-
Beautiful gun there BiggerH.
-
I'll probably take the .450 Bushmaster out a few times when I hit the thick stuff this deer season.
-
I wanted to build a hunting AR this year really bad but ran into car issues and got the windows in the house replaced. Just nothing left over for it. Next year, i think i will be building a Grendel.
That said if i pointedly do smaller game (coyotes, raccoons) or target cats this year after deer and elk season is over, i will be carrying this.

-
Biggerhammer, that is a beautiful rifle!
Yours as well Huntingbaldguy.
What kind of weights are they without mags?
I have been dieing to build a .308 or another .300 win mag (when available)
-
11 lbs as pictured without a mag.
-
Mine was a little over 10 lbs. 10 lbs 2 oz or something with optics.
-
Still wanting to build a larger caliber AR. For now I only have a coyote set up. Headed to Montana to bust some coyotes next month.

You guys have some great looking firearms. BiggerH, you never fail to impress. Say, nice badger!

I will be packing my 6.8 for regular season. Mainly to just shoot at coyotes since i have a late tag it will have to be a big buck for me to pull the trigger during regular season

That's great for AR owners to see more people hunting with them and more mainstream. Keep an eye out for more hunting articles featuring MSRs coming to the news stands, there is going to be a push in the media coming down the pike.
-
Nice lookin' weapons boys, but I gotta say, I love the Badger better.
-
My everything gun ;)
-
Some great looking rifles. Only problem I see is they are missing a position for the selector switch.
-
Full auto is over rated.😏
-
I'll run an AR as soon as I can get one in 375 Ruger that weighs less than 8#! :chuckle:
Although I might settle for one in 338 Federal if I ever get around to it.
Awesome Badger!👍
Speaking of Badgers, is the 6.5 Badger going to make it out this season? I planned to run mine next weekend but I went and notched my deer tag with one of the pistols this morning.

7.62 works fine, but I know one company is working on the .300wsm, just waiting not so patiently. ;)
This is a DPMS 3G1 w/ swaro 1-6

Several people have told me that SSA stuff shoots well through their 6.8's

Wife's first two shots shooting a evil black hunting rifle.
6.8 ARP barrel shooting SSA 110's.

I've been carrying a 6.8mmSPCII for longer ranges and a 458SOCOM for brush. Both fun rifles.

I'm going to do a .458 Socom just to do one. What twist did you go with? What bullet are you using for hunting?
-
I hope to have one on this thread within a year. Working on it!
-
I don't hunt deer any more, but my last deer hunt was with my 6.8 SPC. The gamie that stopped to check me out had never seen one until I showed him a round. Now I have a Black Hole 6mmX6.8 SPC that I really like. It's a flat-shooting round, and still legal for deer in this State! The accuracy of the ARs is amazing!
-
I'm going to do a .458 Socom just to do one. What twist did you go with? What bullet are you using for hunting?
1 in 14 is the twist on my rifle. 1 in 18 or slower doesn't stabilize the 500/600 grain large sub-sonic bullets. I don't see a suppressor in my future, but just in case, I wanted the faster twist. The 1 in 14 will stabilize the lighter bullets as well.
This year I bought a box of Barnes 350 grain TSX bullets (solid copper hollow points). They are not ideal for the SOCOM in that they were designed for the 458 Win Mag velocities and don't mushroom at SOCOM velocities out past ~50 yards. I wasn't concerned with that as I built this rifle as a strictly defense rifle for an Alaska backpack/kayaking trip I took last summer. I figured if a Grizzly was heading my way, I'd empty the magazine (11 shots) pop in another magazine and see if I need to shoot some more. Thankfully that didn't come about, but I think I would have been ok. Check the video here:
Firing the .458 SOCOM!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYzWXLzJWkQ#ws)
I carried the .458 a few times this year looking for Deer and Black Bear. It's only a 100 yard (or less) rifle. I have a 1X Red Dot Aimpoint M4s optic on it. IIRC I have it sighted in 1" high at 50 yards and it hits 3" low at 100 yards. At 200 yards I believe it's something like 10" low! I think either a BB or Deer would drop with a well placed .458" 350 grain bullet, even if the bullet doesn't mushroom.
I actually carried the 6.8mm many more times this year. I have a 2-7x33 Leupold optic on it. I have it set for 2" high at 100 yards and it hits 4" low at ~300 yards. I'm using some Federal Fusion 115grain factory loads for the 6.8mm.
Something to consider (I wish I would have known). There are supposedly some unscrupulous .458SOCOM barrel makers out there that have given the finger to the original 458 designer and are manufacturing reverse engineered barrels and not paying royalties to Marty/Teppo Jutsu. BHW and Wilson Combat come to mind. Do a search on "Reverse Engineered" over at:
http://458socomforums.com (http://458socomforums.com)
Good luck,
sam

How much you give me for a virgin Rock River complete 458 SOCOM with loaded new 150 rounds Cor-Bon, new brass, Hornady dies and Hornady projectiles ?

I have an archery tag this year, so probably not hunt with it this year unless I go out for some Yotes. But next year is game on!
Just finished building up a 6.5 Grendel. Got a killer innovations brake for it, waiting on shims to time it in properly, but had to take a Glam shot with it in place..

Shot sub MOA with Hornady Amax 123grain on the very 1st day out. 1st three shots @ 100yrds to verify group before adjusting scope. That is 5-6-7th shots ever thru barrel.

Brownells 18" 1:8 twist. $299 and comes with a matching head-spaced bolt.

I was going to get an Ruger American in a .308, but I love my AR. So I decided to wait and get an AR10. Was debating between the dpms 3g1 and aeroprecision .308 full build. Either way, when I hunt its with an AR for sure. I have an acog on my .223, but not sure what optic to put on the .308. Any recommendations?

so, AR.... that stands for "awesome rifle?" :chuckle: yeah im hunting with an awesome rifle this year! took a bear and deer with it so far this year. whats more awesome than a lever action .308 with a detachable magazine, forward locking rotary bolt, and single piece stock?

AR isn't "Awesome Rifle" its "America's Rifle" and that one works too.

I'm going to go buy a bunch of Sitka gear, a Tikka, Vortex binos, range finder, and scope, and go set up next to your hunting camp now. The goal is to get you so mad and distracted that you can't focus on hunting. Then I'm going to shoot your animal with a gun in a real caliber from a real gun that uses a bolt action instead of your fancy ARs!
Unless somebody wants to hurry up and build an AR 10 in 325 WSM.

yorketransport if you can sell me a pre 64 in .243 for under 1000 im all ears. as for the other two available calibers, good luck finding a pre 64. the window of opportunity there is almost nil, the .284 wasnt introduced until 1963 so you have exactly one year of production to get a good one.

Yeah they make some great guns by the sounds of it. I have really thought about getting a upper in 325 wsm.
I am just finishing up my latest project a 7mm STW. I think the 325 wsm may be next.

I don't want to thread jack but it seems relevant so I'll ask. I have been wanting to build a 300 wsm AR build but have briefly read that these have problems. I am just starting to research so I don't have much info yet. Anyone done this caliber? If so, what barrel length and twist would be recommended?

If it starts with "AR" it is in no way a "Thread Jack".
I would look towards a 22" inch barrel or so and a 10 twist. I would have to do the research on the bolt and what would need to be done, the conversions necessary to the upper receiver but I could have a AR barrel chambered in .300 WSM or .325 WSM on my front porch in no time if I choose.

I am just finishing up my latest project a 7mm STW. I think the 325 wsm may be next.
Cool project!
The pills for the 7mm STW are going to be spendy!

Just finished assembling another .264 LBC/6.5 Grendel, this one has a BlackHole Weaponry "Hammer Flare" profile, the barrel weighs in at 1lb 9.7oz. 16" , 8 twist with rifle length gas. Runs like a champ and it shoots well.
The Cerakote is a mix of Titanium and Graphite black. I call it "Terminal grey" :).
A couple pics before my barrels arrived. The 5.56 mag was just for the photos.

This was the last 3 shot group I fired from it on Thanksgiving. 100 yards with factory Hornady 123gr SST's . The hole bellow the group was my aiming point and of course I choked the third shot.
