Usually a few threads posted already on some big general bucks........where are they, it's been 4 days now? :dunno:
-
Ive been wondering the same thing it seems a little slow this year.
-
That's what I ask every night when I get home. I know he is there but where is he at in the daytime :dunno:
-
was thinking the same thing..I have not heard of any big bucks shot
-
It's been slow normally by now there are so many threads it's hard to keep up, not so much this year though.
-
I'll post one when I get a better picture from the owner!
-
haven't seen **** here either.
maybe the second week might be better?
-
Go down about 20 posts, see the "opening day Methow buck." Looks like a big buck to me. But I do agree, don't seem to be as many as usual.
-
Weather has been a big factor here on the West side, but maybe I'm just making excuses. Hopefully Ill post one tomorrow! ;)
-
I know of one that hit the dirt...

I know of one that hit the dirt...
:yeah: Unless its the same buck, make that two. Gnarly non typical.
-
Methow Valley has been about as slow as I've ever seen it, heard three shots in as many days while over there hiking the last three days. Maybe the doe tag holders really are planning on eating those tags.
On another note, a buddies daughter scored the lowest scoring legal buck I have ever seen, tagged it in Entiat yesterday, I bet it grosses in the 12" range.

Yeah, still waiting for that photo by the way.

I just pm'd you. I guess this answers my question. :(

Got this from the Methow Grist. The poster skins deer for free if you donate the hide.
She's a bit north of Twisp and has ben doing this for a few years.
Wsmnut
We have skinned 37 deer so far, in the first three days. Last year I did 65 the whole week, so I feel like it has been pretty busy. Definitely more does due to the extra doe tags given out, and more small legal bucks than usual. There has been just a few of the big bruisers.
One hunter told me the lungs of his deer were black at the bottom like a smoker's. I can only figure that is from the fire and/or living in ashes.
-
Worst year I have seen in a while. I remember having a hard time getting it done in 2006 for the same reason. too hot, too dry, bad moon phase, everything brushed up by the time it gets light...
-
Way too many Predators... I guess. I just got out of surgery last Thursday Lumbar L-4/5 :bash: it Hurt like F$&f stuck in bed 5 days in row and I wish I am out there helping my daughter fill her tag. Had to postpone next year. :(
-
I hope more people start knocking them down. Stay in the woods guys, it only takes one to make it a good day.

I think this one qualifies! :chuckle:

I don't know if you consider this one a big one or not, but its the biggest one I've ever killed. Got him Monday morning about 10 am in Tonasket. :dunno:
-
In the woods? :dunno:
-
Been hunting GMU 448 and 460 hard and only had one doe come out of the forest into a cut I was watching yesterday. Waited for a buck to follow but nothing else showed up. Not much sign around, minimal tracks and no droppings. Hoping late buck yields better results for me this year. :dunno:

That one would count! Cant believe the skull is already cleaned.
-
I hunted around republic for five days saw only five does we beat the brush tried getting up high and glassing just don't seem to be the deer there that used to be it was very warm for this time of year so maybe that played a factor back to chasing blacktails now good luck everyone
-
I heard there was a pretty good buck standing in downtown Republic on the opener giving folks all sorts of angst.
-
Second day of archery season in Oregon 1984. My buddy Bone and I arrive in Sumpter for a hunt. There was a trail of arrows from one end of town to the other. Arrows in fences, houses, local shop and the gas station. "Must have been a BIG buck walking through town last night when the bar closed!", Bone said.
That night when we came back into town for supper at the restaurant the state police asked us to show them our bows and particularly our arrows. Seems we were right. A lot of residence not so happy with bowhunters that day! Thankfully we had custom fletched arrows and Savora broadheads...not what they were looking for.

It's called a full moon. It's been awhile since we've had a full moon for opening week. It's going to get better.
-
2014 modern..
Does the guy in this picture know that board will disqualify the score? Nice buck
-
Full moon. Clear nights. Warm temps. Massive fire areas blocking our valley and Paysaten. No snow in paysaten. No migratory bucks for us.
Should of figured it out sooner and had a plan b ready. But we hunted the valley hard, end to end, top to bottom. Know it much better now. Met some cool local hunters. Had some delicious grouse to eat at camp. But man, 3 days scouting, 3 days hunting, and never saw a single buck. Maybe a dozen does and fawns. Next year well have a plan b ready if the same conditions occur.
Now just have to hope for a west side late season blackie. Assuming I find a date without kids soccer and football games...Will likely get to try some tag soup. Know any good recipes??

I'm aware of that but thanks for the heads up, not going to be in any book lol and yes bone takes about a day to boil clean if they haven't been frozen!
-
That was more for my benefit than yours. I like to let them get good and stinky first. :chuckle:

Maybe there just isn't enough habitat?

Always is, seems to prefer the cop shop as his hangout.

Story on this bad boy?

my son and I have been out on the west side chasing blacktails now. We still haven't run across a single buck. Lots of does and fawns. The kiddo gets a kick out of just being able to tag along and be out in nature. Building great memories so far.
On a side note, does anyone know if the hancock property off NF75 allows hunting without a hancock permit? It looks like it is part of the Clearwater wildness area and goes back a ways the last time I was in that area. Good luck and happy hunting

you just stick with those Blacktail ..if you are seeing doe then there will be bucks ..everyday that passes by from here on out makes blacktail hunting even better :twocents:

A stud benchleg was shot today up here! Got to help skin it out!!
More that 4 pts!!!!
And yes I have a photo.. :chuckle:
-
Quit taking estrogen pills and being a big tease, and show the photo! :chuckle:
-
i figured with the little moon, cold, stormy weather for the opener there would be lots of bucks hitting the dirt!
(insert sarcasm)
Not the easiest hunting when its sunny and 65 during the day, dry, hot and the deer are bedding 20 minutes after daylight. Typical WA bs. They could never offer a descent modern season in this state. Appeasing the 300,000 people who modern rifle hunt would completely wipe out the already dismal deer population if they did. They want your money but don't want you to harvest a deer. Not saying its impossible but the odds are against you in this state. This state is about money, not management. I would like to see it like Nevada and there is no otc tag for deer. You must draw. Our state offers great hunting opportunity and with proper management could really offer awesome trophy class hunting but with such demand, the state getting rich and so many people shooting the first legal deer they see it will never be.

2014 modern..
Don't post that big basin buck on here:-). We only have spikes and forkys in eastern WA so you must've got him in Idaho, wink, wink! All joking aside, congrats! That's a beautiful buck! I'd love to hear your hunt story.
-
The only deer I have seen all week is a doe that tried to throw herself under my truck while I was driving home from the woods tonight, She didn't succeed in killing herself. I haven't even heard any gun fire either.
-

Probably the reason why he's still alive :chuckle:
Once in late October (2010ish) I was driving through Republic and there was a 160" +/- mule deer buck bedded down on the East side of town. Very heavy.

Kazekurt nope not a basin buck, backpack hunt here in washington.. Honestly two days hiking in, 30 minute hunt.. Passed him first then showed again and couldn't look a gift horse in the mouth! 550 yard poke, quartering away entered last rib and out opposite front shoulder! Thanks for the congrats as well
-
Congrats. Not sure why anyone would pass that buck anywhere in this state.
-
or any other for that matter. Unless the photo is completely deceiving with that short box, that thing looks ginormous.
-
Haha just didn't like the short mains and small fronts.. Ended up being 27.5 wide, looking straight down on him he wouldn't look up and just had a massive fuzzy head that was deceiving at the time! Frame wise he's very respectable.. Each year I try and up my standards and I guess I've had a pretty good run the last few years and I look forward to muleys every year and once you send it that's the end for the year.. And the stick between the antlers is just to prevent shrinkage as the head and sutures dry..
-
once you send it that's the end for the year
I understand completely! That's one of the reasons I took up photography :chuckle:
-
this one count???
