Title: Introduction & Moses Lake/soap lake Coyote
Post by: MapleValley556 on October 17, 2014, 10:49:25 AM
New member here, wanted to say hello to everyone; born and raised in Washington currently reside around 4 corners in maple valley. I'm looking for guidance on coyote hunting over in the soap lake/Moses lake/Ephrata area. Not looking for anyone's special spots just looking for a starting point, access areas/roads, best practices for the area etc. any help would be greatly appreciated.

This will be the first time going out for coyotes. I've heard the area is good and my wife's family owns a house near the tail end of Moses lake near Rockyford creek off hwy 17. I've done a bit of reading, bought a few books to get general knowledge, but experience is priceless so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan

Spent last week duck hunting/coyote scouting around the frenchman creek by moses lake area. I second what Rick says, lots of seeded scat. Tons of sign, and they were singing all night over there and even saw one on the gravel access roads. Plenty of public hunt land but sage brush was killer and little to few hills that allowed you to get above that level and get any sort of vantage. It was also crowded with duck/deer opener.

I live in the tacoma area, and if you ever wanted to split gas, I'd be down for a trip. School and work schedule allowing of course...

No clue where maple valley is, but welcome. You can be,told, read and watch videos. But the best learning is trial and error. But advice is helpful. Just remember, free advice is often worth what it costs!lol
What I can tell you is to watch the wind, there sense of smell is amazeing.camo ya and no. I have got them in work cloths. I think what is most important is keeping movement to a minimum. Don't be afraid to mix your calling up if something isn't working. Be patient, normally it seems like they come in in the first five minutes. But i have seen them come a runnin after twenty. When you are done with a set scan the hole area not once, but twice. Even three and four never hurts. There have been a few times when the music stops andvim ready to move on that I have looked around and had one waiting to dance. I'm south of mosses, if ur around and it works, pm me and maybe we can see what we can scare up.

I grew up in Moses. Everytime I go over there, MANY times, I see more hunters than anything. Potholes, Othello, Stratford, Dodson road area are crowded.
I have learned to find pockets, small areas, usually far apart, little 1-5 acre areas that most folks pass by. A small spot by a wheat field, maybe 100' X 100' that they cannot farm, old abandoned building sites, if there is no brush go prone and use the land contour to hide. Sneak to your stands, irrigation circles well points. Corn fields. I have had better luck north of I 90.
Maple Valley is pretty populated but there are some pockets.

Maple Valley is part of the wetside.......think black diamond, or Enumclaw area, basically south east of Seattle and north east of Tacoma by an hr or so. I travel to Moses area frequently all seasons but do not live there, thought i would get some local insight. Sounds like it might be more populated than expected, during the winter months i do hear a lot of shots, but never ventured out myself, mainly fishing.

Look forward to being part of the forum. as for those offering to meet up; i will see what happens, like i said just had a baby 3 months ago so as much as i keep telling myself time will free up, reality may slap me in the face as usual.

Thx,
Ryan

Maple Valley is also on the north side of I-90 going into Moseslake,  at the State Park before you cross the bridge!!! LOL
on the other side of the lake by the airport is Cascade Valley.

Got ya,,,,, it's that way! :yeah: wow it sounds  scary up north. Seems like the only time I see another dog hunter is either when I take some one with me or I take a selfie! If you need more advice your at the right place. Most on here will give a little. Combine it and you should end up with a hole bunch of questionable advice. :dunno:lol good luck!

Might be Mae Valley that is by state park west of I-90?

I-90 runs east and west but you are correct. it is Mae Valley not Maple.

Whoops, my bad, meant west of state park, north of I-90. Spell check sure didn't help me there:)
Good luck coyote hunting! Plenty of yotes for everybody here in the basin. I usually scout/road hunt first light in morning to find dogs moving from open fields back to thick cover. Then I know where to set up and call later in morning.

Please be very careful hunting for coyotes during waterfowl season. Especially around popular duck hunting areas.  Duck hunters are hard to see.  We always coyote hunt AFTER duck season especially if we're hunting around water.

This is only kind of off topic, but anyone have any recommendations for binoculars for a decent price. I do have some old ones my dad gave to me awhile back; but when i say old, i mean, big, bulky, and heavy, they work great but i just feel like a newer pair could potentially do the same job in a lighter form. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I might try getting out to my local stores to check a few out as well, but i would rather recommendations made here vs at the sales counter by a sales associate.

Thanks in advance.

I picked up some Leupold yosemite's 6x30 at Cabelas a few years ago for $80.00 when they were on sale.  They stay in my rig year round and get pounded.  Never had any issues with them.  Not great for long distance stuff but they're really nice for coyote hunting.

I had a pair of swarovski binnos, I can tell you what section of ground there in but not exact location. Moral is,the cheap ones lose just as well as the spendy ones. I have a small pair of 10x append, I really like them. Clear and never had any fog issues. Also have a few pair of other brands in higher power. I prefer a lower magnification. It may just be me,but I would stick with a 8x or 10x. And the smaller frame so you can stick them in a pocket. For the money I would look at Allen,Bushnell or Nikon. Yes there are nicer ones out there, but for the money these will do what you need Cleary. Then you can take the $900 you save and by a gun or invest for retirement when the dog hunt in gets good! :twocents:

when bird season is over we'll set you up down the road from the inlaws. Until then there is just too much that can go wrong.

Sounds good Tom, I may do a little scouting over thanksgiving, looking for habitat, signs of Yotes, access areas etc.

Alright fellas, went out Scouting over thanksgiving and conditions were ok, thanksgiving morning was way to foggy to be productive. I did make a stand or two just to see if i could get any howls from any yotes, i got a few responses, yet i could not see anything, but thought it was productive, at least i know some Yotes were in the general area. I also came across an abandoned house/farmers cabin, looked like lots of Scat but maybe someone can confirm for this newbie, i also followed what appeared to be a game trail down to a small pond, were i located some old paw prints (very faint), i'm hoping this is a good also came across some fury, not sure if its a place where a yote was bedded down or if someone else shot it and some leftovers were present. Took a few pictures, let me know what you guys think. Only down side was had family around and couldn't dedicated as much time as i wanted, nor did i feel up to it on certain days after long nights of drinking crown with the fam. let me know if the images don't show up i have never posted images before. Another quick question...has anyone ever went after coyotes out in the Ravensdal/Selleck area, its DNR land before the green water and ceder water shed area? any suggestions for hunting coyotes on the wetside or in heavier cover such as old logging roads etc? Everything I've read about strictly speak to clear cuts fields etc. Probably all newbie questions but why not.
