Title: Where to start/New to hunting

I am new to the forum and was wondering if anyone is willing to teach me a thing or two and possibly let me tag along and watch if possible? I have my hunters education card but have no other experience.

This is my last year hear but I will probably stay in the area. I was raised in Okanogan county and raised a fair amount of animals for the county fair to support various hobbies (I was a nerd when I was younger). Lately I have picked up fly fishing with some help of a gentleman over in Moscow ID but due to classes and such I haven't gotten the chance to put anything I have practiced to use. I am interested in getting into hunting as well. My dad used to take my brother but he never took me. Due to family issues I can't rely on his word to take me out, he might next year but you never know, so I thought I would try asking around on a forum and or try to pick up some helpful advice.

Post by: Little Dave on November 23, 2014, 06:49:23 PM: Having a mentor can be really helpful, but you can learn a lot on your own too. Don't wait to start until you find a mentor. It's the perfect time now to start preparing for next season. Just do a little bit of something every day to gain knowledge and prepare for next season. Refine your shooting skill, improve your calling, get in top shape, go for a hikes with a camera, find and follow tracks in the snow and mud, read about the habits of the animal you are hunting. Talk to property owners in the place that you would like to hunt next fall.

Reading into your write up, I wouldn't focus on hunting with your dad and brother as a goal. If it happens, it happens. It's far better to clear your mind and focus on what you can create for yourself. Soon enough you can invite them on one of your hunts... if you want to. It might turn out that your way of hunting and their way of hunting isn't a very good match anyway.

If you want to open the tap on advice here, you'll need to tell us what you would like to hunt, and with what.

I've tried hunting deer on the Access Yes properties, I have not had much success. I just added a shotgun to my collection, and will probably be trying my luck at the upland game sometime soon. Little Dave: I just got a 30-06 and will be refining my shooting skills. I have also been trying to get as much as I can out of youtube videos. The hiking advice sounds like a great idea!

Post by: wsubeagle on December 01, 2014, 08:16:38 PM: There is a great range down by Lewiston that rents a trap machine for cheap. It is a nice range for rifle too. When it warms up a little I plan to head down there. Unfortunately, there aren't any ranges closer that I've been able to find.
