I saw some tracks last year while elk hunting on the back side of Round Mountain that I was pretty sure were wolf tracks. No pictures taken as I was limiting the amount of weight I was packing in. This last weekend we were up helping my grandfather get set-up, setting up our tent, cutting some wood, etc. for our upcoming season. On Sunday morning (10/19) I was up early and getting a fire going when I heard what I thought was some cow calling going on down by the river (North Fork Teiton). So I decided to sneak down there and see what was going on down there. I got to about 75 yards from the river and saw a very large coyote pacing the opposite river bank. No gun, no camera. I turned around to sneak back to camp to get my rifle and camera. I start to jog back to camp and am thinking how big it was and questioning whether it could be a wolf or not. :dunno:
Get the rifle and camera and head back down to the river. As I approach the area I saw the "coyote" I slow and sneak a little closer with the camera at the ready.
Then reality slaps me in the face as I see not one, but three wolves that have a mule deer doe pinned in the middle of the river. Absolutely no doubt that they are wolves, size alone tells me no way in H E double hockey sticks that these are coyotes. I take a couple pictures that don't turn out for crap (I am not very good with the camera, that is my daughters job). I will post one later on today if you promise not to make fun of the crappy photo!!
I have no idea what to do as these wolves continue to lunge at the deer for a few minutes trying to get it closer to the bank of the river. I know what I want to do, but my morals, integrity, and honor interfere with my true desire to give these critters a dirt knap. I could yell at them :bdid:, or I could just shoot and scare them off. :dunno:
The doe is not having a good time and I finally decide that I have seen enough. I shoot a round into the river bank and all 3 wolves turn and look at me, they didn't run, walk off, or even really flinch, they just stopped and looked right through me. Great, now what do I do. I chamber and fire three more rounds into the river bank and that was enough to drive the wolves off. The poor little doe didn't know what to do and remained in the river. I walked up to the river and was no more than 10 feet from her and talked to her and told her she was okay now and she could go away, she was safe. I got back to our camp on an adrenaline high and told the story to the family.
I have reported the sighting on the WDFW website and maybe they will acknowledge more than 5 breeding pairs!! I doubt it though :bash: :bash:
Looking forward to getting back up there!!!
-
naches - as much as I hate to agree with him on anything wolf related - does have a point about harassing wildlife.
WDFW would not look kindly on you firing rounds anywhere near their precious wolves, and as you can guess Naches has probably already dialed the 800 number to rat you out.
In the end that doe isn't long for this world, in shock standing in the river. Even if she does climb out of the water and gets normalized the wolves are in her territory and it won't be long until they encounter her again, and all the other deer in that vicinity :bash:
I'd love to see your pics, not a lot of guys see what you seen.
-
Negligently shooting and harrassing wildlife. Wow.
Make sure to take pictures if you shoot one. Hunt-wa would love to see pictures
:yeah: I get your intentions but I'd leave the part of your story where you fired 4 rounds at the wolves. Just my 2 cents. Glad you called wdfw though with the info.

Pics...

Where in my post did I say that I was eager to poach a wolf???
Negligently firing my rifle?? I know exactly where I was shooting!
Harrassing wildlife?? Hind site being 20/20, probably not a good choice. I wanted to save the doe...
I will gladly take pictures of any animal I shoot and post them on this site! But I will never shoot an animal illegally so no wolf pictures will be posted by me.
As I stated earlier, my morals, integrity, and honor prevent me from doing stupid stuff. I am a law abiding citizen and morals, integrity, and honor are all required when decisions are made!! I have been an active duty military member for 22 years and counting and I am not about to throw all of that away by breaking game laws, or any law for that matter.
-
I will post the crappy picture when I get home today.
-
Some things shouldn't be shared on here because of the internet Nazi's.
Now there will be a huge fight about them friggin' killing machines.......wolves !!
-
The only mistake you made was not gut shootin all 3 then rollin....

:yeah:
And I read no where that he shot at the wolves, but only into the river bank to scare them off.
-
First round was for their benefit. 2nd third and 4th if needed would have been for my benefit. Glad you did what you did and I see no problem with your report.
They have no intention of acknowledging them. It will be 5 more years before they gather enough data.

I'm a law abiding citizen too with a lot to loose. That said I'm glad it wasn't me being tempted on that river bank. I'd feel like crap walking away and not doing anything save trying to get a crappy pic or two. It would be a hard thing to watch and even harder thing to not take any illegal action.

I can't condemn the guy either and I think he showed a lot of restraint. Shame on WDFW for putting law abiding citizens in these positions as it's so much tougher to not shoot a wolf when you lack confidence in WDFW's managing of wolves. If WDFW was pro-active and aggressive in wolf documentation it'd be easier to walk away from a scene like this, but when you know your reporting the wolves lands on deaf ears........
-
cool story! i ran into a wolf in the cowiche during during elk muzzy...was about 20 yards in front of me....
-
WOW. Wolves in one of my favorite units... that sucks.
We ran into a doe carcass a couple of days after I filled my Elk tag, EA. Had it's throat ripped out and some of the guts exposed.... thought at the time that it was just a cougar but now that I think about it I the wounds appeared like they were stretched open, as if two animals were pulling it apart. No tracks. It was right next to a creek and we spent about an hour looking for any suspects... nada. I'm heading back over shortly and will keep my eyes peeled.
Any pics to share? Even crappy ones....
-
What's the front side of round mountain?
-
Sounds like you wasted a few to many rounds on a bank.
-
I don't understand why this isn't a story about 3 dead coyotes? Is there a daily limit or something?
-
Got no problem with what you did . Thanks for sharing
-
:chuckle:
-
To hell with them wolves! And anyone who supports the WDFW for lying to all of us about wolf transplants!!!!
To the OP, thank you for being honest. Alot here would not of just shot dirt..
You wolf lovers think hunting sucks now? Wait until these wolves take over like they did Idaho.
-
I read your account again. Really the only thing I have to lecture you about is that you spent 4 rounds presumably of 5 and you have 3 wolves that could want to eat your bacon. Other than that, I think you did good. Crud photo or not, I'd love for you to post

Bone, I was wondering if anyone would catch that... My wife wasn't too happy about it either!!
I normally have extra rounds with me, but didn't this time, won't happen again.
-
I know of someone who saw a breading pair with 3 pups in that unit last year. The female was grey with a collar and the male was black.
-
Welcome to oak creek feeding station folks, just sit back in the wagon while we visit the wolves. If you see an elk please let me know .
-
:mgun:
-
interesting, as I was up in the sawtooths [wa] for a week of deer.We saw 2 deer in 6 day's.We saw wolf scat,in each basin we hunted. We hunted around Hoodoo pass area.8012 ft elevation. I'll be looking for a new hunting area.

They were just passing thru obviously. (insert sarcasm emoticon here)

I'm sorry but I'll never understand the logic behind people saying wolves are good for the ecosystem. They have no natural predators and they reproduce at a much faster rate than the animals they kill.
So, can one of the people that say wolves are good for the ecosystem please riddle me this; In the years to come when their numbers become much more substantial and they continue to only grow in population and the deer and elk numbers continue to dwindle at alarming rates, how then will the wolves be good for the ecosystem??? Remember, wolves never ever stop killing and the animals they kill have absolutely no defense against them. So how can a perfect killing machine that never stops, continually reproduces at a considerabally faster rate than anything they kill, be good for the ecosystem??? Please do tell!!!
And to the OP, kudos to you sir for having a moral conscience!! Even if it went against what, some, choose to call the natural balance of the ecosystem.
-
I watched three wolves in the blues chase my Bull and his cows from last year for five full minutes. when I talked to the Game warden about it he told that they where just passing through. He said if there was a pack living in the era he would be hearing more reports, so obviously they where just moving through.
Nice guy but I don't like his kind of logic, unfortunately its going to get worse before it gets better.
-
So from reading your story, you are eager to poach a wolf. Doesnt seem right. Wolves are good for the ecosystems. Leave them alone
And from the Pullman wolf thread:
somebody forgot to shovel and shut up. what an idiot.
Interesting.
-
Of course they are just passing through. Once the easy food is gone, they will move on. Common sense... :bash:
I think there is some merit to the whole 'balancing the ecosystem' mantra. Like in parts of Alaska, BC, and other very remote and wild places. But here in the mainland USA, that ship has sailed. Too many humans and nothing will change that. we can barely manage the deer and elk numbers and habitat as it is. Introducing more alpha predators who will kill for sport with no regard for, or concept of, 'balance' is just a pipe dream. Something will have to give. And deer and elk and farm animals, pets, coyotes, and anything else in the wolves path will wind up paying for it. All because of some false sense of 'balance' that may come. It is just an environmentalist wolf worshiping romantic pipe dream. Balance. Right....

Those things could have killed you. Your lucky you made it out alive. :chuckle: I hope you had a side arm to defend yourself.
-
Sorry this would of been a better post if I had read wdfw asking info about 3 wolves shot in the rimrock!
-
Nice catch Bracer40! Looks like Naches Sportsman plays on both sides of the fence...
And he is calling me a poacher and the other guy an idiot. Who is the idiot??

We've been working on his personality for a couple years now. :chuckle: It is a work in progress. :chuckle:

:chuckle:. :chuckle:Hey I'm as guilty of it as the next guy. The crime? Speaking before thinking or as I've seen more than a few times online....typing & posting before thinking.

We need PICS!
-
I know you are trying to fit in with that USFS crowd you run around with, but I have to warn you. You live in Naches and there are still enough locals around that will hang a man by his bootlaces from the nearest tree for less than that. :)
-
I have heard a rumor of an archery huter nwatching a wolf come past there tree stand this year (or some thong like that up there in Rimrock unit)
I had a camera out for a few moths up on top of Pine Grass, and know of a few other cameras that are still up there, its only time before one of those cams get a pic of one of the wolfs.
Cant wait to see pic, good or bad
Im with you, on you doing the right thing, but to avoid the wolf lovers tearing in to you, just leave shooting or harassing part of the story out.
Im sure there a some on here that are probably sending the WDFW a link to this thread to try and get you in to trouble for admitting that you harassed the wolfs :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
Great to see they have their own special defender in Yakima
 :o
-
Pretty sure I heard a wolf in the Little Naches last weekend.
-
as long as it wasn't the other way around :yike:
-
My father in law has seen wolves on short and dirty, and i spoke t a guy late elk season last year on pinegrass who said he has seen a female with a radio collar near section 3 lake.
-

That picture looks like there is little to much heavy petting going on. :dunno:

When you hear a wolf there is no pretty sure about it, it will send chills down your spine and you will say out loud, "Holy S@#t! That was a wolf". :chuckle:

Hope your really not that ignorant but you do make sure everyone knows what a great saver of garbage you are and what slobs hunters are without knowing who really left the trash. Seems like you are batting for the other side so maybe not ignorant just an anti at heart :bash:
-
Subagang707 - You sir did the right thing, I see nothing wrong with what you did except what Boneaddict mentioned lol. Thanks for the story and post the pics.
Thank you sir for your 22 years of service.
Naches Sportsman - You are clueless.

Just sounds like some granoly tryin to bait people into getting all fired up......good on you for savin that doe... even if it was just temporarily
-
Have noticed a recovery of the deer herds the past 3 years in Yakima, Kittitas after the devastating. Loss to hair loss disease . So much for the deer and elk herds in Yakima and Kittitas.
Mind boggling a few supposed lovers of wildlife (sportsmen) celebrate the introduction of Canadian grey wolves
Into this area after what has happened in ID, MT WY and NE Washington

I see nothin' wrong with hazing those mutts....

Interesting that some are blaming the WDFW for wanting more wolves. When I spoke with them about my sighting they implied something different. Right now they have no jurisdiction concerning wolves as long as they are listed by the Feds. WDFW said they want all the reports they can get so they can document as many as possible. If they document enough, wolves can be de-listed in the state and WDFW can set up a tag system to hunt some. Maybe I got fed a line of BS, but I get the feeling WDFW would just as soon not deal with this any more than we do.
-
Hey, what the heck do any of us know, look how well wolves have helped to balance the ecosystem in Yellowstone. Yeah, its worked really well, the Elk population is down 70%, but hey, they say the beaver population is up and they give credit to the wolves for that. Brilliant!!!
-
"When you hear a wolf there is no pretty sure about it, it will send chills down your spine and you will say out loud, "Holy S@#t! That was a wolf."
That's what happened. I only say that I am pretty sure it was a wolf because the sound that I heard didn't sound like any of the wolf howls you hear on tv or the internet. It was nothing I have ever heard before. Definitely a canine and not yippy like a coyote. The other evidence that points in the direction of a wolf is that the bull elk that had been bugling all night and morning directly above our camp shut up as soon as I heard this "wolf." He had literally had been bugling two minutes prior and as soon as I heard this noise that elk shut up. I never heard from him again.
I'm pretty sure it was a wolf.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe I read some where that the wolf's are de-listed by the Feds and are listed as Endangered by WA state.
-
I believe that is correct Gasman. Its in the states hands, at least in Eastern Washington. Might be different on the Westside.

Wolves are still federally protected in 2/3 of wa st. The state has jurisdiction over the far eastern 1/3 of the state (n.e.)

Fortunately, the biologist knows what's up and it's not the game warden who makes those sorts of management decisions.

but there needs to be a population built up in the east slopes central cascades before having a oil lottery system established.
I'd prefer he killed all three of them and we never have enough to establish a oil lottery system. :twocents:

I thought this was good

^^^^^^ :chuckle: :chuckle: that's funny

I was incorrect. The state does have jurisdiction over the eastern 1/3 of the state. However they are between a bit of a rock and a hard place. If they don't continue to manage for recovery the feds will step in and take it back over. Not easy to appease the hunters, ranchers, and feds at the same time (not to mention the unknowing in King county....) I do believe them however when they say the more confirmed documentation the sooner they can take some action.
-
So did any one see or hear wolves during rifle elk this year? Buddy heard one just before season and we saw two sets of tracks after it snowed one morning.
-
The purpose of wolves in today's society as said by many environmental groups are 1st destroy private property rights. 2nd sports hunting as it is today. Finally they will use can't hunt so need for guns. when wolves roamed the USA freely human population of less than 30 million now we have 340 million ther is not room for both
-
It would be sweet if one of you guys knew how to capture them and train them to eat the liberals in Washington state :twocents:. That is a good use for them, but I have a feeling liberals don't taste good.
NACHES SPORTSMAN, you crack me up!!

While I was back in Rimrock during elk season I was sitting in camp butchering my elk when the WDFW called (Scott Becker) and wanted to discuss my wolf sighting. I talked to him for about 15 or 20 minutes and he convinced me to send the crappy picture in to him. So when I returned home from camp this last Monday I sent him the picture and got a reply email on Tuesday confirming that it was a wolf I took a picture of. I will post the picture on here as long as you all promise to not make fun :chuckle: of the perfectly focused twig and blurry wolf!! And Naches has to promise to never comment on any wolf thread again...

Looks even crappier uploaded. They must have some good photo editing stuff at WDFW..

is this one of those blurry pictures that you have to cross your eyes in order to see it?
-
Maybe Dan-O can help with the pic? :dunno:
-
Wolf photo, followed by coyote photo.
-
Where in the pic is the wolf supposed to be?
-
:yike: WHATTTTTT!!!! :yike: You're a liar!!! That's the best blurry grainy photo of a Bigfoot I've seen in a long time and dan-o's pic skills have nothing on you. :chuckle: Wow, is really all I can say..... :chuckle:

I saw one the last day of rifle season. I was walking a trail by myself heading up to the high country. Hadn't seen anyone else in hours. I stopped to grab a snack and fill up my water bottle. After a 10 minute break, I heard a bird or squirrel or something, I looked back and saw a wolf coming over the crest of the hill, in my direction, parallel but about 15 yards off the trail I just walked on. That sob was following me. Luckily there was enough brush between us that I saw him before he saw me. He hadn't realized that I had stopped. He bolted at the sound of my lever action without even looking back. He was almost white, and big. I'd like to have a pic but I thought grabbing the rifle was more prudent at the time. Keep your eyes on a swivel.
