One of my best friends came hunting with us during the General Modern season out in the Colfax area this year. He hunted a few years in high school but never managed to connect. After he graduated high school he joined the Army Reserves, he has done two tours in Iraq and over the last 10 years this was his first chance to hunt again as he always seems to have drill on opening weekend.
Because of work he was only able to hunt for the first three days of the season and neither of the bucks I got him on were 3 point or better. He had a lot of fun and was a good sport, but I was disappointed that I couldn't get him on a legal buck. In fact I'm more bummed about that than not filling my own tag.
My question is, what kind and of advice can you guys give me for the late hunt on IEP's ground on Mount Spokane. I have hunted a few days up there in the late season in years past, but both trips were mostly to familerize myself with the area for when I eventually draw a moose tag.
I'm not looking for a honey hole, I'm mostly curious about what elevations to hunt at and whether you guys are seeing deer Iin the steep and deep or the cuts. I'm not much of a timber hunter, I have always hunted fields, CRP, the Snake River Breaks, and the Blue Mountain Foothills.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the deer I've seen late season in 124 have been in cuts and on the edge of timber, but the problem is that all IEP land gets pounded with hunters

Get a IEP permit from whites boots and go to Day My. Spokane road. Lots of public land to hunt. Just don't be picky, it's a any buck area for a reason. Their are big deer to, just don't count on seeing a monster though they are around. Grunt call every 15-20 min and be patient. You should be eating some venison. GOOD LUCK

I would say that it'll be hard to fill a tag there. I scouted all summer and found a good spot where I'd seen a few bucks walk through, only to have 4 different people walk in and hunt right on top of me, one person try to off road through where I was set up, and a guy park his truck next to the spike I was walking up on (logging road on the other side of a cut in) and slam his door. Everything is really pressured there right now. I do; however, wish you the best of luck.

What's the chances of giving my 9yo daughter a good hunt for any white tail on the IEP ground? Getting white tail access is tough!

If she isn't picky you should be successful. PM me if you come to town. I know of a couple smaller IEP parcells that don't get hit as hard as Thompson Creek. I'd be glad to show you or at least point you in the right direction. Just make sure you get your permit.

There are bucks around. Early season was pretty slow, I only saw 4 does in 5 days of hunting with 15+ other trucks on the same property. The rain and cooler temps we've been having should help. The last weekend of late buck is your huckleberry. Find the does and a buck shouldn't be far. IEP holds some good deer, but getting away from people is difficult some times. After the first weekend a lot of people get discouraged and leave so it only gets better after the opener! I have hunted a large portion of the iep around Spokane, if you have any more questions shoot me a pm and I will try to help. Good luck!

Lots of deer, and lots of hunters. But remember it's public land and a lot of us have nowhere else to hunt. The deer are still their. My recommendation is to cover ground, and you will be successful. Hunt near the edge of thick draws, and be alert. Let a grunt or two out ever hour or so. I've harvested a lot of bucks up their in the late season.

Hey guys! I was hoping that someone else here knows more about that area than I do. Deer area 1050 is in the southwest part of 124 and I wanted to know if there is any IEP land in 1050 that I could get on this weekend for my 13 year old daughter? :)

I cant think of any thats in 1050. But there are a lot of alfalfa fields there. Im sure someone would let your daughter take a doe if you went and knocked on some doors. The best of luck to you.

Thanks Levi,
I was thinking that knocking on a few doors would be a good idea. I might try that in 1080 (Colfax) area also since it is closer to home.
