Post by: TommyH on October 22, 2014, 07:51:18 AM
So what have you seen? Are we going to have a early rut this year? In NE WA I have Been seeing lots of rubs/scrapes the last week. I Have been hearing reports of bucks chasing does. A Buddie seen a big buck in pursuit following/smelling a doe. I seen a different big buck with doe last night. So how is the rut activity in your deer hunting areas????

IMO rut behavior is at least a  week earlier than normal across the board.   High bucks are going full bore already.

My buddy filled his tag yesterday. The bucks eye was gouched out I thought he shot it in the head but says it was already like that. Took it in to the taxidermist and he put his finger in their and said yup got in a fight and the other buck took his eye out. I guess it was shoved back in its eye socket. Craziest thing ever. But yeah its starting.

Been hunting Willapa hills area, bucks have been rubbing trees since before opening day, I killed a little forky on Saturday, he was with 2 does, but didn't smell like he was rutting. Saw 2 nice bucks in Clatskanie Oregon yesterday, big swollen necks and chasing does. Saw a nice 2 point today in SW Washington all rutty and chasing a doe. Going to take my brother out tomorrow, see if we can find another buck.

I have spike, and a 3 point chasing does around in my back yard. Also a guy I know, and his wife both shot nice BT's. they were both swollen up, and were with does. I saw a lot of rubs this last weekend. Pre- rut is on in my area. :twocents:b

Cam check today shows the spikes are run off from the larger bucks. The larger bucks are separately looking for does.
Also saw a good 3x3 bt cruising a field a half hour before dark. He has not been seen all summer, until now. It is about to get good.

Starting to heat up in whatcom county seen a a few deer moving around this last week. Wife seen a big drop tine buck on the city limits chasing a doe late this morning. Second time she has seen him. My back yard deer have been harassing one of the does, every where she went the little 3's followed and I got pics of a decent 3 that is looking a little puffy. IMO we are right on time for pre-rut, little guys getting them worked up for the big boys to take. By the end of the month it should be hot and heavy into the first week of Nov. Just hope I can be in the right spot at the right time to take me a toad.

It's starting here in SW WA. My Husband's deer he got yesterday was still scrawny necked but starting to smell and hanging around a doe, same spot he ran across a few other bucks that were really stinky and hanging around does. I've talked to others that have seen them chasing does too. This weekend should prove to be great hunting and produce some good bucks.

I am really surprised I have not seen more Big Blacktail posted .. This could... go down as one of the best seasons I have seen in a long time ..The weather has been deer hunting weather since the opener and now it has rained for 4 days straight I would think there would be a lot more bucks hitting the dirt .... I am patiently waiting for late archery  :archery_smiley:

Most of the bucks that get shot will not get posted on here. I have seen more bucks hit the ground this year than any other since 99.  The weather has been freakin awesome and the rut down low started about a week and a half early.  We have passed on about 10-12 legal bucks(Multi-Season Tag).

About 10 years ago on October 15th I was reading an Outdoor Life article about the WT rut.  What caught my attention was the author stating that older does, primarily those that are going downhill with limited life expectency will actually go into cycle 30 days early.

The next morning, October 16th I watched (and later killed that day) a masher 145" 5x chase and dog a whitetail in unit 124.  Those that know this unit or surrounding units vary rarely see any kind of pre-rut activity until late October / early Nov, let alone chase.  Everytime i look at that buck it reminds me anything can happen at any given time.

Neither did I, but it makes sense given the fact that does of the human variety seem to be raring to go a little more than they did in their 20's.  Can I get an "Amen"? :llam:

Yes, the rut is going to be early this year. Lots of fresh rubs and scrapes around. I truly believe the rut will be in full force around Halloween to the fifth of November. Should be a good late season for those of you with tags still. I'm done with a 17 inch wide, whitetail 4 by 4, 200 lbs. GOOD LUCK my fellow outdoorsman!!!!

I was out most of the day today (6AM - 11AM) then back at (1PM - 6pm.)  Saw 2 legal bucks between 8am -10am both following does. One was a 2X1 with the 1 being a drop tine that came down around his right ear. He was  following close behind a doe.  And a pretty big 3X3 following a doe across the logging road 60' in front of me...completely oblivious. then about 5PM on the way out saw a 2X2 standing on the same road, about 50' from where the 3X3 was. He was solo (that I saw anyway, no doe around) I could have dropped any of these as the farthest shot of the day would have been the 60 footer. I don't need the meat this year as the wife scored a Fallow deer in Sept, so I am trying my butt off to find a wall hanger! :bash:

Migration hasn't hardly happened at all in the Methow.  A few migrating doe showed up this afternoon.  Storming hard in the high country.  There should be a wall of doe in the next day or so and the bucks will probably show up about the opener.  Some critters are rutting hard, some aren't that interested.  About 80%

NE , snuck up within 30 yards to a nice 3(8 pointer). He had no clue I was there. Then the woods erupted !  I thought I spooked a couple elk.....the nice 8 point and I both sat and watched /listened to a buck running a small doe back and forth for about 5 minutes. He ran her within 20 yards of me a couple of times. The smaller buck decided he didn't want to interfere and walked off. Got me pretty excited! Never did get a good look at his headgear but it's right where I seen a monster last year. Buddie found his shed this summer and he was all of 180 last year.

Even though the rut is driven by light, I think weather and cold temps seem to help kick it off or ramp it up.

Lots of activity in 154 this weekend, muleys and whiteys chasing does.  Saw one group of 8 deer bed down in a field. We were looking for whitetail does.  They all looked like muleys but then I realized the buck was a whitetail.  Someone put the sneak on them and when they got up to run I saw that one of the does was a whitetail also.  8deer, 6 mule deer does, a whitetail buck and a whitetail doe all bed down with 15-20 yards of each other.  Weird.

Anyways lots of doe chasing going on and the bucks didn't seem to care about anything but the does.

This will not help most but there is a question that id like answered..
The wife and I were heading home from date night Las night(Spokane valley) and three blocks from the house we have a guy that feeds deer/turkey.. We saw 10+does and a 4x4 about a hundred yards from the house.. He wasn't chasing does but his tongue was hanging out and panting like a hound.. Then he proceeded to rub the neighbors apple tree into splinters.. The question is, why wasn't he on the does? And why were they still with fawns? This buck was swollen and ready but didn't seem like he was all that interested in the doe herd just blocks away..

What does weather have to do w/ animals going into the rut?  I have read posts where people say a coming weather change should help get the deer into rut?  I am heading out for a late blacktail hunt this week and was trying to sound smart around the campfire when I get there   Thanks!

The weather has nothing to do with it. When it gets cold the deer have to be out feeding longer and moving more making them more visible. Lots of hunters mistake this for being the rut. Cold weather certainly helps hunting because of the increased movement but means nothing to the timing.

I live in the 130 GMU (just SW of Spokane) I had a nice 4x4 walk across the road in front of me this morning.  He was bird dogging a group of does (4-5).  I had to stop my pickup as he walked across the road.  At 15 yards he didn't even acknowledge I existed.  I would say the rut is under way around here.  Happy hunting everyone. I can't wait for late muzzy to get here.

I have a bad feeling that the peak of the rut was late last week into last weekend. There was alot of activity in those 4 or 5 days down here in the south sound. Seems like things have quieted down the last few days. Anyone else noticing that? Wondering if the colder weather that hit a week or so ago triggered it a little early?

Videotaped 2 nice bucks chasing a doe last Saturday. I saw 18 deer yesterday and 3 spike/fork horn bucks. Two kids and a lady shot all 3 as they worked does. One was shot at 7:30 one at 2:00 and one at 3:30. This morning we saw a nice buck cruising the jackfirs, went back tonight and saw another buck in the same area. The rut may be winding down but is still on.

Yeah, I was chasing muleys which are stalling in the rut, and whitetails kept running by.  I finally grabbed a set of antlers and banged them together, next thing I know a big one is next to me.  Unfortunately my reflexes are better with a gun than my camera.

Went down the ridge and rattled another one in.   I am kicking myself for not spending more time chasing them instead of trying to get that last minute Muley pic

Hunted unit 124 from Sat. 15th thru Tues. 18th. Around Colbert.  Deer moving around in groups of as many as 15.  some small bucks hanging out with the does and fawns but very little chasing going on, especially the first couple of days.  Saw 30+ deer each day but only one 4 point basket buck which was hanging out with 4 does.  He wasn't showing any signs of wanting to breed.  My 14yo son put a good shot on him and couldn't stop smiling when we walked up on it.  This buck's neck wasn't swollen at all and no stench.  Read other reports of rutting going on in this unit, but sure didn't seem that way where we were.   Saw a lot more bigger bucks during the late hunt last year.  Disappointed at the lack of bucks we saw this year.
