Title: Chukar newbie
Post by: John B on October 23, 2014, 06:53:37 PM: I'm planning on heading out in the morning to chase some chukar around the Wenus area. Never hunted them. Any recommendations on choke/ shot size? My O/U has I/C and M in it now. I was thinking leave those in, but bring along the extra chokes (I/M and Full) just in case. Any advice is appreciated!

Post by: Fishnfowler on October 23, 2014, 10:54:30 PM: The chokes are fine, get some good boots and bring plenty of water. I prefer #6 shot, but 7-1/2 is good too. My favorite chokes for chukar are IC/IM. Splitting the hairs between a degree of choke is irrelevant to me. Better yet is to pattern your gun and know what it throws.

I would expect some long shots. Shot size, 6's. Good luck.

Then from there on out its plan revenge to kill the toughest upland game bird IMHO, just wait till they laugh at you at the top or bottom of the hill opposite of where you are. :chuckle:

But hey it's still a blast and when you kill your first limit of them you know you have done something. :hunter:

Have fun, wear good boots, take lots of water/shells and :mgun: away.

Post by: John B on October 24, 2014, 10:27:43 PM: Thanks guys! Didn't find any chukar today, but there's always next time. I went in at the Umtanum foot bridge in yakima canyon. Hiked up and down a few ridges at different elevations, from what I've read it should have been good chukar habitat. Lots of steep rocky hillsides, cheatgrass (I think) and sage brush. After about 5 hours and probably no more than 3 miles, I went back to the truck and drove south to get after some quail/pheasant. Found one small covey of quail in brush too thick to get a shot off, saw some pheasant that flushed out of range. So all in all, good day! :chuckle:

Haha I have a mediocre dog and brought a couple beers... next time I'll have to bring a bottle of my shine ;)
