Just wondering if you could only pick one rifle for bear, elk, moose, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, small game what would you pick? My personal preference is the 30-06 shooting the .165 grain Hornady Superformance. Can you say LIGHTS OUT. What's your favorite?

Fast twist .243

300 win mag
+1 if I were still a rifle hunter. :archery_smiley:
-
.270 winchester would be my first choice for up close and longer ranges.
45/70 if range was guaranteed less than 300 yards.
-
30-06
-
I'd have to have the good old .30/30

.270 WIN.

7mm Mag.

Really no fun in owning just one,I have SQUIRREL syndrome, .204,(2) .223's(bolt and AR) .243,.270,7MM Rem Mag.I got lucky enough in 93 to draw a Goat tag, used the 7MM on him.Honestly it wasn't enough gun(3 shots in the boilerhouse and he still ran all over the backcountry and turned into a JUMPER!),If I were to do it again(Which will never happen because I found it impossible to cook with any method) The minimum Caliber would be .338 win mag and the shot would be a blow both shoulders out.
-
270 win
-
25-06.....never drew the sheep/mountain goat tag (but would use it for both) and ended up shooting my moose with a 338 but i've never seen any animal die quicker than shot with this round. daughter in law shot a blacktail buck this morning (her first deer) with the wife's 26-06 loaded with 115 gr nosler partitions--her first deer after a full 2 hours of hunting...she shot it back behind the diaphram (basically in the guts) and it flopped over dead within 6 seconds. I've never seen an animal die quicker than when shot with a 26-06. this buck was the only one i've seen move forward after shot with this round....

.165 grain, what is the velocity with that? .875X the speed of light? :chuckle:
I love my 30-06 with 165 grain bullets though. Not sure I would use it for "small" game though.
-
You might still get some 55 grain bullets (accelerators) for the 06 making it a small game gun.
-
I sure do like my .25/06.
I've always been a fan of .25s though.

We played with those back in the 80's (70's?) when they came out, they really blow stuff up, there might be an eyeball or an ear left of a squirrel. :chuckle:

270, deer,elk,bear caribou,moose
-
257 Wby
-
Lokidog, that would be 2930 fps. $43 a box of 20 rounds.
-
My 375 BME. :chuckle: I can't think of anything that it wouldn't put down pretty quick, and it sure beats the 308!

6mm BR, 308, 300 WSM, 338/375 Ruger, 375 BME.
Seriously, at the moment I really like the 358 Winchester in a short barreled carbine for an all round caliber.

I have one of each caliber ever made in the entire world, but right now mine is my Savage Model 16 6.5 Creedmoor with a Nikon 3x9x50.
-
.270 win
-
I've warming up more and more to the .250-3000 as a favorite. 60 grain for small game and up to 117 grain for bigger stuff.
-
If We could really size this up and not get out of bounds, I think the 30 06 is the best gun. Plan on giving my grandson this rifle to do it all.
-
Been a quarter bore fan all my life. But after spending time with the .323 that may be changing!
-
I'm with the OP on this. I love my 30-06 and it also loves 165 gr. boattails. I've killed everything from grouse, to snowshoe hares, hogs, deer, elk and moose with it and never change my load. I'd rather keep my zero than mess with success. It's the gun I have confidence in and it's easy to find bullets and they are usually pretty reasonable.
-
7mm Rem Mag. Followed closely by 30-06.
-

Im with you! My next gun will be one of the 6.5 variants. Thinkin 6.5x284.
-
Im quite fond of the 338win mag, the 35 whelen and the 7x57. But I really love the good ol 30"06.
-
For the game mentioned, and me only hunting deer and elk with an opportunity black bear thrown in and maybe pronghorn and moose someday, I'll stick with what I have and never look back.
280AI with a 150 TTSX. No need for anything more out to 500 yards

7mm Mag

264 Winchester Magnum
-
7mm Mag
Rem mag? SAUM? RUM? Wby mag? LRM? WSM? Are there others with mag at the end? :dunno:
-
30-06 would be my choice
-
Thank you all for your choices. Let me remind you their are no wrong answers here. It's what you are comfortable with. I chose 30-06 because it is a LEGENDARY cartridge. Originally developed to replace the 30-40 krag, the U.S. needed a battle rifle to get out to our troops in massive quantity when we got involved in World War 1. We took the P-14 rifle (British designed) and converted the rifle to take the 30-06 cartridge. This rifle was known as the U.S. caliber 30 model of 1917, otherwise known as a Enfield 30-06 these days. I love the history of the 30-06, as well as the difference in bullet weights you can get for it .55 grain accelerators to .220 grain for animals such as brown bear. My m1917 30-06 sportarized is a real tack driver, and has one of the most robust actions every developed. To me the 30-06 is the most versatile caliber EVER developed, and you can find ammo anywhere in the world your hunting. The "aught-six" has been a workhorse for over 100 years, and still doing it today! I LOVE THE 30-06!!!!!!!!

6.5x284 is on my list too. I know a guy that shoots long distance over here, out to 1100 yards, and he dings the steel more than any of us. He does reload and shoots ALOT, since he owns the range. He's a Savage guy and shoots them straight out of the box...
-
45/70 if range was guaranteed less than 300 yards.
True story bro, that .45/70 puts the hammer down :violent1:
It has to be lobbed in from a distance but that bullet is a freight train. I've got 300 grain bullets with H4198 behind it and that shoots nice and flat.
Good call. I might even switch my answer...

When I shot my goat with my .257 Roberts, it ran maybe 30 yards and dropped dead. My grandfather shot quite a few goats in B.C. with his Bob. It is a documented fact that the caliber possesses magical properties.

.308
you can hunt Elk, Deer, Bear with one rifle!
-
.270 elk bear deer and anything else that wants to step in front of me ;) :chuckle:
-
.17 hmr :chuckle: no one said it had to be center fire
-
Favorite is my 30-06 can hunt any animal on the northern hemisphere can load it down for smaller species or up for the big stuff.. But having only one rifle is like only having one girlfriend becomes very boring rapidly.
Have killed a 395 pound black bear with a 243, and like the effects of the 22-250 for predators, the 300 savage model 99 is versatile for confined areas and is effective for deer, bear sized game. 22LR and Mag will bring down deer.
IMO more important than caliber is shot placement. you can have a 375 H&H mag but if you can't place the shot it is useless

Enough gun is rarely ever the issue with goats. They are slab sided. Going more gun usually works in reverse on these unique critters. Bullet design ends up being the magical factor with goats. More and more guides up north are starting to suggest using the Hornady SST, A-Max or Berger bullets rather than more gun. When using heavy for caliber bullets Boddington has even mentioned breaking the hips with the first shot and then following up with a shot to the chest.
In 1993 or '94 I was at the Bighorn Canyon ranch getting a pig to serve at our wedding. While there a Barnes group was testing some bullet on Catalina goats. Those goats were taking shots like a wishing well taking quarters. Shots were finding their spots and those goats would just not grant the shooters wish! Then later in the day a father brought his son up for his first animal. Shooting a 243 and Winchester Powerpoints the youngster nearly turned his goat inside out with the first well placed shot. Caliber, penetration and magnum velocity had zero advantage over choosing the right bullet for the job.
-
7mm Rem mag...........maybe 6.5 creedmoor in the near future.
-
6.5 x 55 swede.
-
I'll throw another vote in for the 30-06 for a breechloader, and a fast twist (ie., 1-28) tube in .50 cal for a muzzleloader.
-
I really like my 308 win. Shooting Fed Premium 165gr Sierra Game kings.
-
.300 Win Mag
Shortly followed by,
.375 H&H
And the,

Carried a Rem 742 06 for years. IMO you can hunt anything in the lower 48 with it. Then I married up with the GRENDEL and couldn't be happier ;)

300 rum is my go to rifle.

Interesting Radsav,
My situation was 300 yards, couldn't get an inch closer, very good rest,Same elevation, not uphill or downhill, 162 grain speer magtip bullets(I didn't reload them my grandad did and I'm pretty sure they were boattails) propelled by IMR 4831,All three shots in the boilerhouse were in a 3 inch group on entrance and they were stopped in the hide on the backside, animal had a 2inch layer of fat all the way around,He soaked them up like bee stings.Ultra minimum bloodloss, not a drop on his hide.He jumped off a steep chute and traveled across a glacial boulder field. At that point he was 700 yards and sick,I had another rock solid rest to shoot from, torched on off and shot him through the ankle,he hobbled around and I let another one go on a facing dead away shot, hit a tree branch that was just over his back,Let another one go and got him right in the back of the head. With those same shells I flat out laid down mule deer with that never moved an inch. Not a goat expert by any stretch,My Buddy who lives in Alaska shot his last year with a .375 H&H at 50 yards, blew the heart out and the critter ran 75 yards before piling up.His was a young goat,5 inch horns,Mine was a 9 inch Billy that the Taxidermist estimated at 12-15 years old.I've been shooting 175 grain Barnes X bullets for quite a few years now.I have about 100 left that my grandpa loaded up years ago.Really no fun in owning just one,I have SQUIRREL syndrome, .204,(2) .223's(bolt and AR) .243,.270,7MM Rem Mag.I got lucky enough in 93 to draw a Goat tag, used the 7MM on him.Honestly it wasn't enough gun(3 shots in the boilerhouse and he still ran all over the backcountry and turned into a JUMPER!),If I were to do it again(Which will never happen because I found it impossible to cook with any method) The minimum Caliber would be .338 win mag and the shot would be a blow both shoulders out.

It's been my experience that 7mm Mag refers to Remington Magnum, anyone using one of the others typically posts specifics.
I'd be surprised if anyone on this forum read my post and thought I was referring to anything other than the Rem Mag. ;)

338-06
I love mine. Someday I'll kill something other than grouse and rabbits with it :chuckle:
-
30-30, 7wsm and 30-06. My go-to all around gun is still the old 30-30. It knocks down anything it connects with. anything over 150 yards, the 7wsm is the ticket. With Burger Hunting VLDs, it is very accurate and deadly. I currently don't own a 30-06 but, in my opinion, it is the best all around cartridge for availability and effectiveness.
-
270 WSM, no doubt!

I love my new Savage .308 win. Its great got my first buck with it this year and cant be more happy with the performance, ammo availability, and accuracy. Paired up with glass from nikon winning combo :chuckle:

I've never cared to shoot anything much bigger than a 270 or 30-06.
I can tell you though the coolest rifle I ever shot was a Jarrett in 220 Jaybird. What a piece of equipment that was.

7mm-08

300 WSM (but I don't have too much to compare to...30-06, 7mm, 30/30). :archery_smiley:

I love shooting my 7mm Weatherby Magnum loaded with Nosler 175 grn Partitions pushed by 80 grns of H870 at approximately 3000fps. Flat out knocks the monkey crap out of the animal and you. My wife loves shooting her Win .270 with 130 grn partitions pushed by 55 grns of IMR 4350 at 3000 fps. Both will put down deer or elk and anything in between. I say find the one bullet that performs the best in your rifle and then create a load for it.
-
My 3 top calibers that I own are a 6.5 284 300wsm and my 257wby. the 284 being the most accurate
-
.308 hand loaded with Federal Match brass, primer, Varget powder, Hornady 165gn SST.

Pretty much same here, but with 165 Partition or Accubond. It is either that or .270 Win with 150 Partition or Accubond and IMR 4831.
-
Many good offerings anywhere between .277 and .308
-
Mine would either be 375 H&H or a 30 cal of some sort.
-
.243. Love that round.
-
If I only had ONE to pick, the 375 H&H
but then , the 6.5 Swede and 338/06 AI aren't bad either!!
-
I'm old school and I ain't goin anywhere overseas so my 30-06 can take care of business.
-
Until I started archery hunting 4 years ago I used the only high powered rifle I currently own. .243 win model 70. I love it. My grandpa gave it to me when I was 9 and I killed 9 deer with it out to 300 yards with 0 problems. It will be my son's first rifle. Now he is giving me a pre 64 mod 70 30 06. I have a question about this gun if anyone has any experience with one. I will be rifle hunting in Montana and blacktail hunting here on the Westside next year and want to be comfortable out to 500 yards. Will this gun be a good choice for longer range shooting with the right cartridge and scope? Pardon the thread jack :chuckle:
-
Simply put, YES the model 70 is probably one of the best actions ever made, and in the 30-06 cartridge will be good out to 500 yards if you are a proficient with it. It will kill big game animals NO-PROBLEM at 500. I would still recommend that you get within 400 though for overall ethics. A 30-06 will drop 27 inches at 400 yards, and wind drift alone is too much to compensate for most hunters. Get a .165 or a .150 for flatter shooting.
-
300 win mag
Yep, with a Nosler Partition
-
Was my 30-06 but lately I sure have grown fond of my 270 wsm.
