Title: first year tag soup question

first year up in the pac nw and it looks like i wont kill my first blacktail. i kinda figured this year was going to be on a pretty steep learning curve do to the fact that i moved here a month before the season. i saw some awesome country and had a blast. I saw a TON of elk sign and got into areas that were pretty thick (its hard to sneak quietly through the woods when your bumping elk every hundred yards). this might sound like a dumb question to some people but do elk and deer share the same are. if i start seeing elk is it a safe bet to say that deer will be in the same area or should i start looking elsewhere.

Tag soup for dinner. Pretty easy to make.

Ingredients:

All your unfilled tags
6 cups of water
1 Bullion cube
Salt and pepper to taste

First take all your unfilled tags and cut them up into bite sized pieces
Next boil up 6 cups of water.
Once the water comes to a boil add the bullion cube. Stir until it dissolves.
Add your unfilled tags and bring to a rapid boil.
Let simmer for 15 minutes or until the tags are tender.
Add salt and pepper to taste.

Open up a nice bottle of wine and . . .
There you go . . . :D  :chuckle:

Sorry had to. As for your question, yes they inhabit the same areas.

Far too complicated.  Just drink the bottle of wine.

Just like she said.  In western Washington at least, I know of no areas that hold elk and also do not hold blacktail.  The reverse is not true, however.

thanks for the recipe i prefer a more paleo approach and just eat them straight up ;) oh well now on to trying to get my feet wet with the ducks

thanks for the info, ive been on what looks like a game highway a few miles behind the gates and only saw a doe and a fawn, new type of hunting for me just need to keep at it i guess

I've always thought Bitterbrush Tea complements Tag Soup very nicely.

i wouldnt say deer just hang around elk. But i have pictures of both deer and elk in my meadow and hitting the mineral. I have jumped deer that are within 100 yards of elk also. Thats my experience anyways.

Tag soup is to be expected this early in the Washington experience for you.  But count yourself lucky that you've found a good area for elk! :tup:

If you are Modern Firearm, there is a late season, check  the regs, maybe you're not done for yet!!

Four days in November, Thurs - Sun 11/13 to 11/16 in several modern firearm units.

Killed the majority of my biggest bucks during that time.

If i had to choose i would normally trade all of early season for the 4 days of late buck, especially when i was younger and not as experienced, better chance of finding one intoxicated by the stink of a doe....
