One week from tomorrow I will be on my way to a trip I have always dreamed of! Ever since I was a little kid the thought of Alaska has haunted my dreams...but in a good way! Hunting to me is something that has always and will forever remain in my blood. I am sure it's the same for a lot of you out there but hunting is never a question if I'm going to hunt but where. A lot of that passion came about because my dad. He was extremely supportive and always made it available for me growing up. I might miss a few days of work every now and then ;) but I never missed a year of hunting. I have been blessed with the opportunity to go on this adventure with my Dad and 4 of our good friends. Where we will spend 10 days on Kodiak Island on a boat trip, hunting sitka blacktail deer. We have the opportunity to harvest 3 bucks a piece and halibut fish off the boat. I do have to give a BIG thanks to my dad's friend Richard for giving me a chance to go on the trip! Another thank you to my good friend AJ who did a lot of the leg work to get the hunt together and the people! But unfortunately he won't be able to make it now and he will truly be missed on my behalf and the others. I wish you the best of luck AJ on you new work endeavors and your crews should be honored to have you as a boss. Thank you to all and good luck hunt! I will post more when I get back and hopefully have a bunch of good pictures to show.

You going with Kodiak Combos? He's a good guy.
-
We are going with Alaska Coastal Marine
-
Have a great trip that is on my bucket list.
-
You picked a good year to go! My family members that live on the island have been putting some real hogs in the ground! My uncle said they got the first snow at sea level yesterday and the deer are THICK!!👍

Thank you for the report! That's some really good news! Finally got all my stuff packed today now I'm going to have some sleepless night until I leave.
-
They have had three mild winters in a row and that is all that it takes to grow really nice bucks. I grew up there and believe me you will be going back every chance you get to hunt those deer. They are the prettiest blacktail subspecies by far. Hold your last tag for one that will make the book. You should have no problem getting one that will go 100-110 inches this year. Post some pics and have a blast!!!👍

We are heading to the south end of the island and do you think there is a difference between the north and south ends? As far as how many deer and the buck to doe ratio? I'm more than confident that we will all get are bucks just from the reports I have heard. I am really holding out for nice 3 and 4 point bucks if I can. Would you think that is a realistic goal? Another question are the Brown bears still a big problem this tine of year or do they start moving up to the higher ground?
-
If you get the chance to do some fishing uyak bay is full of halibut
-
There usually isn't a big difference from north to south this year. I have friends hunting both ends and the deer are thick on both ends. The Bears are still everywhere and looking for an easy meal. When you shoot a deer we would always put someone in an elevated position to stand bear watch. You will be able to find 3 and four pointers, just don't shoot the first deer that you see. If the weather is good for three or four days you will be able to fill all of your tags easily. Weather, and the Bears are always the biggest problems.
-
Kodiak 907 thank you so much for the info you got me even more pumped up for then hunt! And thank you Bangor Skank for the info about the fishing! We plan on doing a lot of fishing as well so that's good to know.
-
No problem man. Go get em and be safe up there👍
-
By the way kodiak 907 you killed a stud buck this year! I was lucky enough to get one a few years back. I rough scored him at 133" gross and 126" net
-
Here's a nice buck a buddy got this week on the west side of Kodiak. He said there were good numbers of deer everywhere, but the real nice bucks were at 1500 ft and above. Typical for this time of year. Once the rut kicks in good, they will be wherever the does are.
-
Nice buck
-
Hope you have a great trip. Please report back with pics. I have been looking at a similar trip for years and just haven't pulled the trigger. Maybe your update will assist me with making the final decision.
-
Nice buck Sitka_Blacktail that's what I'm looking for! From what the biologist told us we should hit the rut the whole time we are there.
-
Sounds like your set for an awesome adventure.
Keep us posted.
Good luck
-
To those who have hunted deer on the island before during the rut would you suggest using a grunt call and rattling? Or do they not respond to it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
-
Tagging, this is something I've wanted to do for years
-
Spot and Stalk is gonna be your best bet during the rut. The bucks move around a lot looking for does and pushing does. The bucks will respond to a bleet call if you want to get them into bow range. IMO the best bleet call on the island is a piece of beach grass. We would use a blade of grass as the reed of the call between our thumbs. It will make a higher pitched bleet which sounds exactly a sitka doe in estrus.
Also, be careful when calling, if you use a bleet call the bears will respond to it. If you are going to do any calling at all, get a good vantage point like a little knob with SHORT grass or alders and watch all directions. The bears will always respond to a call from the down wind side.
-
I have never had much luck rattling on the island.

-
Thank you for your input! I was on the fence on either or not if I was going to purchase calls. I am for sure going to try to cover as much ground as possible in the window of time we have each day. The boat will only drop us off and pick us up during day light. Thank you
-
Try to do some glassing on each drop off. A lot of times you can sopt deer on the hills from the boat and then go after them.
-
Yup, bleats work good during the rut. And spot and stalk is my favorite way to hunt Sitka's followed closely by still hunting. I use hand carved yellow cedar calls carved by Alex Panalago. They also work on Columbian Blacktails and Whitetails.
Here's a buddy's Afognak 4x5 buck plus eyeguards, taken a few years ago using one of Alex's calls which you can see hanging from his neck. Here's an e-mail address for ordering Alex's calls judie-alex@comcast.net and here's a thread talking about different calls Alaskan hunters like to use. http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/showthread.php/105632-deer-call (http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/showthread.php/105632-deer-call)
-
nice bucks!!
-
Nice buck.
-
Have a great time!! I was fortunate enough to get a nice 3X4 after I shot my bear up there. I am ready to go back. I own a couple of Alex's cedar call's but have yet to call in a blacktail with one. Take lots of pictures.
-
Tag. Bucket list!
-
Here you go cnelk! The bigger deer are starting to show down low👍
-
Good luck. What caliber rifle you taking?
-
Finally here in Kodiak Island! Where breath taking views are around every corner! Alaska is everything I always dreamed of and so much more! We fly out tomorrow morning on a float plane to the most southern side of the island where we get on the boat and start are hunt. Here are a few pictures so far!

I'm back from the south end of the island! It was a fun and crazy trip! Had a blast can't wait to do it again! I will post pictures and more of the story when I get home. This trip was one that I will soon not forget and hope to repeat again in the near future! Kodiak is a place of extreme landscape and weather both of which we battled during are 12 day trip.
When the morning of the day we were all expected to fly out came, to take us all to the south end of the island. We were a group of guy's with nervous energy! Just waiting for the phone call saying that the weather would be good for flying? With all of us packed and ready to fly we finally got the green light around 08:30 and that a van would be ready to pick us up at 09:45 to bring us to are float plane. With another surprise waiting, we were told a film crew was at the dock waiting for us and wanted to tag along and film are journey on the flight! They are a film crew for the outdoor channel filming fly in trips.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2F1d00a469367094d772effe8608c382fa.jpg&hash=a0a5709124c35787999aae2c64ea9dea2cae1aa9)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2Fafca2559d079be620ccd57b0b9428d05.jpg&hash=3c0afb826e33c16c287cf0f77ce6a005e0231ed4)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2F6064fce03eee74c63776773eb3594cbe.jpg&hash=b1b5e0b8d09eee6654fcd390c9a7872f31a5abc6)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2Fd16d2f34ffeaa18aa13cf5870882962b.jpg&hash=6f6099aff7b104bb049ce3973df4f28d2b01addf)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2F6e122ee5d9bfdc2608ef0e9f24d33a52.jpg&hash=5e27ad27f9e3d2405cb5b2efc086ae8a7de64157)

Stop playing with my emotions! We would like to see some bucks!!! When I saw we, I speak for everyone on huntwa!!!
-
Nice trip. Did your pilot happen to be Roland?
-
Sorry for the delay I had to take care of a few things today. So the day we finally got to the boat the weather was really good. But if you haven't been following the weather at all there was a giant typhoon off shore of the Aleutian islands which would really change the weather for entire trip for the worst! Instead of having cold snowy weather we had extremely rainy weather with high constant winds of 40 to 50 knots! We figured that with the rain fall we were getting it was raining anywhere around 1" per 1 hour all day long! All of these photos were taken on the first night on the boat before we got all the bad weather.
-
Dear pictures stat!
-
Did you meet the boat in Alitak bay?
-
On the next day we finally had the chance at a full day to hunt but unfortunately the storm had found its way to us in full force. We reluctantly had to stay confined to the boat. With heavy rain, high winds and low visibility there was little we could have done. Not to mention the questionable ride into the beach for a safe drop off. With all day to look at maps, are group came up with a consensus of where we would all hunt if there was a brake in weather. Which brings me to the next day!
The next morning we got up and are prayers were answered with what we would hope to be a brake in weather for the day. We all got ready for the day and anxiously awaited for daylight to come to get are ride to shore! With what would be are nicest day of are adventure we would make are best of it and that we did! Right away when my wife's uncle and I got dropped off on the beach we worked are way up to the base of one of the mountains, shortly into are trek I spotted a small spike with a doe. After little success finding good bucks we split up and went different directions. I continued my way further inland in hopes of finding a good buck or at least a buck worthy enough to fill one of my two tags I had already purchased. After hiking all day putting on the miles and glassing, I just happened to look below be on the ridge I was on before dropping down and crossing the next. I couldn't believe what I saw before me about 70 yards away! It was a buck that would exceed all my expectations of what I would have hope to have seen on this trip. With the buck standing broadside to me and showing no interest in my presents I took my time to get a steady shot with my bipod and took the shot! He instantly dropped in this tracks and I could finally breathe again! I was truly excited and couldn't wait to put my hands on him. When I worked my way up on him he unfortunately got up and ran his way down into the deep draw in the thick alder! If any of you have ever walked through it all know its not fun at all to do. He had worked his way down to the bottom of the draw and piled up in a river bottom where two rivers turned into one river. Not a very fun place to be when there is big brown bears in the area. So unfortunately I don't have any good field pictures of my buck but here are the few I have!(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2F973a5bdf1741cc60f3f1851546e3f09a.jpg&hash=33f430ccd7ce485a562de4240a3bf6077310fa2e)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2F6ccea2a91f12abd12efbd89f9c9f090a.jpg&hash=0051a3fa310a1f4f9c1a52cf565c2d57c95a4ace)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2F44678402e0eff4dccd11276719fee650.jpg&hash=2b6264736136a94236d5cca4716235327a1fbd1d)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2F6548fa4616884d053d2054f92b4782ff.jpg&hash=43bfcc5848d6c9aa6692b9903c6d401e62841820)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2F3c560b4cb24c0ff1cbc08e9247a52acf.jpg&hash=98fd53c3ea17753cec34f15dc6265a0545928e0e)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftapatalk.imageshack.com%2Fv2%2F14%2F11%2F18%2F264892a06767d853ad93509f37327d6a.jpg&hash=a8bebc45e361b8dd89fcd6661fe05f4a54f6b630)
