today while deer hunting the wife and I came across this bull in the road. He had what looked like a broken left leg and looked very thin.
-
Which Hancock area?
-
bridge gate- kapowsin pass
-
Are you sure you don't mean Hanford?

No it's hancock property.
-
Poor guy, i hope someone could put him out of his misery.

Was supposed to be a joke. I guess I have a lame sense of humor.
-
Sounds and looks like hoof rot...

I saw what you did there, and appreciated it.

Or a broken leg.
-
I would lean more towards hoof rot or something else other than a broken leg. Whatever his problem is it affected his antler growth so he has had the problem quite a while.
-
Might be just broken but he's awfully sick looking... :dunno: Also very similar looking to the elk I shot with hoof rot in 2009.
-
well if a hunter doesn't get him id be surprised if he make the winter without ending up and something meal!! he looks like hes in bad shape and very skinny
-
I would lean more towards a broken leg. The whole leg just looked useless.
-
Probably got run ragged in the rut, lost lots of weight, broke his leg fighting and is now barely hanging on. If the guy that saw the bull saw a broken leg flopping around or something, I'm going with that. Hoof rot is possible, and maybe that's why he wasn't using the leg also I guess...
Was the leg flopping around broken or was he just not using it? Maybe his hoof is rotted off.

Leg was flopping around. Wobbling off on 3 legs he wasn't the quickest elk. Most likely will end up dinner for some predator.

I saw a bull like that a few years ago. I think Josh P. has trail cam pics of it. It's actually the hip. Not a broken leg. I seen it right off the 13 if I'm remembering right.

Sounds like a broken leg to me  Either way, that guy is in some bad shape.

If his antler deformation is due to the broken leg, it would have to be an injury prior to this springs antler growth........

That bulls been up there on the 137 for a few years now. Would be cool sheds to find

His legs broke. It's really amazing he's lasted so long. You can go see him about anytime you want to never leaves that little area he's in

the elk does look gaunt in the first pic....not trying to jack the thread but a few years back i shot a bear up in the Humptulips area that only had 3 legs...his front right leg was gone at basically his/your elbow...he weighed close to 300 pounds...i posted a pic of him on the taxidermy thread...yes he was hobbling but got around just fine and tasted devine
-
Not an area for hoof rot, that would be a disaster on that property.
-
Scott I saw that same bull way back on the 13 about 2 miles before the bridge. He looked to me that his hip was broke.

Yea apparently he doesn't leave the area. And sounds like he's been like this for a few years now.

Sad to say but Hopefully he has a broken hip or leg. Looks like classic hoof rot to me. We see it all the time in southwest WA. Its a serious problem down here and is spreading into new areas every year. I saw a cow yesterday that looked just like that through the body and she wouldn't put any weight on her hind right hoof. Have never seen hoof rot in that area before.
