Really liking the way season is starting out this year!
First check this morning and I got a small sized one and my biggest ever at 56 lbs that might be a super blanket! It had gotten in one of my traps and actually pushed it apart and got out but he went downstream about 75 yards and got into another of my traps and didnt make it out of that one!
-
Nice job, our season doesn't open here until 1 Dec. Can't wait. Good luck!!
-
Knowing you, soups on! :EAT: :stirthepot:

Nice job Jesse

You are correct!
Beaver! ...................its whats for dinner!
-
very nice
-
That's some quality beaver right there.
-
WOW, awesome animal. I'll be checking my first set ever tomorrow!
-
Any beaver is good beaver, well almost!
-
Nice job! How's the beaver taste? How are you cooking it? Or are you BSing :chuckle:
-
I plan to cook some tomorrow. I soaked it in water first for a day to get some of the blood out.
Its pretty good if you butcher it and cook it right. If you spill some of the glands on it though its not worth eating. That taste gets into every part of the meat and you literally have to use it as bait only. Last year my dad took steaks and cubed, floured and fried it and it was awesome!
-
Got my first triple today! :IBCOOL:
I got these at the same spot I got the small one on sunday. Two were 14 lbs and one was 17.
More fur and meat!!!! :EAT:
-
I've never eaten wild beaver what's it taste like? :dunno:

I'm gonna give it a try this year. Nice job on the triple. You might as well start the scoreboard thread :chuckle:

If I remember right I believe it seemed kinda similar to a slightly gamey tasting deer. Plenty edible!

I was just thinking that!

Got this guy in the same spot as the 56 pounder. Not too big but I'll take it!
-
Put any of them up yet? What do they look like? Primeness?
-
I'm probably not the best judge at when their prime or not but the beaver seem nice. I got my first two put up and the other three are skinned and in the freezer til get more time. I'll get the otter done later today
-
The otter is getting me pumped! My personal favorite to trap.
-
Did you extract any beaver from that spot I wanted you to trap last year? I had some dogs get sick and it turns out they've got "Beaver fever",well guess what try as one might, you can't keep dogs from drinking from an available water source.Worst part is it ain't just one,it's the whole works as it spreads out all over in the kennel.I've been medicating for weeks,it's quite tough to get rid of once it gets started this time of year.

First coon of the year! My little trapping buddy came with this morning to help me.
You gotta see her face when I ask her if she wants to go trapping with me today!
-
Ended up getting a smaller beaver in a random spot on the river today. It was a little side stream that had no old sign or activity anywhere nearby. I put the trap there because it seemed like a decent spot to maybe pick up an otter but wasnt expecting a beaver at all.
I ended up fleshing my two raccoons today and they were both very blue! Fur seemed decent but their skin was super thin and hairs were actually coming out the flesh side as I was fleshing it. They were darn good eating though! :chuckle: :EAT:
-
Love that area out there!
-
Yea that 56# is a super blanket for sure. You stretch it yet?
-
I thought it was too. Turned out to be just blanket size.
-
I have had a few traps at one specific dam for the last four days and finally connected today! First check it had sprung the trap and pushed it aside a few feet and repaired his dam in the process. Yesterday it had just pushed the trap aside a little bit and never even sprung it. Today I went to check it and realized my trap was gone! I was kind of pissed at first thinking that someone had actually stole it and then realized it was about 10 feet away in the deeper section with a beav in it! Hard to believe he could "swim" and paddle enough to move it that far. Haven't skinned it yet to see if its a male or female but I weighed it and its 47 pounds. Second biggest I have gotten!
My daughter wanted in a pic so I figured Id set it up for size comparison.
-
Cool picture! My daughter never turns down a photo op :chuckle:

mine too. Nice beaver!
-
cool pic with your sweetie trapping partner. now if you can only get her skinning
-
She's been with me while Ive been skinning and constantly asks if she can do it too. I've thought about just giving her a dull knife and just let her go nuts. Maybe I'll save my next blue coon just for her.
-
that's cool, my daughter is 16 and backs up to her horse trailer, hooks it up and loads 2 horses in it and hauls down the road. whatever guy gets her is gonna have a 100 pound tough gal that can take care of herself. oh ya she is a crack shot
-
Sounds kinda like how I want raise my daughter up to be!
-
Neat photo of your daughter and the catch of the day, proud DAD

Well I haven't done too much trapping the last couple weeks and figured it was time to throw some cages back in the water since my cat trapping was getting to be a big waste of time and money so far. Plus I was getting low on cat bait.
I built a dozen nice cat traps and put them out around the first of December until almost Christmas and all I had was skunks bothering the traps. I know there were cats looking into my traps but getting them to commit to going in is something I'm trying to fix. Anyhow, I'm happy to finally have some fur and more bait. I'm guessing he was probably 30 lbs.
-
Door closed!
-
Sometimes its just nice to get out and play in the water! Great job on them beaver. Cat trapping isn't as easy as some on here make it out to be.
-
That's for sure! I've got a few tactics I'm going to try in the next few weeks to see if I can change the game in favor.
-
Got my first cat of the season. 25 lb male that had lots of fat in his chest and on his hide. Nice to finally get some fur for all the time Ive put in. :IBCOOL:
-
Nice.
-
 congrats!
-
Nice cat Jesse

good looking critters

From what I've learned (and what I've been told) the last few years, seems like its not worth wasting your time going after cats until February. Thats not to say you won't catch a cat early in the season, its just not as probable until the last two months of season. Next year, I'm not going to set any cat sets until February no matter how much cat sign I see.

:chuckle: Funny, I was just thinking today that I need to pull my sets because I never catch anything after January unless it's very cold. WAAAY too warm right now.

It was actually really warm here yesterday, probably close to 60. The day before was in the 50s and rainy most of the day. Maybe cats like the warm weather around here. :dunno:
-
Nice cat foss, glad to see one go in, and shut the door for you . I haven't had any luck with cats, after getting the one.
-
Got this 21 pound male about mile away from the last one on a trap I set two days ago. The belly doesnt have very good color but its still a decent sized cat at least. All my sets are higher elevation areas locally (between 2000 and 2500 feet) and so far, it seems like the cats have a little less red in the hills than they do down in the low lands. It was kind of a theory that had me wondering how much the higher elevation (and thus colder temps) would effect the fur color and thickness which is why all my cat sets are in the hills this year. I would assume that the more gray colored cats are worth more than the really red coastal cats :dunno:
Or maybe I'm just dead wrong with all of that and just overthinking the whole thing. :chuckle: Oh well. At least I'm getting fur (and delicious cat meat)!
-
Nice cat!!

24 lb male about a half mile down the road from where I got the last one. I found some very fresh poop at this spot and figured I'd give it a try. Only took 5 days. I think I'm going to try driving around until I find a fresh scrape and poop and then set there. My last cat was just down the road from fresh cat poop too. Nice!!
-
Very cool, nice looking cat! Picked up another myself today.
-
That is a nice cat!
-
Love the tongue roll! :chuckle:
-
That kinda shows how much she enjoys going trapping with me!
-
I was hoping to get a nice outside end of season "barn shot" of all my hides before they went to auction but it decided to downpour inches Saturday so the living room floor was the best I could do.
Pretty happy how this season went. Learned new tactics, new territory, and got some more traps built for next season. Plus my trapping buddy got to spend quite a few days with on the line that I actually got some fur!
-
Great photo and a great season!
-
I think your stratagem worked as those look like pretty good cats. Especially for west side cats.
Those heavy, dark beaver will bring you a good return. My heavy brown, dark brown beaver at FHA's sale 2 weeks ago averaged $38. Good Luck.
-
I actually sold all my beaver and otter at the ronde last Saturday. Wasn't the best prices but they were sold and I had cash in my pocket that day. The cats and coon I sent to NAFA though. I can't imagine I'll get much for the coon but I'm hopeful I'll get decent prices for a coastal cat. We'll see!
-
Real good season you had!

Nice pic.
