The new Mathews No Cam looks interesting... Anyone going to buy one? I just got a new bow a couple months ago so I have no intentions on one for now but I would like to shoot one.
-
Interesting design and I won't bad mouth the bows without shooting them (I'm a long time Mathews shooter) but "holy ugly stick" batman! I would have to think it would be pretty smooth but they sure aren't getting speeds I would expect from a 6 1/2" BH bow. Until Mathews does something to WOW me I'll keep my Drenalin, Heli'm , hunt with my Energy 32 and will try the Hoyt Matrix G3 I picked up. 5 Years ago I would have never ventured away from Mathews.
-
I think if they really tried they could have made it uglier...but they would have had to of tried REALLY hard :chuckle:
Funny to call it a "No Cam" when it does have a cam just does not look like the typical modern cam. Should be smooth, should be quiet and I like the super short limb. Should be a nice shooter. Though I expect the HTR to be a very slow 330. I'm also very surprised they went without a yoke and a dual power lobe like the Monster cam.
I like how you take 20 year old technology, change the packaging, make a nice video and claim it as "Cutting Edge"!!
-
I like my z7xt, going from a switchback xt. I like the idea of different why I'd kind of like to shoot one although I hope I'm not regretting looking into the energy 32 more. I can't find a bad review on an elite.other than the weight

Either Elite or NoCam would be miles ahead of the Z7 IMO. Heck, The Mission Blaze at around $500 is miles ahead of the Z7 in my opinion! :chuckle:
I still think the Switchback may be the very best bow Mathews has ever made. Though I do really like the newer Chill models.
-
I did like the drenalin. No cam looks interesting ill be shooting one this week.

Drenalin :yike: :yike: My Mathews friends called it the pencil limb explosion factory!

I liked my sb and kind of regretted selling it I was just in the market for "something new" . Happy with my z7, I wanted something a little lighter feeling than my sb.
-
Yeah I heard horror stories about the drenalin. Mathews phased out physics on that design for sure
-
Drenalin was probably the biggest advertising campaign for Hoyt ever. So many Mathews guys I know made the switch to Hoyt during the Drenalin years. Very few ever went back!
-
:chuckle:
Word is the cables are extremely close to the wheels/cams so mathews put a plastic sleeve on the cables to protect them, and that sleeve is rubbing the wheels/cams. Looks like mathews band-aided a flaw in the design. No thanks. I wouldn't buy a first generation like this, it's a good idea to wait until it's proven and the bugs are worked out. :twocents:
-
I believe my dad has an old "no cam" compound bow from about 1983 that I could shoot for free. Plus being 30 years old it still looks better than that new waffle riser :yike: :sry: and it can't be much slower than what Mathews just released
-
Back then we called them eccentrics :chuckle: Maybe "Eccentric" is what Mathews is after :dunno: It is a nice design and I'm sure Mathews will add a couple million dollars worth of syrup to those waffles to help make them more palatable. 330 with 6 5/8" brace puts them right in Hoyts wheelhouse. Don't think my 1980's eccentric bows ever made it past the 240 mark. Although our limbs back then would never have held up to shooting a five grain arrow either!
I think it will be a good bow. Just not sure why it's cam lobe is not a dual with yoke. Maybe they were going for lighter weight and more efficiency for speed than balanced perfection like their Monster/Chill cams. :dunno: I'm looking forward to shooting it. Doubt I will get one, but I do think it will be fun to play with at the shop!

I shot one at Archery World yesterday and they're an amazing bow. The release is dead quiet and there's almost no shock at all. If I thought i could skip two mortgage payments, I'd buy one. Yes, I have a fairly low mortgage payment. The tag on the bow as for $1,099.

If you are going to skip two mortgage payments why not skip a third and get that Ugly Hoyt you've been talking about for five years :chuckle:
Maybe I should go pick one up from Joe today and take it to WI for my Whitetail hunt. If not for my hatred of cross over cable systems I would probably do that. Just not sure I can get my brain to concentrate on the target when I see that visual annoyance! Those first Binary cross overs were so crazy annoying...I've hated crossovers ever since. Even though they did work. I'll see if I can talk myself into one by the time I leave on Sunday ;)

Ive learned to wait a year then find em on ebay or AT for 40% off lol. Bow prices have gotten out of control. I also like getting a years worth of reviews and opinions before buying.

I've learned to shoot a mid-range bow until it disintegrates and they send me a new one for free. It's not sexy, but I learned that when I shoot correctly, they still kill animals. :dunno:

Until Bowtech released the Experience my favorite bows were almost always in that $499 to $699 price range. Even when I got bows for free I usually chose the mid range bows. More often than not they are the easier bows to shoot with the least amount of problems. 350 and 360 sound great, but dead animal pictures make me feel much better than winning an internet wiener measuring contest :tung: PLus I have more money left over to pay those big taxidermy bills :chuckle:
-
There's no question in my mind that Mathews bow should be in my hands. But, after the wife lost her job, mid-range will suffice. After all, I have to save our money for a the prepper chit we need for the flu/ebola season.

Hey my old Jennings, Alpine, Hoyt were all capable of killing animals and some actually did. Like anything else technology changes so fast and everyone wants to keep up with the Johnsons :chuckle: Unfortunately the archery market along with the majority of other hunting related items has taken a gigantic leap and is catered more to the wealthy not us average tax paying americans :chuckle: Now get back to work! There is someone on welfare depending on you!

:yeah: I shoot a $400 Bear. It's killed everything I've cut it loose on the past two years
-
Just shot one yesterday. The only thing I didn't like was the draw cycle and a soft wall and is heavy .And new for this year is a bigger price tag.Dont think I'm a hater I've had many Mathews bows and really regret selling my Switchback xt. In my opinion they were caught and passed 4 years ago and serviving off the name. Kinda sad for Mathews I think they forgot who made them what they were now they even sell them in box stores.Remember when PSE did that.I hope they get it togather.

you've gone mad. I guarantee you mathews ain't buying nobody. Last i heard they were still laying people off.

:yeah:. How'd the naba show go?
NABA show was great! Finally got to leave the booth a little and shoot some of the new bows and see some other cool stuff you and MLB were able to. A lot of potential movements in the industry creating a stir. Next month could be exciting. I seriously can not say anything about Mathews until it comes across The Outdoor Wire. So you guys can guess, but I can not say anything yet. Though I can say Hoyt is not buying them. Would be cool to see how Hoyt could twist a waffle and make it even uglier though :chuckle: :chuckle:
The new Bear Agenda and the new Hoyt Carbon may look close to the same as last year, but both have really improved for 2015. The Hoyt reduction in system torque was crazy compared to last year!
The other thing that jumped out was the PSE HD cam. That new cam is crazy good! I've always thought you could improve a single cam greatly by changing it to a three string system instead of a two string system. PSE not only did it, but did it absolutely right! Been over 20 years since I shot a PSE in the field. That very well may change in 2015! The Source, Decree and Premonition - Stiletto all shot great!
That is the way Mathews should have gone with their No Cam, IMO. No cam lean, no cross-over cable system and no cheap stupid plastic doohickey cable protector.
-
I did shoot and like the pse i shot at the ata show. Only problem was it was 3" to long for me.

I expect all but the kids bows at the ATA were 3" too long for you :chuckle:
Maybe when my bow arrives I'll head up there with your book and some Hippos and you can shoot it. The HD cam does not require a bow press to change draw length. And the Source is adjustable from 25.5 to 31.5". I was going to go Decree, but I just have a hard time having two bows at one time with shorter than 7" of brace height. Personally I'd like to have a 36" A2A with an 8" brace height. But apparently I am the only one

Edit, just read your other post, looks like next month is when the news will come out.

I've never cared so much about a Mathews rumor in my life.

:chuckle: looking forward to the news as well. glad I don't have a horse in that race

Any update on this Rad?
-
I've been watching the outdoor wire every day. Still no word. Figure if it does not come across by end of next week something must have gone sideways. I'll make some calls and see if I can get an update toward the end of next week.

Is that for real? Mathews got bought out?

Bowtech bought them!

A lot of rumors floating around out there. You throw enough rumor poop against the internet and eventually a rumor or two does tend to be correct. I expect we will know the details of which rumor is true very soon.
-
Bowtech bought them!
I've heard that rumor too. That would be too funny to be true, wouldn't it? :chuckle:

With all the wealth development companies and investment this and that coming into the shooting sports over the past decade it's become complicated to track who, why and what. Like the industries very own "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game :chuckle:
-
I heard it is some big company that has been buying up other smaller hunting companies. i heard they bought GoldTip also. I can't remember the name of the parent company
-
1 - Bushnell bought GoldTip.
2 - ATK bought Bushnell.
3 - ATK forms spinoff Vista Outdoors and splits stock.
4 - ATK (NYSE: ATK) and Orbital Sciences (NYSE:ORB) merged to form "Orbital ATK" (NYSE: OA) while Vista stands alone as Vista Outdoor, Inc. (NYSE: VSTO)
5 - Bushnell and GoldTip are now product brands of Vista Outdoors along with Bushnell golf, Federal Premium, CCI, Fusion, Speer, Estate Cartridge, Blazer, Blackhawk, Alliant Power, RCBS, Champion targets, Gunslick Pro, Outers gun-care, Weaver optics, Simmons, Millett, Tasco, Night Optics, Primos, B-Stinger, Bolle', Serengeti, CEBE, Bolle' safety, Butler Creek, Uncle Mike's, Eagle, Hoppe's 9 and Savage Arms.
6 - Savage Arms was purchased separate from Bowtech, Diamond, Stryker, Octane, Waterdog and...wait for it... Kevin Bacon!! :chuckle:
-
I heard it was Rosie O'Donnel :chuckle:
-
I do know there were multiple players trying to get in on the action. Some tried by attempting to create rumors with no foundation. Matt personally reached out and asked them to squelch the talk. So I think most of what guys are hearing is hogwash spread by jealous (or overly optimistic) competition reps. Best idea is to not believe anything until the official press release hits. Nothing is done unless it's officially done. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Matt walks away from even the best of deals if it doesn't feel right to him. Nice to hold all the leverage in your life, isn't it?!

That sounds alot more like what I heard, except the Bacon part, but everything is better with Bacon so maybe he got thrown in to sweeten the pot.
Like you say it is all rumors until the press release. None of it would matter if there was some sort of hunting we could be doing.

That was not a post eluding to anything. Simply one of my goofy attempts to show how the industry is one big "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game. As more and more money is made in archery the less we will see of the good old family business. The days of the Martin's, Sheply's and Jennings all owning 100% of a business are about gone. Sadly we have already seen the Joint Venture/Equity Partnership/Middle Market Investment Firm replace families and long standing private institutions.
It becomes less about the product and the legacy and more about the game every year. One of the reasons I try my best to support good honest people in the industry these days and concern myself less with what bow is "hot" or "not". The Good Ole' Boys of the industry are the exception anymore. And pretty soon it won't take six degrees to find your Kevin Bacons' of the archery world. I've never been a Mathews fan, but I do wish it could stay the way it is. Even though I'm sure Matt is over due for a vacation ;)

So rumor is narrowed down to Vista on AT

No big dispute and arguing? Just a single conclusion! Are you sure you were on Archery Talk?

:chuckle: Yah there was 8 pages of that and the last conclusion came up as Vista but I'm still going to wait for the official word. I still think its Rosie O'Donnell :chuckle:

I had heard last week that Matt was attempting to reach key people asking them to stop the talk. Today D-Rock sent me a copy of a letter from Matt (not sure to whom it was addressed) saying the company was not for sale. Looked genuine enough to me. :dunno: Put the two together and it looks like the potential news has become "No News!". Maybe that is why I was told to wait and watch the Outdoor Wire if and when it happened.
I myself like that Mathews will continue to be a private company. The original news I had gotten didn't make a lot of sense for the well being of Mathews. That is why I mentioned I was "Shocked". Mathews fans should be pleased the news was "Nothing to see here!" Sometimes the best move is no move at all. Even though I am not a big Mathews fan I was glad to hear and see what I did today.

That is a smart move on their part. Now if they would just get rid of that cross over cable atrocity all would be grand in Mathews land!

:yeah: Crossover cable, what the heck?
-
It'll be ok...it will be better than all those who came before...we put a coffee straw on it!!:rolleyes: :bash: :bash:
-
I believe radsav is talking about this little black rubber thing on the cable next to the "wheel".
-
That would be the coffee straw! The cross over system is the same lame attempt to eliminate cam lean as Bowtech attempted to do with their Binary for a few years. Others tried and trashed the idea before it really made it to market.
It basically counter acts the torque applied to power side of the cam by adding almost equal torque to the control side. Similar to what a Yoke would do if you weren't interested in properly fine tuning your yoke.
Unlike a yoke it originates close to the string lobe of the cam. So as it crosses over from the left side of the cam to the right side where the cable guard is it often rubs on the cam if the shot is not perfect or the oscillations are too violent. So, unlike Bowtech, Mathews put the clip on coffee straw there to keep from cutting the cable. No Cam shooters would be wise to carry a couple dozen extra if they plan on hunting outside a blind or in a tree.
Basically it is cheaper than a yoke and WAY cheaper than a Monster Cam. And since it is on a split limb you shouldn't see too many broken limbs. My biggest beef is it clouds the sight picture and annoys me :chuckle:
The NoCam is a great idea that fits well with Mathews history of making smooth to draw and smooth to shoot bows. They just need to finish it the right way...and maybe make it a bit less fugly!
