Title: Winter Weather Gear What do you wear on the cold river
Post by: Diehard0123 on December 17, 2008, 06:57:10 AM
I want to get out on the river for some winter Steelhead action but I need to get some cold weather clothing.  Any Suggestions?  I am looking for something to keep the upper torso and hands/fingers warm.  My Neoprenes keep my lower extremeties warm enough with some thermals and good socks so I am covered there.

neoprenes? lol first switch to breathbale then get some wader liner pants and wool socks.. as far as the top goes,  obviously stay away from cotton, I use under armor base layers  then thermals and a insulated jacket/hoodie.. as far as the hands any glove works well as long as you dont get them wet, neoprene gloves are ok but not as warm, and trust me I need warm.. my circulation is awful in my hands/feet and I freeze....

Ill usaully wear a nike base layer because I get em from the outlet's and there cheap.
A long sleeve tech shirt. (Read anything but cotton)
A cabelas wind shear polar fleece jacket or comparable. Really you dont need "wind shear" with a shell though. But on cold windy days hunting I dont want a noisy shell so the wind membrane is nice. They are warmer overall though so you can get too hot!
Then I cover it with a Cabelas Guide wear jacket.

I have a pair of Simms wind pro micro fleece fingerless gloves. I hate gloves though while fishing. Ive actually found just a thick pair of surg. gloves make it completly bareble. It really helps when its raining and cold.

i wear breathable waders, good long johns and fleece pants under the waders, good heavy smartwool socks, good long johns top, tech shirt, fleece or wool and usually a shorty wader rain jacket raining or not. i also have the simms windstopper fingerless gloves. they are a must have.

We do a ton of snow shoeing, and one thing similar which applies, cold head/cold core = cold hands.  Be sure to top it all off with a warm hat, and possibly another warm core layer like a wool or down vest.... Drop your core temp one degree and your body shuts blood flow to the hands and feet almost immediately, hence the cold hands.

looks like we all have are favorites, but i defenately like lite weight breathable waders over neop.  good waterproof lite weight jacket.  under the waders, some under armour base layer 3.0 and some warm soaks.  maybe if you need more warmth your fleece wader pants my also be worn.  under armour is spendy, but good gear costs $$$.  Go cheap, you'll freeze.  Nice pair of waders is also a + make sure the leg fronts are double layed or sticker bushes and kneeling in river rock for pics and ect. will cost you leaks.  there are several brands to choose from.  you don't have to have the most expensive pair to have warmth and comfort.

Well for bottoms I wear the 400 polar fleece wader pants and the new Cabelas bootfoot guidetech wader. Its a stocking foot wader boot sewed to the waders. Super nice and your feet dont freeze like stocking feet. I quit wear the stocking foot years ago.

I hear ya about UA Klick, I get anything I want from the rep for cost and I still use mostely Nike. Even at cost its more expensive than the Nike outlets. Make no mistake, Nike base gear and there tech clothing is as every bit as good. Polyester blends is what your getting in all of it. Its the logo your paying for.
I will say UA has great "Cold" gear. Nike dosent put as much emphisis on the insulation as they do on the wicking.

I like 400, 600 or 800 polar fleece in the winter. Micro fleece is really good too. Fleeces are the best insulation there is and lowest associated costs.
