Awesome! Rats are where the money is at for trapping this year.

Biggest beaver we've caught in a rat colony trap. He BARELY fit in the door! Guess he had dirty teeth or bad breath. :chuckle:
-
Hmmm.... I wonder what's in my trap!
-
This is a setup we use in a narrow channel tha't about 5' deep. Two double wides stacked with ramps on the bottom one. It's about a split on which cage catches more. In the pic there are 2 rats in the bottom and one in the top.
-
What's going on with the trap in the first picture?

The one with the beaver?

Sorry, The one with the sponge in it?

WHAT??? Are you trying to get those critters to clean their teeth while they're in there? :chuckle:
-
Cant seem to find any rats anywhere.

We figure the pelts will grade better if they are minty fresh! :chuckle:

Set a trap on this bait set today. Bobcat and civet cat both working it. A little worried which one will be in the trap in the morning.
-
Real good!
-
Out standing thread...
Tagging. keep them coming.
-
I will vote for the civet being there first. :puke:
-
Make that 2 votes for the civet.
-
:chuckle: A couple of really experienced trappers voting for civet...... and I fear they'll be right!
-
How do you get the stink off your trap if you get one in there?
-
How do you get the stink off your trap if you get one in there?
Best cat scent there is the smell of skunk! Back when you could actually trap in WA I used to get several of those little guys in my sets before I'd get a cat. Started taking the little spotted guys and putting them around my cubbies. Sure enough they bring in cats!
-
When a civet sprays it is a really powerful draw..........................to more civets. :chuckle: :whoo:
-
I have the pan tension set fairly high so hopefully no civets! Something was chewing on the bait so hopefully it was just a skunk.
-
Picked up 2 mink today to go along with a handful of rats,

Nice, congrats!

Off to a great start again this year! Good work

Picked up 2 mink today to go along with a handful of rats,
Are you just using basic one door colony traps? What do you take into consideration when determining where to set for mink/rats?

Rat runs! I'll try and take some run pics this weekend and post them. Maybe even a video.
-
Cool man Id appreciate that. Hard to find any good solid stuff to learn trapping. Doesnt help that I dont know any trappers!
-
Put out a couple more baits last weekend and both of them had cats on them. Civets too though. Hopefully first cat of the year tomorrow.
Made the mistake of putting all my rat traps in one area I thought for sure would produce. Only got 2 rats 1 mink and a small beav all week. Relocated everything today so I'm hoping we are in the fur BIG tomorrow!

Nice cat

Great bobcat pics  Good luck getting him.

When a civet sprays it is a really powerful draw..........................to more civets. :chuckle: :whoo:
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
So funny. When I was a kid, I no-joke stepped on a civet when I was going to check traps. There was a little bitty one in my cage trap and I STEPPED on another one that was in the brush :yike: I was about ten and I started hollering and puking and the one in the trap starting stinking it up too. Never again :chuckle:
If you don't believe me, I understand. My folks still don't. They say I was messing with a skunk :dunno:
-
When you get a bobcat on a beaver carcass do you remove the carcass and replace it with a baited cage trap, move the rest of the carcass into the cage trap or what? I had a cat feeding on a large beaver carcass at the end of last season and I tied the carcass in the back of the cage. The cat wouldn't go in the cage after that. Not sure what I would have been better off to do. I never used to prebait, but I see the advantages; I just need to get the technique down.
-
I wait until the cat has been feeding for at least three days, put a leg in the trap and remove remaining carcass. But as you are about to see, I'm still learning as well! :chuckle: Stupid cats!
-
Would you just go in already!!!!
-
Stupid cat!!! :chuckle:
-
AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!! :tung:
-
You think he triggered it from the side?
-
That's a fluffy cat
-
You think he triggered it from the side?
I think he bumped it when he tried to squeeze his fat but into the opening, tripping the door. I may need to put a bigger trap there soon. He looks pretty big!
-
I think I see your problem. You should try setting the trap with the door open and see if you have better success. :boxin:
-

Hard to catch him with the door closed for sure. Hopefully it's closed right now..... with him in it!

What a fat cat, can't wait till you catch it!!!!

Great videos. Keep em coming.

Awesome pictures.Good luck.
-

.
Pre baiting is to determine if a cat is in the area , not to fatten em up so they don't fit through the door :chuckle: I would remove the bait as soon as I knew a cat had fed on it. :twocents:
Good luck

How big is that trap?
-
How big is that trap?
I'll have to check but it may be my smallest at 9"Wx18"Tx36"L
But looking at the pic it may be my 10"x19". :dunno: :chuckle:
-
I would think 18 tall would be plenty. I'm finding it hard to understand how the trap is being set off.
-
Well, no sign of the cat the last few days. Thinking of pulling out the cat cages until the snow goes away. Too many hound hunters running cats right now. >:(
-
60 lb beaver and some rats.
-
Last pic is a beaver in one of our muskrat colony traps. 3rd beaver this year in those.
-
That's a pig of a beaver. Seems like your doing pretty good with the mink?
-
Looks like a good day.Nice jod.
-
HUGE beaver!!! That tail has some notches!! Nice mink, awesome!
-
Ya make the boy pack out the 60lb beaver
I'm going to have to get me one of those, boy that is not 60lb beaver. :chuckle:
Nice catch

I don't know what I'd do without my son. That beaver was close to half a mile pack out and all I had to do was say "See ya at the truck." :chuckle:

That is a whopper beav! Congrats

Great job guys! Bet the kid has a soar back :chuckle: You can really tell how big that hog beaver is compared to the others.
-
3nails here are few more for you to trap when you get a chance. Thanks RD
-
Great! Thanks RD. That second pic showing the beaver going into my trap is pretty cool. We'll get after those others this weekend. You should put your cam on video mode!
-
I really need to break down and buy a couple trail cams. You guys take some awesome pictures with them.

Praise God for an awesome night tonight! We target 5 species of furbearers and tonight we hit our first grand slam!!! :IBCOOL:
We only had out 11 traps and tonight we had 3 muskrats, 2 mink, 1 beaver, 1 otter and 1 bobcat. Pretty stoked and thankful to our Creator for a blessed evening. I'll post pics tomorrow night.

that is an awesome night congrats!!!!

Here is our Tuesday night check of 5 different species. We released the cat but it still counts!
-
That was very nice of you to release the poor little puty cat. :chuckle:
But why, fur quality? :dunno:
-
Nice....was the cat small?
-
It was a smallish female. I deer hunt in the area also so I should have whacked her but....
-
Very rarely do the mink scream at us but when they do it always startles us.

Sweet pics. I guess it's time to get some cat sets out.

Nice work ! I need some of that action over here !

How far from home are you setting for cats to be able to check them daily. Whats your bait? And do you just blind aet or do u try to fins sign of cats being around?
-

I can be checking traps under 20 min from the house. I'll find an area I think holds cats and throw out a beaver carcass with a trail cam on it. Once a cat hits it I'll cut off a beav leg and set a trap. No way I'm going to blind set and drive up there hoping a cat stumbles upon it and goes in. Gotta watch the fuel bill.

Makes sense, I was just curious because I dont have alot of beaver to use for bait, anything you can use for an alternative?

Awesome cat, congrats!!
-
Well good news and bad news. Good news is I got a cat in that set. Bad news is it wasn't the cat I was after. I went deeper into my sd card and found out the big guy came in after the other cat was already in the cage!
-
wow that does look like a big cat
-
Keep after him. Can't wait to see photos of him in the trap.
-
So to mix things up for the big tom I tried putting in my largest raccoon trap. It's very large and has caught a bobcat before. The problem is that the door swings down and has to have enough force behind the swing to latch itself. Well twice now the tom felt good about entering but the door must have hit him in the butt and not latched. I've since put the guillotine door trap back so hopefully next time he enters.....
-
Well he came back so that is a good thing!
-
saaaaweeeet
-
Great pics and congrats on all the cool critters! Always look forward to the updates!
-
I've spent about a month and a half so far trying to get this guy. He's going to be a very expensive cat if I finally get him. No way I'm going to sell him!!
-
He looks pretty healthy in the pic, keep at him he will mess up someday.

Do you mostly use foot pan traps for those guys? Would a hanging trigger style trap work, I figure something dangling might deter them from making it all the way inside. :dunno:

Once they're in the trap they're pretty focused on the bait/feathers etc. Cats really aren't that suspicious. They aren't afraid to go into holes and they brush up against things all day long

Perfect, Im not getting any hits on one of my beaver traps so I think Im going to find a spot to try and coax a cat inside. It looks similer to something 3 Nails has photos of above so Ill have to give it a go. Trail cam it and bait it with some beaver.

Unfortunately the cat trips the pan in between video sequences. I'd have liked to have seen his reaction when the door came down on him.
I replaced that trap with a longer one where the pan is deeper in the cage. I also took the carpet out of a cage that I trapped a female in last night that she peed on and put it in the new cage. Sooo.... :dunno:

How far is the pan located inside that trap, I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how those cats are setting off your traps and not getting caught.
-
It's just the one cat. He's giving me fits. I've had him in the trap 5 or 6 times now and he keeps getting lucky! He'll stretch out, trip the pan and back out. He's done this now with 2 different traps and now I have out the third. The first style was Mercers' trap. Then I tried a trap with a swing door which was probably a bad idea. I now have out the largest of the Briarpatch traps which is a lot deeper, with the pan deeper in the cage as well. I'll have to measure the difference in the distance that the pans are into the cage.
-
Looks like he is making it fun for you!
If just walked in and got caught that wouldn't be fun, he is playing cat and trapper which in the end will be a sweet succes for you. :chuckle:
-
Wire the bait to the back of that briarpatch cage and set the pan tension to Hard and that will be the end of this story.
Good luck.

Set a trap on this bait set today. Bobcat and civet cat both working it. A little worried which one will be in the trap in the morning.
After looking at this photo of the civet I got really interested! I didnt think we (or Idaho) had civets. I did as much internet research as I could and all I could dig up was something called a ringtail. But the ringtail looks nothing like what you have pictured here. So I kept digging, then I found something called a marbled polecat, looked similar, but I could still tell it wasnt what I was looking for. After about 30 more minutes of internet sluething I went to the Idaho game regs for fur trapping and noticed a small notation at the bottom of the page
"The coyote, striped skunk, spotted skunk, long-tailed weasel, raccoon and ermine, also considered furbearers, are classified as predatory wildlife and are open to hunting or trapping. "
BANG It hit me, all of you guys are saying how much these "cats" stink so much, maybe they are actually skunks!
Did a quick image search for spotted skunk, narrowed it down even more by searching western spotted skunk and I found this little guy.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2F9%2F98%2FSpilogale_gracilis_amphiala.jpg%2F1200px-Spilogale_gracilis_amphiala.jpg&hash=1de36be2d294c336c5153e11b0709da6f352760f)
Looks like a pretty good match to me, but then again I have never seen the civet cat or spotted skunk in person.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading through and watching all your videos. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to the next trapping season to see how well you do.

Civet cat is another common name for spotted skunks. They are very common in W WA and W OR. They are known to exist widely throughout North America but they are pretty scarce elsewhere.

Good to know! I had no idea there were more than one type of skunk in the first place.

There are four species of skunks in North America. Striped, spotted, hooded and hognosed

The really old timers in OR also called them mountain skunks.
