Title: hello from Buffalo NY !
Post by: birddogdad on November 20, 2014, 09:49:50 AM
my cousin sent me this picture of a whitetail trying to browse this week in Buffalo NY area. I experienced this kind of storm there in the late 70's growing up in the area. The deer migrated as winter conditions get quite harsh. I imagine they will loose a bunch out of this storm...

I lived in the area for many years. These deer are educated toward these conditions. Sherman NY (home) snowfall levels are 218inches annual avg, they are above the Erie lake plain and get this kind of dump most seasons. I remember the deer migrating out of the area mostly and some to the grape fields near the lake between buffalo ny and erie pa . Thousands could be viewed, in the 50 miles of grapes. Stray dogs chasing caused stampedes and totaled vehicles occasionally.... Hopefully the belt of snow wont claim too many critters..

We had so much snow, we could only yard cow manure in piles. Over the years, these mounds became home to flocks of turkeys, maple trees in yard at night and piles by day.

The issue as I see it is overall timing.  It's not like the rut is over and these deer have had a chance to recuperate and lick their wounds.  A January / February dumping is much different than a Nov / Dec blast.  These deer, regardless of georgraphichal area are running great guns right now with food being the last thing on their mind.  Brutal timing.

My brother lives about 20 miles from there and just a dusting - 2". Crazy lake effect. They're expecting another 2-3'.

I lived there til the blizzard of "77", we hunted by Ripley. My cousin has a camp by Brockport, he called the Amish and was told there only 6" after the 1st storm. I don't know how the 2nd storm was, they should be down there now. My buddy from Nam is in Orchard Park said he had 4' and had trouble clearing with a front loader. Next day he had 2 1/2 ' before noon. I'm glad I'm not there.

Only remember the blizzard of 76-77in pictures and a beer mug my dad had. Was to young when I lived there. But here is a picture of his house from yesterday. The bottom of the picture window is 5 feet off the ground.

Thought I would add, his house is 5 blocks from Hamburg Beach South of Buffalo by a few miles.
