Title: Late Season BH45 ...
Post by: BOWHUNTER45 on November 26, 2014, 02:44:33 PM
I just better hang up my bow and leave it there  >:( :bash: :bash: I was so excited to get out hunting this morning ..did not even sleep last night ! Then after all that excitement I was left with disappointment  :'(... I headed up to my usual spot and find the same sign I see every year ..It was just torn up . So I decide I best just sit around awhile and see what happens ..I sit for about 3 1/2 hours and decide to move up the hill a little further ...I get to where I killed a doe last year on the last day and look up the hill in the cedars and  :yike: there he is laying at 25 yrds looking dead at me .. I knock an arrow and he stands up ...He is huge ....I have no shot at all  :bash: :bash: I try to move into a better position and I can not find a hole to put an arrow threw to save my arz ....he turns and walks off  :bash: :bash: last 2 years have been the same story ...See them and no shot ..Plus what is really the issue is that you have to walk up hill to get into this place and 95 % of the time the wind is blowing right at them ..it was raining today and that's why I got so close ...But I had my trailcams out about 1 mile down the road and got numerous bucks on cam but almost everyone seems to be at night  :dunno: I think they are staying layed up until after dark  :bdid: and I just blew my chance ...He was the one  :'( I pulled my cameras so I can put them where he is now ...I will let it calm down a day or 2 and get back in there again ...dang it man ...dang it !

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone  Had another encounter this morning ..Just a huge bodied 2 pt .. I mean literally a huge bodied 2pt .. If I have not killed a truck load of 2 pts already in my life I would have whacked him .. I am still learning more and more about hunting blacktail ..I have some info to share about the 2 pt encounter this morning and it has to do with The Primos Can ...just when I thought I knew it all  :chuckle: :chuckle: Something else seems to surprise me ... I usually roll the can over once or twice and then grunt but I think I discovered something the Primos boys have not told us or just have no idea about it   ..I think I may have to make a short video on what I have learned because I really can not describe it any other way ...this is why I love hunting blacktail with a bow ..The challenge is second to none ..with a rifle I could fill a lot of tags but bowhunting blacktail is something I love to do  The best thing about not killing one is I get to go tomorrow  :chuckle: :chuckle: :brew:

Bh45 I'm excited to hear what you discovered, I have had bt come in a couple of times with the can but  don't have much of a technique. I always like to learn, do tell. Good luck! I'm going out for elk starting tomorrow. Wt

Yes, please share your insight about the can. I too have one and have used it a few times with little success. The PRIMOS CAN that is, had to make that clear as I know how these threads can go wrong real bad.LOL

Still plenty of season to go! I thought for sure my wife was going to tag her first deer today, have had bucks all day long on cam since rifle ended. Sat today from morning till 2:30 and saw 2 does and almost 40 turkeys........... ironic.....

Quick update ...No hunting today ..snow in the hills  :bash: I have to be loyal to our High School Football team ..Headed for the playoffs ...Pretty excited for them ..So back at it tomorrow ..

Questions :
#1 Does a doe make longer bleats when she is in Estrus ?
#2 or are they a series of shorter bleats ?

When you watch the Primos boys on T.V and they are using the CAN they roll it over making a longer whined out sound ...Is this really correct !

Everything i have seen and read about using the can is that they are supposed to be a series of short bleets.  When you draw it out and make it a longer bleet it actually makes an alarm sound.  I always turn the small can over fast.  This year i tried the "longer" can and it made a lot longer bleet.  Every time i would use the can the deer would book it.  It pissed me off.  My wind was perfect and they were walking around in the re-prod.  It happened to 7 deer in 2 days.  I will never use the longer can again.  I stick with the short one and hit it fast.  This was hunting black tail on the peninsula.

:yeah:  Nailed it !!! What I discovered with the New Longer can is that when you are rolling it over do not roll your wrist as far ..Creating a shorter bleat ..Or you can take your finger off of the air hole when you want it stop bleating ..Controlling how long it runs out ..The new longer can sounds much better than the original one.Once you play with it and learn how to use it ...I made a series of 6 continuous bleats the other day and backed up with 2 grunts and just about got run over by a pretty nice 2 pt ...can not wait until tomorrow .. I love calling in deer or doing whatever it takes to be successful ..You do not call one in every time you go but when it does happen there is nothing more satisfying ...Hopefully I can get a good one to come in soon

Shorter bleats are the key (that goes for Whitetail too)

BH45, I expected nothing but  :bash: :bash: :bash: and trail camera pics on your thread   :chuckle:

I think you're the best guide for blacktail who gets the worst luck when YOU'RE hunting

I have heard blacktail doe bleats a few times and most are short, but one time I heard a few longer ones that had more emotion or urgency in them. There were several does and at least one buck. Here is the story with pic.
http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,3590.msg39726.html#msg39726 (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,3590.msg39726.html#msg39726)

When I have called in bt bucks with bleats, they have always been when I did longer or more urgent calls either by rolling the can slower or by blowing higher pitched and drawn out calls.

Doing some online research years ago I found a whitetail estrus sound on an ecall that was a near replica of the blacktail vocalization I heard. They labeled it as something like Extreme Estrus Bleat or something like that, but the description said the sound meant "I am ready, NOW!".

Rolling the can slow is close, but the call below is more realistic and allows you to add more emotion, elongate or shorten the sound and do buck grunts.

Not much of an update other than I have hunted my arz off ..I have seen a couple dandy bucks but they seem to be avoiding death ! After my last encounter I am having doubts if it will happen ..When you have a nice one coming to you on a string and with all conditions in your favor and your knowing this is it and he comes to about 50 yrds and stops and turns right into the brush you have to tell yourself this is BS ! I am beat into the dirt and have turned over about every stump in the county ! I can not do much more except hunt my arz off Sunday and Monday ...I am not giving up because I know when your at the point you do not care IT WILL HAPPEN ....I SURE HOPE THAT STATEMENT WORKS OUT  :dunno:

Today I am off to the STATE CHAPIONSHIP 2a football game ..I always back up my High school Football Team ...Even being Deerless  :yike: GO CUBS !!!     Lynden and Woolley for the state title ...

Got two to respond yesterday with the shorter bleats!  One of them was decent, came in to 20 ft before i saw him, unfortunately behind a tree so no shot :bash:

Well I have not seen much in the last couple days but I am sure I found the reason  :yike: After walking into one of the areas I have been hunting hard I happened to hang a right off an old grade on a well beaten deer path . As I crossed the creek I happened to look down and seen this  :bash: :bash:
LION TRACK ! Everything seems to be running from me  :dunno: :chuckle:

I know you guys are about bored with my late season post but I am here to tell you I have never hunted this hard in years and have not let one arrow fly ...But I seem to be hunting where there is an over abundance of cougars ..I hunted all day yesterday and its like the woods have become extinct of wildlife ...I think I seen one squirrel yesterday  :o  So I head to my last spot of the day and I been wanting to hit a new spot where I have not been all season thinking it may be the spot ...NOT ! I figured I would go and knock on a door and try to get permission to enter the area from a different direction ..I walk up to the door and out comes the owner . I introduced myself and ask if I could hunt his property .. He said yes .. We talk for a few minutes and here comes his wife ..  :yike: I am thinking this hunt is over before it gets started  :dunno: To my surprise she says to me ..John we do not care if you hunt but DO NOT SHOOT MY CATS  :dunno: I ask her why would I shoot your cats ??? She says our Bobcat and Cougar  :yike: She then goes on to tell me that they have had a bobcat and cougar hanging around for months and I do not want you to kill them if you see them ..I ask her why wouldn't you want me to kill the cougar ..She says I love cats and I see no reason to kill them...I think about it for a minute and tell her O.K I will not kill them if I see them ...I did not want her to tell me to beat feet  :dunno: Lucky I kept my mouth shut about the one I killed a few years ago not a mile from her house ! Seems to be a lot more cats than people realize ..I crab my pack and bow and head up the trail . It did not take long before I find evidence that they were serious ....This track measures 4.5 inches across ...This is a Big Tom for sure ...I laid my arrow beside it So you can see how big it is ...The 1st track I found weeks ago was smaller but this one is a Big in ! I wish I could post a big old buck but that has not happened yet ..I have hunted my tail off ..These bucks are most likely alone and in the nastiest crap known to man ..I have a couple days left but I am seriously beat from hiking and covering miles and miles of land ..I have only seen 3 doe in the last 4 times out and I covered a lot of ground ...Just giving it to you the way it goes down ..No T.V show , that's for sure  :chuckle: :chuckle:
