Title: Brant Hunting... if there is a season
Post by: lokidog on November 28, 2014, 08:41:46 AM
So, I got to thinking....  :o

I have purchased the Brant Authorization Card for at least the last nine years, but have yet to go Brant hunting.  I don't mind supporting the Brant Program, hopefully the money actually does something useful, but I am realizing that I really don't have the time/ability to get off the island where I live to do any scouting and probably won't again this winter.

I'll offer up some salmon fishing (pinks next summer seems to be the only ones I can reliably catch), crabbing, or shrimping in trade for a Brant hunting trip this winter.  Unfortunately, it seems that many who Brant hunt also have the ability (boat) to go do these other things on their own as well.

Ditto on Snow Goose hunting.  Thx for looking.

There is a season, well specific days.  Had luck in 2012 and beginning of this year in La Conner until some private hunting club got all the old quality hunt spots.  The Brant migration usually doesn't even hit till Jan.  I won't be here I will be deployed.  I would say anywhere in the sound you should have decent luck.

Brant hunting isn't open in La Conner, so that won't help you.  We had brant coming into our decoys last week, despite not having any brant decoys out.  Been seeing a fair amount around.  We should get the yes or no on the approval the first week of Jan. or based on when they do there count.  You pretty much need a boat to hunt them in Padilla or Samish bay.  Camp Kirby is the only spot they hunt them off of land.

:chuckle:  Samish Bay, Padilla Bay and Willipa Bay are the only spots open in the state if the numbers are met.  I have all the waterfowl regs saved for the last 25 years.  Lets make a little wager here.   :chuckle:

Irish, you'd go down in flames on this bet, however, Brant is also open in Pacific County Jan. 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 18.  I think it is open out there independantly from any counts going on here. Page 7 of the regs.

It sucks because I see Brant all the time out in Rosario Strait (Island/San Juan Counties).

BTW, I'm not looking to hunt it right now, just trying to not be the guy looking for someone to go with the night/week before season.   ;)

I wasn't going to bet him...  I won't ever bet unless I am 100000000000000000% sure

There are also numerous Brant out in front of Everett.  They sit on the sand in front of the Jetty.  See them every year.  If you go farther out you run in to even more.  It's a nice population.  My guess is that it would be very difficult to monitor with all the launch areas.
