Title: always shooting a little left...
Post by: jackelope on September 10, 2007, 03:16:49 PM
topic # 2.
thanks again guys for the pointers.
i've been shooting with an open bow hand, and i have a cobra sidewinder 5 pin sight with a level on it, and i always have to "adjust" it a little to get the level levelled...but i keep shooting left maybe 3" at 40 yards max. i haven't really shot much further than that, but it's not as far left at 30, 20, etc.
is this a torque thing? a sight thing? grip thing? the grip on my reflex bow feels a little small for my hand, but i'm not sure if that makes a difference?

Set your 40 yard pin for dead on and I bet you won't be out of the dot at the closer distances....

General Disarray's recommendation would work, however it is most likely a grip thing, and its simply a very minor torque problem that only puts you out 3" at 40yards.  It may however amplify things when you install the broadheads, if you have not already.  The broadheads will plane more when torqueing the bow with your grip than do your field tips.

Try this, use just your thumb in the belly of your grip, tip your hand up and look at it while reading this, and your fingers and hand should look like a capital "L".  Put the belly of your grip on your thumb, between the web and the last knuckle and nothing else should be touching the grip.  It will feel weird at first, but should solve any torque problems you may be having.   This is my grip for my Bowtech.  Do make sure your shooting with a wrist sling when using this grip, as your bow will hit the ground if done correctly without a sling.  If your not using a sling, and your using this grip I've described and your bow does not hit the ground, then we've discovered your problem and your "grabbing" your bow during the shot and thereby knocking off the arrows flight. ;D

Now all that being said, if you already have your broadheads installed and are getting excellent groups at 40yards, they are just 3" left, then do what General Disarray said, especially if your trying to hunt at this time.  You probably don't want to start changing your grip.  ;)

I'll try that. i'm not hunting with it this year to answer that part of the question, and i do have a wrist sling, although i think it needs to be tighter, that or i just need to learn to rely on it. i'm pretty sure i'm grabbing the bow...i probably need to learn to rely on the sling to catch the bow, paranoid about dropping it. i was kind of thinking the guy(choclab) i got the bow from would have included a lesson with it...
i have adjusted it left, and i still shoot left 90% of the time. i think i need to get my grip fixed, at which point i will end up shooting right due to the earlier adjustments i have made.

Hey Jackelope...

Thank you for the invite from MM.

GT is right on...if your grabbing your bow, your more than likely torquing it a bit. Any bit of torque can move the arrow like your describing. The lifeline on your palm should set on the left edge of the grip for a right handed shooter to minimize torque as well. The less "meat" on the bow the better! :-)

If your bubble has been plumbed correctly and you still have trouble getting it level, you might be able to simply add a side weight to off set your "natural" bow cant. It would take almost a full bubble or more to move it 3" at 40 yards! Some shooters prefer to cant the bow and set the sight bar plumb at that specific angle.

It might also be as simple as moving your rest to the right some in case of an overspined arrow or the bow not being set-up to centershot. Can you list some specs such as draw length, poundage, arrow spine/length, right or left handed, release/fingers, method of tune... ect?

Before messing with your technique during the season try a simple walk back tune. Go to the 40 yard target and step up to 20yards. Shoot your 20yard pin at the dot. Back up to 30 yards and aim w/your 20 yard pin at the same dot... Your arrow will hit lower. Back up to 40 yards and aim again with the 20 yard pin at the same dot...your arrow will hit even lower. You should now have 3 arrows in a vertical line. If your line looks like this / move the rest in until the arrows are in a perfect vertical line.

If you cant get it worked out come on down to the shop or meet me at Kenmore one of these days and we'll will get it flying straight!

i use to do alot of archery shooting until a couple years ago and had the same problem. went to the local bow shop and the Archery tech told me to try the "L" thing. same exact thing as Goldtip recommended. It feels wierd at first but soon youll be doing it all the time. Very good tip..........................

nock point...thanks a lot for the offer and welcome to the site.
everything was set up by bill and ken at the shop. the only thing i've done is to adjust it trying to sight it in...based on what i'm reading, i think it's a grip issue...i'll work on it and get back to everyone.

My brother was having the same problem just a few weeks ago. He would drill the center at the range then would shot left when we where shotting out side at longer ranges. It was driving us crazy. Come to find out it was him anchoring differently behind his ear, not setting the same knuckle. He too is a new at archery as am I, but one thing we have come to learn in how important anchoring exactly the same is. Just some input. I know how aggrivating it can be.
