Title: Fishing guide trips
Post by: ghosthunter on December 03, 2014, 03:16:55 PM
I know nothing about fishing. Zero.

But my step son who is in his 30s loves to fish.

I would like to get him a float trip for Christmas. East or west side. Can be next year.

Any ideas on a good day trip in Washington where success in catching is good?

He is almost blind but sees ok to get around. Cant drive so I will be getting him to and from.
Live in Mount Vernon.

Please only reputable people that you can vouch for.

Good man and hardcore as it gets. Hardcore as in passion about what he does. I've fished with him in the cold nasty and also seen him helping kids in the boat with pinks. He can adapt to the client and is worth a shot. Also, he does guide on Lake Stevns and a koke trip may just be right up your alley. I know you said float trip but with limitations on eye sight a nice lake trip might be a good option.

Not a float but Snake Dancer will get you several species of fish in Hells Canyon.  When other guides have trouble they call these guys.

I've fished with John. He'll put you on fish. Based out of your backyard is a bonus.

I would check with Clancy's on the Cowlitz for Springers or Steelhead.

Bob Ball on the OP.

If you would also consider mooching salmon in the salt (sound)?  Keith Robbins Spottail guide service.

If you want to catch a lot of fish I would look to a trout trip.

One of these two or Phil Stephens.  Phil will make your trip successful and, if your interested, teach you how to do it yourself.  I went with him the other day and we kept 30 coho!  I'd post a pic if I knew how.

For Forks I'd say Mike Z's guide service.

If you want to stay closer to home, John is just up the road from you. Another great guide, and a lot of fun to be in the boat with.

Catch success is a key factor here. I would put a nod in for an ocean trip out of Westport. A bit of a trek, but well worth it for freezer filling. I've done a salmon/rock fish combo and it was only $195 +tip on a party boat.

If he's a bit of a fishing maniac, a tuna trip might also be an option, but they're kind of spendy.

For local in the salt, there's All Star Fishing Charters, All Rivers (also operates in Westport) and Jolly Mon out of Anacortes that are all pretty darn good outfits.

Staying close to home on the Skagit, you can't beat John at John's Guide Service.

I recommend jake wentz of jumpin jakes guide service. I believe his website is jakesfishing.com. hes a personal friend of mine and eats breathes and sleeps fishing. Salmon/ steelhead year round here on the westside. He fishes the hump, satsop, wynoochee, chehalis, cowlitz, lewis, and columbia. He fishes out of a drift boat or jetsled. Very nice guy and great teacher, also reasonable prices. He catches fish when no one else can. Hes always booked way ahead so as far in advance as possible is a good idea.

So many variables at work to choose one guide.  Kinda depends on when you want to go, how far you want to drive, and what you want to catch.  Lots of good guide options listed, but they all have their different specialties and the different basins they fish are better at different times of year.  Also, if you want big numbers of fish versus prize fish, that will also make a difference.  You can have 20+ coho days in the fall, but only catch (hopefully) a couple springers in the spring.  But springers are the big prize.

If I wanted to fish anytime before next summer, no way I would choose a Puget Sound area trip.   I'd pick one of the Peninsula or Cowlitz guides and go steelhead fishing.  Great guides here, but just not enough fish in the PS rivers anymore.  If you can wait til next summer or (even better) the fall, then all sorts of great options.  At that point, just depends on how far you want to drive and whether you want to stick to rivers or do a saltwater trip.

We've used John the last 2 years and I had my boss from TX book with him when he came to town. Has not failed to deliver on a good trip yet.
