Title: Grouse on Whidbey
Post by: npaull on December 05, 2014, 11:26:45 AM
Anyone ever seen a grouse on Whidbey? You'd think it could support ruffies at least. I hunt deer on some land out there but have never seen grouse. Just piqued my curiosity.

No grouse on Whidbey that I've ever seen, but it is very interesting that I have a bunch of mountain quail that live in our back yard & surrounding neighborhood.  I theorize the grouse would require larger or continuous tracts of large forest, and there are way too many predators concentrated in the area, both ground and air to survive.

Yes-in the years past I have seen them largely around the Cornet Bay area.  I have not seen any or any road kill recently though.

i dont know about whidbey because you said you havent ever seen grouse out there, but it sure seems like ever since the possums showed up the grouse population has plummeted

They kill a few (23) according to game harvest reports from 2013. Not many for such a big area.  :twocents:

They may be confusing pigeons for grouse?  I've never personally observed a grouse present on the island dead or alive.

Yea I killed a few deer on the north end and never saw any, but they may be some on the south end in the heavy timber area. Might be killing pheasants and calling them grouse.  :chuckle:
