What is your fav fish to catch? for me its hands down oversize sturgeon! Ive been lucky to fish alot of places for alot of great fish... alaska on the nush for kings, and other rivers for world class rainbows on a fly.... california for huge stripers and largemouth.. my biggest is 14 lbs.. but of all the fish I have ever hooked into nothing is quite like a oversize sturgeon! the way they bite, how the hook set feels, the way they jump! the size!! all of it is as good as it gets for freshwater! not even winter/summer steelhead come close to me.. if you dont feel like death after the battle it wasnta good enough fight IMO... and the big boys work you over and over!! how about you guys? whats your fav fish to hook into?
-
HAvent ever had the chance to fish for real big fish.....not to far from salmon and steelhead fishing but have never done it and not sure why :dunno: but I love fishing for walleye and bass with a few triploid trips in between........the best part is walleye and bass are great to eat!!
-
I got to say fishing the tiny creek near my house for little brook trout is my favorite.
-
thus proving how everyone is diff! I used to fish small creeks whe i was younger, still do sometimes when nothing else is going on! but to me you just cant compare a huge 500+lb fish at the end of your line!!! if you have not experienced it.. you need too!!
-
My favorite "big" fish would be halibut. My biggest is right at 200 lbs. My favorite all around fish is king salmon in the salt or fresh from it. I landed a 60 lber in the Humptulips a few years back that still had lice on it and drug me up and down the river for quite a while.
-
Yeah, I've seen some of those sturgeon, they are prehistoric monsters! The biggest fish
I've ever caught is a 38" steely on the N. fork of the Washougal.
-
I love floating down a river, usually the lower yakima, in the summer in either a float tube or my jet sled. The smallmouth fishing is crazy. Top water, cranks, plastics, they hit them all. And the way smallmouth hit and fight. I love it. But there is something to be said for having a pole in your hand and working the bottom with a shrimp spinner for springers. Hanging onto the rod when they hit is a real kick in the pants
-
My favorite fish to catch is a Chum. They'll tear you up on light/medium gear. My favorite fish to eat is sockeye. I have also caught large Sturgeon, they are very impressive also.
-

thats a great shoug fish, bigger then my biggest on that river! get ahold of me in may ill show you what those big sturg can do to a guy!
-
Freshwater is stealhead and salt is definately lings.
-
Fresh.... steelhead followed closely by the smallmouth
Salt.... tarpon
-
I figured Iceman would have pooped off with tuna or red snapper by now, what gives :chuckle:
-
Small Mouth Bass all the way...especially river caught, a float trip down the John Day River is pretty close to heaven.
Coon
-
bass fishing any day possible and then nights too when weather warms... :IBCOOL:
then stealhead when i get a chance to.
-
I haven't done it in a long time but trolling for salmon with my dad were the best fishing trips ever. Lately it's been fishing in the ponds with my son, I never freshwater fished as a kid so its kinda new to me. I never seem to catch much but its still fun.
-
Nothing quite like a steelhead from a boat. I do love the sturgeon fishing too Hoyt but sturgeon are sooooooo much easier to catch and are seldom lost once hooked. When you finally hook a steelhead your heart rate goes through the roof, your peripheral vision is heightened to the point of 350*, your toes and fingers no longer hurt from the cold, you all of a sudden treat your line like its 2lb test and you get more religious than you have been in the last 10 years. This happens every time to me and I catch my fair share, I bet its multiplied several times over for those that don't hook many.
-
I dont think winter/summer steelhead are really any harder to catch then big sturgeon..... but your right about keeping the fish on after the hook set and fighting them light, although plenty of big sturg spit the hook as well...... I just think a sturg is lik a 500lb mix of steelhead/salmon!
-
I haven't done it in a long time but trolling for salmon with my dad were the best fishing trips ever
so true there... the days of past of area 9 salmon fishing in the summer have been gone for a long time now but those times at first light and the sunsets out at possesion both working on charters and my own boat were some of the best times and treasured memories with family and friends.
-
I enjoy flyfishing for steelhead, and chum, but that sturgeon fishing is pretty addicting, then high mountain cutts are pretty fun too.
-
It's gotta be Steelhead for me hands down! The way I try to explain it to most is "It never gets any less exciting ... My last was everybit as exciting as my very first!" And my first was 34 years ago! now how many other things can you say that about? ... well ok there is one other thing! but that's not fishing!
-
Cutthroat and Steelhead.

We had a little 16 foot fiberglass boat, would get up before dawn fill a thermos with coffee go launch the boat then head out towards point pernell(sp) watching the sun rise drinking coffee all bundled up in wool. We'd then troll off Camano (thats where we lived) I loved fishing it was the one thing I'd jump out of bed for at some crazy hour of the morning. Caught my biggest fish with a lure I'd found on the beach using my dads old trout pole LOL......it was a whopping 8 lb blackmouth, dad gave me fat/split lip with the net when we were landing it :chuckle: :chuckle: that was the best tasting fish ever...... ahhh to be a kid again fishing with my dad
-
Phool you have said a mouthful. I have allways said steel fish is like hunting to me. Then trying to land one once hooked.
Backwards Buck, I too miss fishing area 9, I have never caught a summer run steelhead because of it. Summers where area 9, winters on the Sky and the Pilchuck!
Phool I have never caught a steel from a boat, Have owned a few DBs and 1 sled. have a 16ft DB in the back yard now(Homemade FiberGlass) but allways seem to pull up on shore and fish the hole! LOL
-
Pulling plugs behind the drift boat, in the snow!! Is the funnest thing on the plant to do. One trip we went on down the Kalama river is still and always will be one of my best memories. It was the best and last trip me and a "late" friend went on together. We all limited and the biggest was 29lbs and the smallest was 17 lbs. I lost 2 that day that where in the 30lb range.....sounds like the o'l one that got away story. Great times and many more to come.
-
Always room on my boat FS, I will let you know when we can make another trip. Here is little Bro with a Cowlitz hen.
-
#1 steelhead #2 small mouth. I've never had the privlige of fishin for oversize sturgeon but being a big fat redneck, I allways like a good tussle!lol. maybe someday on the chehais i will get lucky.

There are plenty of guys on this site that will have room on their boats for a fat redneck as long as he brings the beer, me being one of them. I'm sure there will be several "huntwa" trips this summer with mutliple boats going, keep your eyes open for the posts ;)
-
Rufus rainbows on 4 pound test, ultra light spinning rod and a spinner!!! Biggest to date with this set up is just over 17 pounds ;)
-
WELL I'LL BRING BEER AND FOOD FOR A STURGION TRIP AND THE GAS.
never caught one before.. have seen them but never had the pleasure of the pull...
hey teacher heading myself to rufus the 26th and staying over there until the 3rd... should be good.. always is this time of year.
-
I know a good sturgeon guide.. lol
-
Tyee from the salt. Hands down the finest trophy fish with excellent table quality.
-
Winter steel, no question. Summer steel is good too. But the added element of cold/rain/snow, and being less active eaters/biters in winter puts it over the top. Even better, add in the challenge of landing one from the bank, and you're on pins and needles the whole time. Lost ten in a row from the bank one winter...was absolutely killing me, but I've never fished harder or been more focused to get off the schnide!
I also like chinook in the salt, but just don't feel the challenge is nearly as great.
Here's a weather appropriate steel photo from last year....
-
Smallmouth on the John Day River-5o+ day's,Winter Stealhead- anywhere, for all the reasons stated above. But the most exciting fish of all was a 8' sturgeon I caught jigging for Walleye below the John Day dam. With my medium action Fenwick, with 12lb. test line. Took me about 45 min. and chased him for 2 miles down river with my boat. Now that was fun!!!!!
-
That would be fun! its always fun with those fish
-
Coho's with out a doubt, but isn't quite the same here, sorry... So it is on to Sturgeon that are fast becoming my fun fish... of course some springer's and going to give it some go for Steelhead... By the way--- as Huntnphool stated---- Rednecks are always OK on my boat... I'll echo that for my boat too....
-
The most exciting fish to catch is hands down king salmon; however, the most rewarding fish to catch is a limit of nice walleyes because they can be such a challenge.
-
Steelhead on the hoh.Silvers on the carbon with a noodlerod
-

what IYO makes kings the best? for me I have caught id say around 700-1000 myself and boated at least that many in my years in AK and cananda and wa.. my personal best is 51lbs..... they are a great fish, exciting for sure.. but more exciting then a 10ft sturgeon tailwalking behind the boat? not to me...
-
you guys can keep all yer kings and coho's...while i love catching them...the ultimate for me is wild westslope cutthroats on a 7' 3wt. fly rod on dry flies...there's a certain reward to it.
also a big fan of flyrod steelhead, but that can be the biggest challenge on the water so i usually just get frustrated and give up.
;)
-
i like catchin cat fish the best
-
Drift fishing bait for Steelhead is the most exciting...no bobber/strike indicator/training wheels. I like to actually have to feel the bite. I hooked quite a few this summer on bobber/jig, but it definitely isn't as fun as drift fishing.
-
all fishing!! it doesnt matter anytime i can get out.
-

personally I like to catch fish and I do whatever it takes to do that, id say about 90% of the time bobber/jig will outfish bait and is hands down a better way to fish, if the fish are suspending you can get them, if they are holding near the bottom you can get them, if they are tucked under a ledge you got them, with bait you dont have the same odds, and I think its more fun and it takes just as much skill IMO, and if you REALLY want to feel the bite toss a spinner or spoon
-
I like fishing Winter Steelhead. I usually fish eggs while my girlfriend runs a bobber and jig.
-
I carry 3 rods when i go, that way any part of the water I can fish... a spinner rod, drft rod and bobber rod, the water dictates what presentation to use... jig fishing is the most efficient to hook fish for numerous reasons, one of them is time in the water, I dont care how good of a drift fishermen you are we all snag numerous times throughout the day and that takes time from our bait in the water, with a jig you should never snag and thus you are keeping your presentation in the water longer, equalling more fish...... I also like to toss hardware after drifting or bobber fishing, sometimes there is a aggressive fish that really wants to kill something and those id say are the most fun, because the hit is awesome!
-
Boy, thats alot of rods to carry up and down streams. I prefer to re-tie.
-
its not really that bad, but its effective to fish all the steelhead holding water and its always good to use different presentations. sometimes the fish will only want one type of presentation or color..... using all 3 types of gear increases the odds dramatically!
-
It's all fun and I seem to prefer whatever is running at the time. But catching kings (springers or fall chinook) using eggs under a float has to be one of my favorites!
-
that is also my fav way to catch springers! I love fall fish on wobblers
-
Damn there out to be alot of boats that I qualify for with that REDNECK LOL
-
Thanks for the heads up huntinphool, I will certainly keep my eyes open for future trips! When does sturgeon start getting hot?
-
Favorite fish in Washington is Chum, nothing like going out in a canoe and being pulled all around. Out of state i would have to say Catfish, they taste so good!
-
For me its cuttys on a fly deep in the back country.
-
I allready gave my :twocents: but once again ... winter steel all the way!!!

Oh and antlershed call em training wheels if you like but I used to have the same mentality as you once then I learned that I now use what the water in front of me dictates and I catch more fish! These pics were part of a 55 fish three day trip for me and every method was used ... trust me not all water is created equal and you are missing opportunities sticking so much to just drift fishing! A couple more parting shots!

good lookin steel! exactly my point earlier..... fish what the water gives you, not all water is ideal drifting water.. 55 in 3 days thats damn good.. our best was around that in 3 days once on the columbia for summer fish and the clearwater/snake for winter fish
-

Like I said, i've fished with them before. I actually did it quite a bit this summer because it was the only way to fish the particular river. I just don't like doing it. How much skill is in watching your bobber float down the river, and if it goes under, you set the hook. Not trying to take away from Steelies caught that way, I just don't like it.
-
how much skill is involved in drifting bait and feeling the fish hit then setting the hook? its not any harder.... fish bite one of 3 ways drifting.. they hammer it.. thats obvious, they stop the drift.. also obvious, or they hit it lightly.. still a very obvious change from the ticking of the bottom.. the skill with bobber fishing would be mending the line, hitting the right seams with the jig, presenting the jig to the fish at the right depth to get a strike.. basically the same things you are doing drifting, you still have to read the water and present the fish the bait correctly to get a take...
-
I almost forgot.. other skills would be knowing what size leader you need to use dependent on the water conditions, also what size/color jig to use in those situations as well, you make it sound like you just toss a bobber and jig out there and hook fish... not quite that simplistic....
-
Small Mouth Bass all the way...especially river caught, a float trip down the John Day River is pretty close to heaven.
Coon
:yeah:
I haven't caught oversize sturgeon yet, so I have to agree with Coon..........smallmouth are a blast to catch, especially in a river.
-
I also like fishing Omak Lake for them big ol lahotans(sp?) BArbless hook spoons spendin the day out there basically by yourself form dark till dark........we can usually catch 30-40 a day not keeping that many of course but sure is fun on the barbless set up......Biggest so far is a 10 pounder most range around 5-6.....the only downside is that you have to buy a squaw permit! or should I say tribal fishing liscense hahah
-
Kings from the salt and nate steely's from up on the peninsula. :)
MS

I also like fishing Omak Lake for them big ol lahotans(sp?)
What kind of fish is that??? Curious, or is it another nickname found only in WA?
First time listening to folks last year on other sites about which they are catching and where, took me awhile to figure they were talking about the same fish I have fished for previous but with the WA nickname thrown in... :dunno:
-
They are cutthroat trout
-
I'm with you Jackelope. Wild Westslope cuts on a dry fly. Somewhere deep in the Clearwater of Idaho.
Some pretty nice camping as well

Although Coho in the salt are a kick.

Have ya tried the little wood river in Idaho awesome browns
-
Nope Rasbo, haven't tried the Little Wood yet, but my father-in-law fished it last year and we're planning a trip there soon. Next year, I hope to get some time on the Little Wood, Rock Creek, and the Logan in Utah (while visiting family). Of course, my first priority is a few days where that photo was taken. Might hit some other spots in between if I can swing it and still stay married.
-
I love smallmouth bass and shiney bassboats :)

Thats a nice smallie, never really got into them to much, had some great days on the snake/ronde when i was in college when I was bored, but bass are the size of bait!!! lol
-
smallies are fun we have pulled some monsters out of lake samamish but they dont compare to steelhead or remotely close to sturgeon
-
ya any fish is "fun" but My idea of a fish differs from most, I have been lucky to fight as many huge sturgeon as I have.. we used to have 75-100 smallie days in the summer over east... they kill anything you tossed it after them, on light gear it was "fun" just not the same as a 20lb native steelie or a huge sturgeon.. or even a keeper.. I bet a small smallie would be a killer sturg bait....
-
it all depends on the tackle and the presentations used on how the fight is going to be with any game fish.
i do like all kinds of fishing but bass fishing is the one you are constantly casting and searching the cover and trying to figure out their patterns to be consistant day in and day out. that is what makes it challenging and fun..
now steelheading to me is the same deal, you are in search and destroy mode too. :IBCOOL:
not just pole in holder and wait. (which i don't mind that either as long as it produces) :chuckle:
-
Sockeye in Alaska on a small river. We normally go every year. i have tons of fun. Those fish are a kick in the pants to catch and there are so many of them my hands get tired after a day of fishing!
-
Some of you guys are stuck on the size thing :chuckle: I love fishing the backcountry high mountain lakes after Ice off for the beautiful little Montana Black spot cutthroats, and rainbows. Flicking flys or tossing spoons it don't get much better than a weekend with your buddys in the backcountry catching high mountain trout!
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi107.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm292%2Fpetkmj%2Fcraigslist037.jpg&hash=ed5226034561f2c86e94aa7b1003e37629f9d02e)
-
you got the wrong type of pole bearhunter :chuckle:. but my favorite would also have to be those high country lakes and winter steelhead, cant beat those
-
its not just size for me but fight.. those high cascade lakes are fun, I usually go to soda peaks lake in august to camp and fish for native brookies in a float tube! its fun.. flyfishing down here is not the same to me, never been into it much myself but the years I was in alaska on the rivers for trout up there was unreal.... 3 lb rainbows on everycast and they were small....
-
you cant beat a day full of angry 5lb smallies
-
or a day of 10ft 600lb fish!
-
STEELHEAD STEELHEAD STEELHEAD STEELHEAD STEELHEAD STEELHEAD STEELHEAD
-
oh boy they don't get much prettier than that! :)
-
I love me some steelie!! Nice fish, is that a fish that you caught latley?
-
Thats some summer steel
-
Any Fish with a hook in his mouth. Salmon are right up there for me for what I have caught. Never caught a lot of the exotics so I don't know.
-
steelies are fun .. look at those neoprenes.. lol those are awesome! damn hard drive crashed so I dont have any of the others
-
steelies for sure, with out a doubt. Helps me forget about hunting for a few months.
-
all of the following
-
I am a sucker for tossin a BW-29 from the bank and having a cowlitz coho or a NFL coho slam it. We have absolutely killed the coho the last 3-4 years since we started tossin plugs from the bank.
I also love lower columbia river summer steelhead. My 9 year old will agree with the summer steelhead, that may be why i love fishing them so much, because he does.
I have caught so many oversize sturgeon in my life that i have quit fishing them. I will never put a big hog to the stress of the fight again. After a long fight it has been proven that the big hens will not breed that year, they will reabsorb there eggs. Never again. If you do it fine i will not put anybody down for it but the resource needs to be preserved for future generations.
I love fishing for sturgeon, and the new measuring method will be interesting.
-
I guess i can't say never, but i will never again target the big ones.
-
I have to say smallie's are my fav but I like the green ones 2. I have done some sturgeon fishing u are right there is a big difference but BASS fishing is more like huntin. I also like going 70+ mph in a shiny boat
-
Here's a good brown one sorry pic taken on phone!
-
I would say smallies as well. I love bass fishing in general but love the smallies a lot more. Usually less weeds were they live and they fight WAY better then the largemouth. I used to be a bass club member and loved fishing the the bass club tournaments. Good competitive fun but still a good time on the water. I like making that perfect cast to a piece of cover or skipping that tube way up under a dock or getting my spinnerbait slammed as it skims just under the surface. Mmmmm good times!
-
those are some nice bass, from my experiences bass fishing was not really hunting, but I have only done it in ponds and on the snake and some on the C. all of those were places we caught tons of fish, and sturg isnt always easy either, you have to find them alot of days, just like the bass... I wish we could use a small bass for bait, I bet it would be so good...
-
I would have to say that Bass and walleye are my favorites. I've done the sturgeon thing and it's great but pretty much the same thing over and over, although I caught a 10 footer on a reel with no drag (broken) and that was the most fun and blisters i've ever had fighting a fish.
-
big game fish in Cabo it can be boring at times but when it gets exciting it gets EXCITING!!
-
how is bass not the same old thing? top water, carolina rig, crankbait.. 4 lb fish.......
-
If I was going to travel to fish for a go getter and fighter.TARPON would be on the list.. :whoo:
-
Hey Jackall, what model Skeeter do you have? I've got a 200 DX and love it. There is nothing like running 80 mph on the water in a fishing boat. As far as warmwater fish, I will have to agree with smallies. I love fishing Lake Chelan for bronze backs.
-
Tarpon on a fly.... looks awesome
-
Hey Polarbear, I actually have a Ranger 521vx, the skeeter was a friends. I love my ranger though no complaints, the skeeters are great boats also. Chelan smallies are top of the list for sure! That place rocks.
-
Big rainbows, big browns on the fly, OH YA

-
+1 on drifting for steelhead, Wish my hands could take the cold!
-
hey jackall!!!
don't let the skeeter name be in the pic.. ha ha way to ruin a good shot.. :chuckle: :chuckle:
but i know we have to do what we have to do sometimes by running in something that isn't like our rangers.
it kills me to run in my partners triton but you can't argue about the extra money :IBCOOL:
just kidding boss. this is your neighbor just down the road from you...
i love all kinds of fishing but bass fishing is my favorite too.
-
Got to be Native Pig Steelhead, in March/April on the Pennisula, swinging a 4 inch Intruder with a 15 foot 2 hander! Just waitin' for the big PULL!!! Jeez, my hands are getting sweaty just thinking about it!
-

Well..prior to WA I would have said the sharks of coastal GA. I know I know...people hate sharks but thats from a boat...try fishing a live 14 inc bait fish from waste deep water and have it picked up by a 600 lb 12 foot long Blue Shark that picked up the bait 20 yards and one foot deeper than the water your in...thats exciting for all kinds of reasons... then hold on and try to stop a F150 speeding away from you and your trying to stop it with a casting rod and 50lb test... I love it.
Now that Ive done some steel head fishing in WA I can honestly say...Ive been fishing my whole life starting for crappie and blue gill on a stick pole (fresh off the tree...lol...I know I know) to tiny native trout in the ankle deep rivers of NC and TN...to grouper fishing the gulf of mexico... to float fishing for dinner off of deserted Islands off the Northern Coast of greece in the Black Sea...
Some of the very best fishing Ive ever done has been with my great buddy Tmike chasing winter and summer run steelies... I could fish another 1,000 times and never hope to have more fun or do any better than me and Tom have done. Good times that I hope we get to repeat over and over!
these have been posted before but Im in Iraq and thats cutting down on my ability to collect new fishing trip pics...

Tarpon (50 lbs or less), bonefish, snook and smallies on a fly rod. Bonefish are a blast to catch. Nothing like a fish peeling off a 100 yds of backing in less than 10 seconds

looks fun, but there is nothing like a oversize sturgeon ripping out 200+ yrds of line and smoking a reel in 10 sec

I too have been fortunate to be able to fish many places. It is hard to top a Bonefish or a large Alaskan Rainbow in my book. Picking a favorite is tough anyway because I just plain like to fish. My latest favorite is smallmouth at Banks Lake. However the one type of fishing that I think about the most is fishing for summer run steelhead. That is my favorite fish because of the surroundings, the rivers, the fight, and the fish. I can't wait for them to come this year.

My favorite fish is hands down native cuttthroat trout. I like going when all anyone catches is the state stocked rainbows. Cutts taste soooo much better  I also got hooked on Northern Pike in Alaska. Something about them that keeps me wishing that I was fishing

Summer run steelies on the Eloakaman River!(brings me to my knees!) :chuckle: They jump going up stream and turn and jump going down stream OMG. But I haven't done that sence the early 80s.
Now I get the same thril out of fly fishing for trout! I love the fish all day catch and release!
