Title: Altenatives to Invisable Fence Company
Post by: BD1 on December 12, 2014, 12:49:19 PM
I am looking at installing an outdoor invisable style fence. Just had Invisable fence come out for a estimate...$2,300 for in the ground containment of just under an acre (with a discount) or $3,200 for the GPS set up  :o. Does this seem high to you? Second...have any of you had success with a different company/product? I live on a 10 acre fam but just want to keep her closer to th ehouse with a reasonable amount of room to roam.  In the ground may cause problems with driveways and such, but am open to any ideas...or private vendors of Invisable fence that can give a competative price.
Thanks,

Mike

Sounds about right to me.  I looked into the invisible fence for my property.  The terrain is to hilly to work correctly with out gaps in the "fence".
The GPS is my only option for my 20 acres and that's the price range over here in Idaho.
It was just released on the market over here last summer, so hopefully the prices will come down, but think of the labor and money it would take to fence 10 or 20 acres to keep a curious dog contained, and its not that bad.  For 1 acre, just throw up a pet safe hot wire and let the dog hit that once, they wont come near it again!

There was a guy that made his own system.  He use wire/cable and then used small wood stakes to hold the wire up.  Circled the yard, looked like a trip wire.  Then hooked up a drag to the dog's leash, similar to what trappers use.  The dog could walk around the yard, but if it tried to leave the drag would catch the wire and the dog was stopped.

Dogtra sells a pretty good setup that you can install yourself, they want about $250.00 for it (cable will cost extra, but you can buy it at Lowes etc). Sportdog sells one too. Petsafe's stuff works as well and they have a couple of wireless options on top of that.

The key, once you have the wire in the ground and everything running, is to properly train your dog to the fence. If the dog is running through it the training wasn't done right.

IMO you are throwing your money away if you spend $2,300 to have a company come in and do the job for you.

Bingo.   I've done it myself and it is EASY.  The mark-up to have someone come to your property, install a simple wire just under the ground surface, push some 12 inch flags around the perimeter, and then train your dog is WAY OVER THE TOP.  Do it yourself.  Just watch a YouTube video.  For less than $300 you can do it yourself and it doesn't take any special equipment except maybe a shovel or a spade.

 :yeah:

I had a very stubborn dog, but she would stop in her tracks at the line and let the frisbee keep flying if I overthrew the yard.  A few times, the battery on the collar was out and she would run past the line, then she would turn back and stop because she knew the line was there, even when the collar didn't beep.

For going across a driveway you could take a pavement blade and just cut a 1/4 or 3/8" deep groove across it, place the wire and then caulk it in.

Just be careful if you use an e-collar on your dog in the field.  They need to be taught the difference.  I know of two dogs that were almost ruined by a Pro because he didn't understand how to teach the dogs the difference.  Be VERY careful.

I watched the old man teach a shepard and a dobi not to leave the property by just walking them down the property line repeatedly with a leash, and talking to them the whole time. no mater what the situation was, they never left the yard. and no one that wasn't allowed or invited ever came in. no fence. not sure how he did it but he always said all he had to do was tell them.

I would not do that with a more independent, high drive, pointing dog.

I currently have the SportDog brand underground fence system that works great with my 3 pointers. I would definitely recommend it.

:yeah:
The install is pretty easy.
Just follow the training instructions and remember that it is gonna take more than a day or two to complete the training.

10' x 12' kennel. Invisable fences don't work for that stay pit bull that someone dumped at the end of the road.

Or coyotes or any other unwanted predator.

They do make a great extra layer of security behind a chain link or wood fence. Helps keep the dog from digging out, climbing over, or running out when the whole thing falls down in a wind storm. A shocked dog is better than a dead dog.

My Siberian Husky I had in the early 90s figured out within 5 minutes that if he got a running start, the little shock it gave him was worth the freedom to run, LOL

The invisible fence will not stop a determined dog.

I've had great success with the Innotek containment system. I prefer to not bury the wire, as I sometimes need to move the fence, and if it does break it's easy to find and repair. I always buy a heavy duty wire vs. the cheap stuff that comes with the system. It can handle driveway traffic with no problem. You should be able to do a system like this yourself for around $300.
