Title: Best out of box rifle under 1000.00?
Post by: Wingin it on December 21, 2014, 12:37:23 PM
Hey guys and gals, I am looking for opinions and reasons for them. I have already decided on 300 wsm for the cartridge so no need to debate all that. So, if you had 1000 bucks what would you buy and why? Thanks in advance. As a sidenote I am not opposed to having some work done to the rifle but it should still fit into the same budget. Don't take optics into consideration as I have a separate budget for that.

A used kimber. I got my used kimber Montana in 300wsm for well under 1k. But I suppose it would depend on what you were planning on using for

It will be used for open country hunting. Shots in this area range between 200-500 yards. I would like to be able to shoot out to 800 yards or so for fun though!

Another for the Tikka. Tikka T3 lite, great out of the box shooter. Got mine new for 550.00 and scoped is right at 7#

I really see no reason to go with a tikka if you want short action caliber. The kimber is a good recommendation but they can be finicky to get sighted in. I'd look for a rem. model 7

Ha! This should be good. I've shot 300.00 Savage factory rifles that have shot as well as some 2600.00 custom builds I have had done. Both easily under half MOA.

$1000 will buy 75% of the rifles available anymore in one way, shape or form. I you want the best bang for your buck rifle, I'd look hard at Savages. You'd still have half your budget left over. What kind of glass will you put on it?  Don't spend all your money on a rifle then put a $100 scope on it.

This was a lot easier question to answer 10 - 15 years ago.  There are a lot of good options now.   I'd probably look hard at the Savages.

Thinking a little out of the box here, how about a Browning BLR in .300 WSM?  Seems to me it would be as fine a shooting iron as any for hunting.

:yeah: There's several choices in my safe, but I almost always grab a Winchester 70 Featherweight. It is wearing Leupold glass, but I think Vortex or Nikon are viable options. Like usual, buy "on sale".

I've always loved the rem's but their triggers are garbage!  Haven't shot a savage with a good factory trigger either.  Most these factory triggers this days are junk. To heavy, lots of creep, inconsistent. Try a good timmeny or jewel and you'll never want to go back.

The best accurate, out of the box rifle, with zero tweaks, is my Savage Model 16, 6.5 Creedmoor. I shot it at a steel plate, 825 yards and hit the target 2 times. I'm sure your new Savage 300wsm will do the same thing............

I'd hate to upset anyone....... but when I build a rifle I base it on a Remington.....
When I want a rifle to shoot with very minimal fuss, I buy a savage with the accutrigger. I dont care for the accustock though. My Savage 204 is silly accurate. The 7-08 has made me want one of my own...... my son is a lefty.. he shoots it very well.
I wish Tikka made a short action for SA calibers and had less plastic on the bolt head.

If the bbl is smooth, trigger can be worked over, skim bed and free float.. sometimes work is fun.
I have had rifles (factory Rem and Win) couldn't get to shoot, I traded or sold them to someone maybe some what less demanding.
Ive also had a boat paddle stocked and braked 338 Win Ruger that shot bug hole groups.
I sold it cause it was too long for timber crawling.

Buy what point's well, you'll be ok
Rambling...

I was going to say  :yeah: my co-worker has this gun in 300 win and I have seen the targets from it, and it shoots great. they are on the heavy side but the last thing you want in a long range gun is ultra light weight. Both my boys shoot tikka's (270wsm & 300wsm) I will NEVER own a Tikka magnum  :twocents: i have tried hand loading for the tikka's but with their short mag length the closest I can get to the lands is .095, so you can't even fine tune a hand load.

:yeah:

These are my first choice for a dedicated hunting gun. I've never owned or shot a Remington or Savage that cycled as smooth as the newer Ruger Hawkeyes. Plus the new Rugers are proving to shoot extremely well.

If you plan on doing any upgrades like a stock or trigger, then I like the Savages. There just aren't as many options for the Ruger.

that's funny right there!  I was pointing out  that I didn't go by the good rule of thumb.  That scope is sitting on top of a REM 700 sps varmint 26" in a XLR Industry's chasi.

the acu-trigger is pretty good for a factory trigger. But can't even run in the same race as a timmeny.

There's a reason people like their Remington's......

With aftermarket triggers..........

And aftermarket stocks............

And barrel work..............

But you are right:   After all of that, they will run with an out-of-the-box Savage.

correct me if I'm wrong but I don't know of a $400 savage with an acu triger. Maybe the mark2 22lr?
I'm not hating on savage, I just never found a factory trigger (including the acu-tigger) that I like.  I'm sure I'm not alone. An aftermarket trigger will improve any factory rifle.

$599 for a 10T and that's their "tactical" model with the bull barrel, etc.

How much criticisim does the OP wanna get info for a $1000 rifle, which might be the best shooting rifle ever for him. How much do the self-righteous owners, of any $1000 out of the box, wanna be critical of a members question ? I know it's all up to the person who is behind the trigger.

It's Ford/Chevy/Dodge, and it's all been clean.

Having said that, buy the Savage 111 combo for under $500, and outshoot all the Remington's, Winchesters and Rugers.

Lipstick on a pig.......   It's still a Remington.

The good news is, you can send it back to the factory and they'll replace the trigger for free.     :chuckle:

I bought the stainless fluted walnut remington CDL... Just about the nicest under a grand rifle you can get from remington... And I'll tell you, the nicest out of the box rifle for a grand(in production) isn't a remington.

Nope.

And I'm just messing with you.

I've had GREAT luck with Savage 111's (me and 4 kids;  all of the rifles shoot very impressively).

But, I don't have experience with much else, so for me it really is Ford/Chevy/Dodge.

I suspect you have more experience than I do.

I am old and tired, and off to bed so I can wake up and go to work.   Millions of people on welfare are counting on me!

Good night.

Interesting. Seems we have a very divided house between the Tikka and Savage guys.

Browning, Tikka and Savage. Had a great ABolt that was a legit <3/4 MOA rifle with factory ammo, sometimes shooting 1/2 MOA to 400 yards. Appearance and feel aside, never heard of a Tikka that didn't shoot well. Savage makes some ugly rifles, but they shoot well too.

Yes, some of these sub $1000 factory rifles can hang with some custom built $3000 rifles. Benefit of them is you get exactly what you want. Components, accuracy, weight, look, feel, everything. At the end of the day if you just want a rifle that shoots great and gets animals on the ground, no need for a custom (coming from someone who has one).

Cheapest 110 im finding is $691msrp.  Tho the 110BA looks sweet!

$599 for a 10T and that's their "tactical" model with the bull barrel, etc.

The .300 I have was $479 at cabelas and it came with a Nikon scope.

I have a model 10 Bull Barrel myself. It's a tack driver, but it's a 308. That's what I use for long distance shooting out to 850 yards. The package is right at $1300 because of the Surefire brake.

You probably just don't have any experience with a Savage. Not sure why you wouldn't understand otherwise. I'm not anti-Tikka. Savage is indeed a great out of the box shooter at a great price. You can't argue that.

I have the Tikka 300 wsm with a 4.5 - 14 Leupold...makes a nice combo as well.  That being said, I shoot similar groups with my old .280 Remington Mountain Rifle with the same scope.  I have friends that swear by their Savage rifles.  It comes down to what fits you.

the savages are sloppy poorly finished , you can ssee the bullets in the mag with the bolt closed , but they shoot ! they are meat and potato's kinda like a t3 what you buy is what you get . if you want a moa gun then a savage or tika is a good bet . if you want to be able to ad on then cost wise a rem is hard to beat just so many parts . take rem with a timmey trigger and bedding job any day .

Dead is dead..   I say if you can hit a paper plate at a 100 yds off hand, go with it.

I am by far a Rem fan, but now own a Savage axis in .243 that will give a whole lot of my Remmys a run for there money..

I dont care what a rifle looks like, how smooth the action is, stainless, blued...

As long as it accurately puts ordinance on target its good to go..

I find it strange that in topics like this Winchester is hardly ever brought up. I have a model 70 that is an absolute tack driver! Anyway, back to your thoughts and opinions.

I find that odd as well, I have several model 70's myself and never have even come close to considering parting with them.  They really are that good.  I notice there are many Tikka's and Savages that find their way into the classifieds here.  Very interesting.

Go to cabelas or sportsmans that has lotsa shootin irons, finger em, play with em and go from there. That being said I'd buy a model 7 or 700 Remington, throw a Jewell trigger in it and be happy

I know alot of guys will disagree but im a big fan of the browing xbolt and abolt. I own the xbolt in a 7mm rem. Mag and the abolt in the 270 win. I love both of them and they are very accurate with factory ammo but, thats just my  :twocents:. There usually priced between 700 to 800 bucks.

:yeah: I have had my A-bolt II in 325wsm for over eight years and love it! I also had one in 270wsm and only had it a short time but it was a great rifle as well i just prefer cartridges that are larger than .30cal

My X-Bolt in .338wm wouldn't shoot worth a damn with any bullet/powder, so I got rid of it. My wife's X-Bolt in 300wsm shoots consistent cloverleafs with 200gr accubonds and a max load of 7828ssc. She's gonna have some pink accented camo done to the stock, probably so I'll quit taking it on my hunts lol

Most all manufacturer's these days are putting out rifles that can flat out shoot well.  If it was me though, I would narrow my options down to rifles that are made in the good ol' USA.  Lets keep our dollars at home.   This is me riding off on my high horse  :chuckle:>>>>> :llam:

I bought my savage 110 brand new with a mounted scope and accutrigger for $385 in 2009. After putting on a better scope (Leopold VX1), adding a comb raiser (I personally need these on all my guns), and finding the ammo it likes (federal trophy copper) it shoots sub .5 MOA from the bench.

So with that, I think a $300 savage 110 ( bit more if you want stainless steel or other options), then spend the rest on glass and ammo.
