But it's on it's way and it's pretty, and big (as in .458 Win Mag.). It also comes in handy just case I ever go to Africa...lol. :chuckle:
-
That is hurting my shoulder just looking at it. Nice looking gun
-
That is big, hope you find something to use it on.
My wallet hurts just thinking of buying ammo.
And congrats to your orthopedist on his future vacation after rebuilding your shoulder.
-
Looks great!
I'm the same, just had to have one and I never shoot it.
Which model 70 is that? It looks like a classic express with a super grade butt pad.
-
I have a .450 Ackley reamer if you want to spice it up a little :chuckle:
And I recommend Dr Winston Warme at UW for any future shoulder issues...... He did a great job on mine :chuckle:
-
You guys are too funny. :chuckle:

It's one of the new FN (South Carolina Model 70's)....Cabelas Ltd. Edition Model 70 Super Grade...2011 I believe. I have a few FN's and love em.

I was looking at 470ne's a few years back but then I came to my senses as I don't see Africa in my 10 year plan. :chuckle: Oh but I sure love the big bores.
I have a friend that used a 458 win to hunt elk with on west side for years. He's a little older now and figured to give his shoulder a break so he switched to a 375 hh. :chuckle:

A group of us were near Las Vegas, shooting at a dry lake. One of the guys brought his .458 Win. Mag. and enough ammo that anybody who dared, could fire it once. This is a very short video of a buddy of mine who tried it. He is 6'4" and 280+ lbs. He kinda hammed it up a bit, but the recoil speaks for itself.

You could just stand behind a stubborn mule who likes to kick. :chuckle:
Would've been close to the same experience. :chuckle: :chuckle:

Someone is overcompensating I think. :chuckle:

"OK, now shoulders back and be sure to put most of your weight on your back leg" :chuckle:

With a shooting form like that. A .300 Win mag would have probably resulted in the same rearward step.
A .450 Ackley or .450 Ultra would have flat leveled the guy. :chuckle:

I bet you spend a fortune on pillows for padding and ice. mike w

Recoil aside, that is a beautiful rifle. Nice!

375 makes for an outstanding elk rifle! Hell i even used mine on a mule deer this year!

:) :) I am sorry but this sounds like BULL to me. .458 does not kick bad at all. I like em. 375HH does not kick either. I have shot many 308s, 7mmmags that kicked much more and more painful. 308 in a Savage 99 is a bad kicking gun, 458 in a normal bolt is just a push.
My normal bag game, deer, elk gun is a 300WM has been for 30 years, my custom 300 kicks less than most 06's. My brothers 30-378 is not a big kicker either.
I like the 458 I think you are gonna like it, the stock looks beautiful. I bet you can load reduced loads for fun. There used to be a gunsmith on Pacific in Tacoma, McCanns I think. He built M1 Garands in 458 win mag. I got to shoot one at Tacoma sportsmans range once.
Good luck and report back!!!

Now a M1 in .458 is just cool. 8)

I had a Ruger #1 in .458 years ago. It was a fun gun! I never did kill anything larger than a squirrel with it, but it did make for some fun when guys at the squirrel spot weren't expecting it :chuckle: I was surprised that it wasn't more snappy in recoil. Would definitely set you back a little, but not at all the brain scramble the 378Wby or even the 325 Kimber is. I think you will enjoy it

Should be fun for some jungle hunting. Don't let them scare you too much about recoil, be lucky if you can pack more than 75 grains of powder. Plenty of bottlenecks in smaller caliber that can add 50% or more in powder.
-
I've only shot one once, 5 rounds. Can't remember the make, but I do remember it had a decelerator pad on it. Was not much different than a .50 muzzleloader with a maxiball and 100g of Pyrodex, or a hot saboted 12 gauge slug. Definitely not as sharp as I expected.
-
I remember reading that the .458 Win with a 400 grain bullet had the same fp of recoil as a 2.75" 12 gauge hunting load and about 30% more recoil speed. Sounds about right from what I remember shooting it. I don't remember ever shooting a 500 grain bullet. So not sure how much increase that makes. Should be about 20%, I would think :dunno: Don't think it is any where near as bad as a 3.5" 12g

Thanks for the input.....looks like I won't need the UW shoulder doctor after all........ :chuckle:

I have one of these myself, hated it for years until I finally decided to get a brake for it. most brakes will HALF felt recoil.. now I can shoot the max loads withtout it shaking my eyes loose or my shoulder black n blue.. a lot like a turkey load in shotgun...
-
I dont shoot the kickers from a low bench anymore. I'll setup on the hood of my truck, this seems to help maintain retina position :dunno:

Yep, McCann was around for years, I think he died a few years ago, not sure if anyone is still building them or not.
But cool is exactly what those are.

Good tip! More upright when shooting the big bores seems to help take the recoil as well as reduce scope eye.
If using the hood of the truck make sure you remember the scope is above the bore :chuckle: I've seen more than one guide truck with grooves and holes in the hood :yike:

There was an auction about a year ago and we ended up with a few small things. His wife was trying to sell some of the patents, but I don't know if his .458 project was included.

Years ago I "Powder Burned" the hood of mom's newer Wagoneer. Lucky for me it was never mentioned cause it never really polished out.
A friend put 3 7RM rounds through the box of his truck...... it happens :chuckle:

Thinking about putting a Nikon Monarch African 1.1-4X24MM 30MM Tube #4 German Illuminated Red and Green Scope on it. Any thoughts on this type of scope. Pretty compact and has illuminated green or red dot if wanted in low light. Stock picture and one of the scope on a Remington.......
-
Looks good.
The faster big bores are the scope killers.
Lighted reticle equals dark timber Elk and Black bear hidey holes.
Gun maker D'arcy Echols decided that the 458 Lott was too much to scope IFRC
-
That scope would be a good choice, I shot a Burris straight 2.75x on a Ruger No1 Tropical I had in .458 Win Mag. From a low bench with a max charge of powder behind a 500gr bullet. You knew when the trigger broke. ;)

Low bench (owch)

...............as my ex-girlfriend would say, nice wood. :chuckle:

I have always liked the 458's. I just about bought a 458 lott the other day. One wholesaler had them on clearance. After just finishing my 7stw project and 30-378 the bank account is a little sore :chuckle:
You will have a lot of fun with the big bore stuff. My buddy had a 585 built and he just needs to get a stock for it. Then we are going to have some fun with it.
-
One of the better squirrel guns ever made!
-
Beautiful rifle! Don't worry about the recoil. Once you learn to roll with it, it's really not that bad.
I had an Interarms 458 Win Mag that weighed about 8.5# scoped for a while. We called it "crash" because the recoil was like a minor car wreck every time you shot it. I loved that gun. :chuckle: The only bullet it shot well was the discontinued 400gr Barnes X bullet. It would put 3 of them into about 1.25" at 100 yards with the 4x scope. When I ran out of the bullets I sold the gun. Now I have the 458 Arnold (essentially a 458 Lott) to take it's place. The Arnold does have a muzzle brake on it though. I must be getting soft. :chuckle:

Managed to snag a used Nikon Monarch African 1.1-4X24MM 30MM Tube Illuminated Scope yesterday for about half of what they originally sold for ($879). They are also discontinued so the next best option was used. Felt pretty lucky to find one, let alone the illuminated 30 mm model. All the reviews are excellent. Should have it by next week. Going to be a nice setup.

You have wanted a bigbore but don't know why????
I'll tell you why....
Because they are AWESOME!!!
The classic scope for a bigbore is the Leopold vxIII 1.5-5x20.

I picked up a VX6 1-6x24 for my 450dakota. It is unreal. The depths of field is astonishing. I can see the front sight on the end of the barrel in full focus while also focused beyond 100 yards. The fov is also amazing with most of the 100 yard target line in the scope at Kenmore. Highly recommend this one!

Enjoy your rifle. The recoil on a 458win is very manageable. And shooting an '06 will be a cakewalk.
-
I missed that you already found a scope, sorry about that! you will like the monarch.
Great wood furniture on that gun!
-
I would argue unless you cant see thru the open sights, you really don't need a scope. these have limited range, well within the open sight ability. Brush, quick shots, any angle, perfect! I shoot cast, FMJ and even "plinker" rounds that my nephew used to shoo at targets before I put on a brake. Great addition to your gunsafe!

Dang near identical trajectory to the 30-30 Winchester.
-
I wanted one for years as well, finally broke down a couple years ago and bought the .458 lott.Have shot it about 20 times now,you feel the recoil but not so much I dont like to shoot it.Very glad I bought that safe queen. Ammo is at a heavy price though.
-
I built a 458 on a mauser action would have chosen a different caliber but the action was already opened up for belted mag. cases. I call it a 49-90 belted express. they make a great cast bullet rifle for a fun low recoil rifle. you might try a few cast bullets.

Loaded up with some of the 350gr bullets at over 2500 fps (very doable!) it would make a great 200 yard elk gun. The trajectory is better than people think if you move away from the round nose bullets. I have my 458 Arnold sited in at 150 yards with the 450gr TSX. 300 yard hits aren't tough at all with a slight hold over.

agree, 200 yds is fine open sights, as if I said, you can see well enough to use them...

Great feedback, thanks guys.
Funny...had a friend (member here) ask me today what the heck I was doing buying an Elephant gun. I finally figured it out. I told him it was because I had watched too many Steward Granger movies as a kid.... :chuckle:
-
.458 is a little small for a Steward Granger gun, isn't it? :chuckle:
