Title: good clean ammo for ducks
Post by: 300winmag on December 27, 2014, 04:09:35 PM
We have been shooting Winchester expert steel and it seems to leave a lot of unburnt powder .They seem to get the job done but it been 20 yrs since I have hunted birds and the steel shoots a lot different than lead did.

dont shoot black cloud then. The name is so fitting, its literally the dirtiest load I have ever used in my life. And its not worth the extra dough. Kent FastSteel works good for me and doesnt seem too dirty.

Haven't heard of winchester fast steel just kent fast steel. I shoot winchester Xperts and they seem to burn fairly clean.

Im confused by your question, you shoot winchester fast steel, but havent hunted in 20 years. Hmmmm, never heard of winchester fast steel, like goosegetter said they burn just fine, use them the most of any brand. Work great.

Most shotgun loads today burn very clean. That being said, I've been shooting mostly Kent Faststeel for years with good results and great patterns.

Blue box federals  are kinda dirty but they kill ducks well, so that means I have to clean my benelli like twice a season, I can live with that. Kents are good shells too.

I shoot a lot of Winchester and have never seen unburnt powder.  All steel is dirty when compared to lead loads, some is dirty than others but Winchester is one of the cleanest.  I suspect you are seeing burnt residue.  It’s normal, just clean it out.

Lead is the sh*! But Kent shells are always crimped evenly and are the cleanest burning shells out there on the market today. Iv tried everything eles and always went back to Kents

i clean my guns after every trip.  never have to worry about gunk building up that way, and i can shoot the cheapest shells i can find.  SOP for most saltwater hunters, at least i hope.

I shudder to think what a saltwater shotgun would look like if it didn't get cleaned after every outing..........unless its really greased......and even then......its going to attract dirt like a magnet.........so.........<shudder>

Most shotguns aren't made for the salt. Very few are made of black chrome, chromed lined barrels, and stainless steel everything. Most guns aren't built to last these days anyways, just like everything else.

Buy a Benelli and you won't worry about what you feed it!

If I hunt the saltwater I put my bolt and trigger group through my ultrasonic cleaner.

I shoot Winchester Super X.
Had a few squib loads with the Kent fast steel.
Black Cloud really messed up my gun.
Win Super X are 12.50 a box at Wally world.

I have had two Winchester squib loads and two boxes that the brass was not the correct dimension and would get stuck in the barrel.

Finally found a load that could gum up the Benelli.  Rio steel shot.  Has a unique smell to the powder burn as well.  Leaves a flat carbon build up in the gun.  Dirty as heck.  I think with the really fast shells despite what load you shoot, you will find unburned powder.  I have ran the gauntlet of shells through my guns.  Some of the finer grains of powder used seem to burn out our leave less residual behind.  The larger grain powder like Kent and Winchester use always seem to be found afterwards in the gun upon cleaning.  Slower shell, might provide a better burn possibly, but not sure.  Speed seem to kill better with the steel, so I will keep shooting those.  Above 1,650 fps, things seem to start breaking on the guns if you shoot enough of them.
