Why in the world are they so scarce?! I have been to every sporting goods store in Walla Walla Milton Freewater and Hermiston. Nobody has them. Should I just order a new Nipple for my CVA Elkhorn and run No. 11's?

Yes.
-
I haven't had any issues finding them. Even sold some to other members here.
But I am westside. I keep both nipples in my gear stash, and use whichever I need. BUT, I do prefer the muskets
-
Check with Sabotloader. He will provide information that the right #11 cap is better than a musket cap. They burn hotter and fit tighter.

I would go with the #11's all day versus the Musket cap. Just make sure you get #11 MAGNUM caps or the RWS 1075+ caps and a good nipple. One that the caps fit on tightly. Also then get a Traditions brass capper - excellent capper for installing #11 caps.

How do the no.11's work with pellets?
-
Love my musket caps and they are readily available. Find them and buy 300 or more....then you won't ever have worry about hem for a long time.
-
On my elkhorn it looks like the bolt face has an "extracter". do I have to change anything there when I switch the nipple?
-
They dont have the bronze one in the thread i need but i ordered 4 nipples for my muzzy
-
I just switched to musket caps after using #11's for many years. So far I like them better, since they seem quite a bit hotter. I haven't had trouble finding them on the west side. Like Jrebel, I stock up on caps when I see them.
-
I've never had an issue picking them up at 49 degrees.. But that is all the way up in Omak.

:yeah: I've Been finding RWS 1081 musket caps at Bi-Mart, I would never go back to #11's!!
-
R&H and Sportsman's in Tri-Cities both had them yesterday when I was in there.
-
First season I hunted Musket caps two fell/came off. Number 11's for me.

Did you have a musket nipple? Did you crimp the flanges? Mine have never fallen off but I crimp my flanges so it holds the nipe better when hunting.
-
McCredy's in Goldendale, call first. I buy mine there and have never found him out of stock, yet. Now I have probably jinxed him.

I never get misfires with musket caps. and if you pinch them, they cling just fine.
-
If you get up to Spokane; the White Elephant stores on Sprague or Division normally have musket caps behind the counter…ASK.

Just get RWS 11s and you don't need to pinch anythimg. :twocents:

I have wanted to do a video, in the dark, of all the various caps to see which has the best/most/hottest flame.
I was thinking of being in a dark room with video from the side
I have a old Remington ML barrel I could cut off, but think I need to find an action with hammer to make it legit. Don't know if hitting the cap with a hammer would be the same as shooting?
If I get this set up, donations of several caps of different brands would make it interesting.
I have the RWS muskets and # 11. Probably some others, but they would be old.
Anyone have a video camera that could do video to play back in slo mo, want to help?
I was thinking of a background screen with a grid in inches to use as a scale.
For the record, I like musket caps. I have NEVER had a musket cap fall off. I have had "no fire" if I didn't get the cap fully seated before trying to shoot. And I do have to use a tool to get them off the nipple before putting rifle back into truck after hunting.

Sabotloader has posted several threads on this topic. The magnum #11 caps burn as hot as a musket cap. "Most flame" would need to be measured at the flash hole side of the nipple, not the firing pin side since they both have the same sized flash holes.

Not only that when you pinch a cap it is no longer concentric and it will not fit the nipple correctly. An since it is not concentric you provide a water channel along the nipple to the charge in the cap. Another reason I like #11 mags or better yet RWS1075+, when you put them on the correct nipple and expand the convolutions they are virtually rain and snow proof.
-

No, you do not need to do anything to the bolt of the rifle. The extractor is for use with 209 primers. I used to have an Elkhorn and shot #11 Magnums with it with success. I popped the extractor off of my bolt because pieces of the spent caps would get caught in it then could block the firing pin on a subsequent shot. I had the best luck with the CVA Perfect Nipple you can order these through CVA.

You don't pinch the cap...you pinch two of the flanges. It does not change the how concentric the cap is, it just allows the flanges to hold the nipple a little better. I have never had water or snow in my musket cap nipples and the year I shot my cow elk, it snowed, rained and sleeted on us every day. I have never been so wet and cold in my life. Hunted 6 days and on day 6 the gun went bang (having never changed my load). Water is more a factor for people that don't protect their nipples and handle the gun appropriately. :twocents:

OK! I finally got a few new nipples for my gun, I got 6 packs of the Dynamit Nobel caps from Ranch and Home and went and burned some powder yesterday :) now waiting on my williams peep to get here and I can get to sighting her in.

Best caps made in my opinion!! Glad you found some.
-
Yeah I liked them when I was borrowing my grandpas gun. I gave what I didnt shoot to him when I gave his gun back. At least I knew where to get the caps. I got the nipples at griggs. I've got some spares coming via UPS ground sometime this week.
-
Rws caps the ones made in Germany ?

Yes they are... Really called Dynamit Nobel caps

Who carries them do u have a idea I know shipping they charge quite a bit extra .....

Yes.. Didn't reallize you needed to crimp a musket cap? Now I really wouldn't trust them... :) So I miss the first shot, moster bull headed up the ridge. I gotta load up and run up the hill to get the next shot and I gotta worry about crimping the dang thing! LOL :) I might give them a try again. Really I might! :)

Ranch and Home and Bi-Mart have had them.

I came to that conclusion about 8 years ago and went back to no 11's wont shoot muskets again
-
Does anyone know were I can get the dynamite noble musket caps in Snohomish or Skagit county ? Thanx all
-
Skagit Arms had them in December. They had plenty in stock... 1081's. If you get some there, please pm me. I need a few more boxes.
-
Ok SP no problem I will probably head there tomorrow thank you

you can mod musket nipples to hold just as tight. I like muskets because they are easier to handle when reloading.

You can modify them to hold tight - but are they water proof? and I certainly agree with the larger size they are easier to handle if you are loading with your fingers. I prefer to use a capper to place and press the cap on the post - but that is just a personal preference.

Not waterproof 100% but I've never had trouble with them firing in the rain.

Confidence... that is really all that matters
-
:chuckle: I don't know about that. What I should have also said is that I have had trouble with 11's going igniting powder before. I don't shoot/experiment anywhere near as much as you do, I shoot cheap muzzleloaders too :yike:
-
Im tellin ya, its not the #11 caps but the low grade black powder sub powders you guys try using. Add poor weather and it just makes it worse.
Get real Goex black powder and you'll be in heaven. If you dont want to pay the hazmat fee, then dont complain about misfires. That hazmat fee is cheap when you compare all the $$$ involved getting a hunt put together just for your rifle to go POP.
As for waterproofing #11 or musket caps, a drop of lacquer inside the cap will do the job.
-
Well, I am not complaining, I use musket caps and don't have misfires. Thanks though

But were they #11's just regular number #11's or were they the #11 MAG caps or even better and hotter are the RWS 1075+ Dynamint Noble caps...
There is a big temp difference between regular #11's and the hotter MAGS

Yeah I probably wasn't using the Magnums. Biggest thing for me is having a simple possibles bag and using muskets allows me to not use a capper/decapper.

Me too, been shooting musket caps on my disc extreme with no issues. I have never had one fall off either. I also don't know what all this talk about crimping is, I just push mine on hard with one finger and its there to stay :dunno:.
-
Smoke pole this is the nipple that came with the gun
-
Looks like a musket nipple. You should be able to fit that with any Traditions nipple. At least on mine I could. On my Optima, the nipple is part of the breech plug, so I have to use musket caps. I think I like them better anyway. Haven't had a misfire yet.
-
So you think I am ok with the noble caps with that nipple ??? I am lost loll
-
just picked up 3 tins of the musket caps stocked up now last me awhile they fit the nipple great  hey mark :hello:

How do the no.11's work with pellets?
Sorry I midded this one ...
DONT DO IT!!! or I should say only if you still shoot the old Pyrodex with the starter strip. 777 pelletts dont have the starter strip and if you look close on the packaging the small print says "Not recomended for No.11 percussion"
