Kick's or Patternmaster

Kick's or Patternmaster

These are the main two that I use as well.  I do have some Carlson chokes on a few of my duck guns as well, but they are only shot on occasion.

Shoffy, are you trolling with a barbless hooks? "I'm looking to get a little more range for pass shooting", the skybuster haters should be all over this.......maybe change the bait line a little and see what you gut hook. :chuckle:

:dunno:yeah I don't know what you call it then ... sitting in a blind over frozen corn field water (no other choice) with standing full bodies and can't get the ducks to commit because of the ice ... all the shots were what I would call "long range pass shooting" .. they were coming in to take a closer look on a pass, but once they saw the ice they changed their mind ... I feel like if I would have had one of those performance full chokes I could have taken a few more pokes that what I did ... Truth be known I'm a upland guy that only duck hunts occasionally ...

I like Carson's in my benelli but have heard good things about patternmaster, but.they are double the money.

Screw a Briley Light Modified into that Benelli and shoot them over the decoys.

I’ve got Briley’s, Pattern Masters, Carlson’s you name it, I just use a Truelock IC in my Beretta. If I anticipate longer shots I’ll use heaver shot like 3 ½ #2’s, I normally shoot #4’s.   :twocents:

What are you shooting now? I think the factory mod in the m2 is a great all purpose choke.

Pattern Master is what I have used in my old Remington SP10 and my 12 gauge.

Best thing to do is pattern your gun to see what gives you the best pattern not all guns will pattern the same choke good. I use Carlson and kicks

Here's a little FYI from Patternmaster as to how their chokes are different: https://www.patternmaster.com/about/ (https://www.patternmaster.com/about/)

Trulock. Mod for longer shots and Skt for feet down over the decoys. I use on SBE and Browning Gold. Shoot mostly Kent Fasteel #2 and some Federal 2's.

I use whatever choke it is that has been stuck in the end if my barrel for the last 30 years. Probably factory Remington choke. This year averageing 17 birds per box (25ct) of #4's. Doesn't hurt at all for someone to try and get better results but, gadgets alone won't do it. Most of the time I will not take a low percentage shot (due to my knowledge of my own shooting weaknesses) but sometimes I just can't help it or didn't recognize what started out as a good percentage opportunity drifted into a low percentage opportunity shot. LOT's of variables in the world of waterfowling!! Happy hunting.

WTF is that suppose to mean?? "Learn to hunt"?? The 3 of us shot 18 ducks before noon in less than ideal conditions. I'm not complaining, but like all things I strive to improve

Right now I'm using the factory mod in the m2 shooting mostly cheap Federal and Winchester #2's and some #3's. I'm an experienced shotgunner and the gun does have a 26" barrel. Before I get blasted about it should be a 28" or 30" I've always liked a 26" better.
I am going to experiment with other ammo as well.
I understand all the variables in hunting and that gadgets aren't always the answer. I'm addicted to trying new gear and techniques is my problem!!

Thank you all for the helpful information and suggestions.. Probably going with the kicks

Huh, I shoot either federals or kents out of my m2 with a mod and I don't really have any complaints about it on shots to 50 yards.

It means exactly what it says.

If you have to sky bust to kill birds your doing it wrong. I like a patternmaster for dense patterns. I don't use it as a crutch,on days I have trouble finishing birds.

Anyone can be a shooter.

It's a new gun that I never even patterned before I used in the field. In fact I never even took it to the clay range. It's been fired probably less than 50 times now
My other gun is a Benelli Ultra Light and I'm pretty deadly with it on pheasant, chukar and quail.

I picked up the blackout extended range about a month ago and have been dropping birds I would Never even think about pulling the trigger on with my factory choke. I am also getting a lot less cripples.

Exactly why the Patternmaster choke is the choice of many waterfowlers out there.

Nice.

Now you resort to name calling.

Eventually you will figure it out until then, shoot tall, shoot often.

I like a little upfront name calling rather than snag, passive aggressive comments toward someone whom you have no clue of their hunting habits.

First post tells me all I need to know...... Why bother pass shooting, the fun is fooling the birds. Bringing them in close. Anybody can pass shoot.

What do you think we were trying to do?? Of course I would rather bring them closer ... But the friggin' field was solid ice .. Had no other options than that spot .. We were getting them in but I'm sorry I couldnt get them to land on the tip of my barrel .. And there were alot of passes we didnt take pokes at ..
In my opinion it takes good shooting skills to make those long range shots.. Take that last comment just how it sounds .. To each is thier own

I agree that decoying birds is fun but, pass shooting and jump shooting has their place as well. Just two different approaches to hunting ducks.

Thank you!

I'm strangely ok with jump shooting.

I'm just tired of finding wounded birds because jack wagons shout tall.

pass shooting is not the only reason your finding cripples, some guys just aren't good shots and cripple off a lot of ducks, even those in the decoys! And hell yes everybody wants to shoot them feet down in the blocks but does that happen with every single duck you kill? Pass shooting has its place and if the birds give me a pass or two within range but aren't going to commit, I'm taking them. I don't care how good of a caller or how good of a spread you have, the fact is when hunting pressured public land some birds just will not come in. If you are hunting private lands or clubs that rarely get hunted then I could see the possibility. But seriously man this holier than thou attitude is ridiculous, I'll agree skybusting can ruin a guys hunt, but there is a difference between than and effectively pass shooting.

I guess it's just different for me because when I have to get up at 2 in the morning to get the spot and put in my time and pay the money in gas I am killing that bird on the last pass if they aren't coming in. Worked too hard to let them get away.

I still get up at 2am. Still hunt public land. I do have some private, and a club. At Sauvie it's common for me to show up at 9am the day before. The time I slept in line we shot 3 mallard drakes for 4 guys..

I like to sleep in, show up just at shooting hours or a little later, do a little pass shooting, and then head home to watch the game.

You and me would get along great in the duck blind .. Same story, when I get up at 3 in the morning and drive 2hrs to get to my spot I'm shooting that bird on the last pass too.
And God forbid if a cripple happens to fly off and land in the next field, the 5 bald eagles up in the tree will be thanking me for a free meal

I was in Sportco just the other day and was looking at all the aftermarket choke tubes so I thought this was a good question and was interested to see what different peoples opinions would be. I find it interesting that a simple question turns into an ethical discussion on hunting.

I have learned unless you are in the "blind" (used generically) experiencing their situation it is very difficult to judge what they do or do not do.

Although I am new to this site, I have been member of other forums in the past. Not trying to start or finish anything just an observation.

Has anyone tried or heard anything about the drake killer choke? The guy makes them specifically for your gun from measurements you give him. When I get my new gun ibwas thinking of ordering one.
