Title: Mod for hoyts fixed roller guard
Post by: Jellymon on January 07, 2015, 04:03:49 PM: I've always loved my vector turbo but didn't like how much torque was present with that fixed roller. Looking from behind my bow the pins looked to be 1/4-5/16" left of the string/arrow and I had a lot of pre lean in my upper cam. An arrow on the left side of my cam ended up about 1/4" past my nock point. It tuned very well but was touchy because I had to adjust my grip slightly counter clockwise to get it perfect. Tiny grip differences gave me slight left/right misses. 6" brace AND fixed roller, bad for forgiveness.

Well I found a cable slide mod from Ray Knight on archerytalk. It came in the mail 2 days after ordering. Fit and finish is perfect, it looks like it came on the bow from the factory. I installed it, took the serving off where the slide would be, and put a standard hoyt slide on. 5 twists in the control and two out of the buss and it was timed, and I lost 1.5 lbs and 1/8" draw length. One turn in the limb bolts and poundage was back up, ATA and brace stayed the same. Speed stayed within 3fps through chrono. Without adjusting the yokes the arrow on the side of my cam was now about 1/8" past my nock point, already less.

After going outside and shooting the arrows were impacting 5" right at 20yds. This shows how much torque the fixed rollers have. Adjusted my sight and shot a bare shaft and it hit 2" left. Took a half twist out of left yoke and added one to the right. I then shot broadheads and field points at 60yds. BH ended up about 2-3" left and low of FP. This was the first time I've ever had BH hit left of FP with this bow. One half twist to the right yoke and small adjustment up on the rest and BH/FP were together at 60, and bare shafts were straight in with fletched at 20. The draw felt smoother and I wasn't getting nearly as many unexplained left/rights. I was also able to use a completely neutral grip, no more pressure on the left side of the grip to tune. The arrow on the side of my cam now crosses directly through my nock point, rest at slightly under 13/16 centershot, and my pins are much closer to my string/arrow from behind, less than 1/8" left. So there is still a little torque present, which is normal for a non shoot through system, but a lot less.

Overall my bow feels and shoots much better and to me was well worth the price. I want to thank ray knight for making these available and getting my bow shooting how it should from the factory. I also want to thank him for saving me $1000. I was going to buy a nitrum because of the flex guard but now I don't see the point. I like the 35" ATA of the vector anyway. It almost feels like I just got a 2015 model! Pics are the sight before and after sighting in/tuning with the new slide. Also arrow on left side of cam to show the lean I put in it.

Also, there is nothing really "wrong" with hoyts fixed rollers. They can tune very well and are still very accurate. But their only real benefit is slightly less cable wear and a very small speed gain, usually less than 5fps. I will take less torque, more forgiveness, a more stable inline platform, and smoother draw over those "benefits" any day. :tup:

Other than the cable gaurd issue i think the vector, spyder and faktor are better bows. It looks alot alike the cable slide that hoyt put on their 2015 target bows.

Post by: blackveltbowhunter on January 19, 2015, 05:10:27 PM: Hadn't seen this post before, I did the same thing this past summer to my Maxxis 35 and LOVE it. In addition to eliminating some torque, it eliminated some "clicking" noise that had developed with the roller guard on my particular setup.

Post by: RadSav on January 23, 2015, 04:09:59 PM: Replace that standard Hoyt slide with a Sims or RAM virgin Teflon slide and it will get even better! Goes to show that folks need to beware what they wish for. The rollers were added due to extreme customer demand. Partially due to the horrible factory slides that have been supplied with bows. But rarely does a fixed roller guard add any benefit other than cosmetics.
