Post by: deadlift on January 13, 2015, 11:35:03 AM
Hey Guys,
We get a ton of questions from new and experienced shooters that have build questions, so I figured this would give me a chance to help you guys out that are left wondering. Obviously I'm not claiming to know everything and I will advise everyone as best I can and if I don't have a answer I will say so. Also this is a good chance to introduce everyone to me, I'm the voice (phone monkey) on the other end of the line at Benchmark most the time. My Back ground is hunting and shooting since 12 years old, I got the long range bug shortly after and started shooting any steel I could weld a base on once I hit about 17. The tech side of the accurate rifle has always been the holy grail for me and I continue to try to expand my knowledge as much as possible by shooting everything I can from steel to critters.
Any thing I can help with I will do my best. When it comes to caliber/rifle advise I will advise you with what I have found to work best in either the same situation or something close, so that being said some guys may disagree with what I have to say. And thats just fine, again I will only advise on what I've had experiance with. It's good to here with everyone and hopefully I will see you out shooting!

ok I will bite. I am a complete novice to long range hunting. I know there is a lot going on besides the rifle and caliber.
But first steps.
I want to extend my range to 500-600 yards. But would like a rifle that would be capable to go further.

I am 63 and want to shoot further because I am tired of trying to out run the young guys to the animals.
I do not like prone position shooting. I want to sit or stand.

I have my heart set on a Remington 700 LR.
My hang up is caliber. I prefer 30.06. Not into the heavy recoil rifles. . And I do not reload.

I am also a left handed shooter. Ya I know they do not make the 700 LR in Left hand. That is not a deal breaker for me. I own a right hand Rem. 700 VTR in .223.
I am not looking for fast 2nd shots. I am looking for 1 shot kills.
I do not own a left handed rifle. And I own several rifles. MY deer gun now is a Remington pump 30.06.

Game animals, Black Bears, Moose, Caribou, Mule Deer,

So given this info. What caliber???

I plan to top the rifle with a Leupold, something with dial up turrets maybe.

Would like the rifle alone to be $1000.00 or less plus scope.

Do not care about looks. I hunt and own no safe queens.

What would the expected barrel life be for a moderately loaded 300 rum (215 bergers at 2950)? Can you answer for a remington sendero factpry barrel and also a benchmark?

I would look at any of the 7mm'ers up to the Dakota, recoil will be a factor on accuracy when shooting seated, kneeling or standing you want a rifle you can steer easily but has the knock down for big game at moderate distances. My first choice would be the 280 Ackley or a heavier 7mm dakota (+12lbs).
My next choice would be the 6.5 on a larger round like the saum or wsm, but feeding can be an issue if not done correcly. IMO stay away from anything larger than 30 cal. Too much recoil for you situation and look long and hard at a side discharge good break. I would rebarrel an existing remmy 700 or savage to hit that $$ range. Just re-reading your post all these will be ok, but the 7mm rem mag may be your best choice. One caliber that would be usable would be the 6.5 creedmoor, very good round but on the smaller side. The good news is the loaded ammo is extremely accurate and cheapish.

Honestly we havent had anyone burn one out, not sure if its cause thats a thumper or cause its expensive to shoot. Our 300 winnys are running 2000-2500 rnds depending on what your level of expected sustained accuracy is. I can't comment on remmy barrels.

For the record, I smoked my 300 RUM Striker in about 1200 rounds. It had a good life........ :chuckle:

For Chris, what are your thoughts on the different rifling styles (3 groove, 5R, polygonal, gain twist, ratchet, etc...) from a barrel maker's perspective? I'm sure that you've heard feedback from a variety of people on the subject, I curious what your take is.

Tagging along
Title: Re: Ask Benchmark Barrels
Post by: deadlift on January 19, 2015, 04:02:19 PM
Nitriding is a liquid bath immersion at roughly 950F that hardens the surface with minimal "growth"on the treated part. Since it is an immersion you get the benefit of bore and surface treatment. This toughening is supposed to get you more barrel life as well as slicking the treated parts. But here are the kickers, it will decrease the rust resistance of stainless steel, increase the rust resistance of chromoly and we will only send it out if the barrel has under 5 rds through it. The reason is once the bore is firecracked that solution raises the edges and can cause flaking of the bore (really bad!). But this is just our protocol and we do this as we've seen what happens when this is NOT followed. My opinion is to do it on really tight custom actions but I'm too impatient to do it on my own barrels, sometimes rifle ADD is bad  :bash:

Sorry, I have one more question about the muzzle brake.  What is the estimated time frame for completion?  I am very serious about doing it, and I would like it done by a certain time this year, no rush, I just want to know when I should bring it up to you guys if I want it done by this spring.  Is it a week, a month, 2 months, I am patient, I just want to know what to expect.

On a side note, I think that this is a great idea.  I think I know a fair amount about shooting guns, but I have no experience in gunsmithing outside of building AR's.  The only information I know about precision gunsmithing is based on what I read on the internet.  I have learned to filter a lot of what I read... I am the guy that scours forum threads around the internet to learn about something.  It will be really nice to be able to ask questions when I have them and know that the person behind the computer on the other side knows what he is talking about.

You guys will be getting my business in the near future.

Kevin

The lightest barrel for accuracy is a loaded question, I will need to know how heavy you want the rifle, what caliber is it gonna be in and the barrel length. Fluted or no fluting? There's lots of variables with that, but I can help if you need it.
Thanks,

As light as possible with MOA accuracy for three shot groups. The caliber can be anything .25 or larger, preferably ,27 to .30.

Barrel length would ideally be 22" or longer.

Thank you.

Hey Bob,
If it were me I'd run a 6.5x280 ack or a 280ack with this build. Ive shot both of these rounds extensively and they rock. The performance and feeding is very reliable and reloading is easy with 280 ack nosler brass.

Benchmark in my own opinion has the best customer service hands down. I had a 7 rem mag barreled action built by them and it shoots lights out 2 inch 5 shot groups @ 600 yards with 180 bergers. they have the fastest turn around time mine was done in 2 months try that with Hart barrels or anybody else my buddy has been waiting 11 months for his. and they are the only ones who offer a military discount great guys.

Thanks, Barry and Chris

I can vouch for Benchmark as well. Barry, Ron and Chris are stand up guys and are there to help you the customer. They don't make you feel like a dip chit, even though most of us are compared to the amount of knowledge these guys have. They've built me a .338 Edge and now a 7 Dakota is in the works. As long as those guys are behind the open doors of Benchmark Barrels, I will only take my rifles to them. While there are dozens of "top tier" gunsmiths across the nation, we really are lucky to have one nearby that you can talk to in person and shake hands with knowing you've got one bad azz rifle.

I really like my Kimber Montana rifles, but the light ugly barrels seem temperamental to bullet weights.  I've wanted to try a different taper and fluted replacement.  Reason I have not had it done yet is that most shops similar to yours say they will not touch the Kimber action.  Do you know why that is?  What is Benchmark's policy on Kimber rifles?

338LM question.

What is the optimal barrel twist for:

1.  adequate stability to get a 0.4 MOA group at 200 yards for 300 Grain bullets (eliminating bullet precession)?

2. ensuring adequate stability for the transition to subsonic flight for a 300 grain bullet?

I have a question about a remington 700.  After I purchased the gun, I noticed that when I lift up the bolt handle to cock the firing pin back, the firing pin comes back, but if I don't pull the bolt back as if I was ejecting a round, and just keep the bolt all the way forward, and lower the bolt hand back down, the firing pin goes back forward as well.  I don't know if that makes sense, I cannot figure out a better way to say it.  The bolt needs to actually be pulled back in order for the gun to be cocked.  I know that this isn't normal, I have other remington's that don't do that.  You can just lift up the bolt, and lower it back down and it will stay cocked.  It happens with the XMP trigger, and also the timney trigger.  I know that it is something in my bolt, because i put another remington bolt in my gun and it didn't do it anymore.

Any Ideas on how to fix?

Hello everyone,

Bill from Benchmark Barrels here.

To clarify things, Chris R. has started his own business and moved on as of March 11, 2016. All of us at Benchmark wish him the best in his new endeavor!! We're still here building barrels and plan to be for a long time. Unfortunately, we don't have the resources to monitor the forums right now, so there won't be any further response from us here.

Thanks for understanding and call us at the shop if you have any questions.

Regards,
