I've used a Tri-Tronics Sport basic for years and it has worked great, no issues, no problems.

I've not been happy with Dogtra of late. The collars are great, but I got a lot less than ten years out of my 3502 even after sending it in for repair.
I bought the new Garmin Delta Upland and have been very happy with it so far, but for a long haired dog like yours you might want something you can get longer contacts for.

I have one I would sell you, tried to PM you but your inbox is full..... PM and can you give your he details
Its a Tri-Tronics Sport Upland G3 EXP
-
Tri-Tronics having been sold to Garmin, they've stopped making certain models and replacement parts so, Garmin just turned TT into throw away stuff.
I bought a Dogtra Edge RT. I can get anyone here a really good deal on it. Pretty well under $400. I really like mine. Very easy to use, good feel and all the right features.
Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

Disagree with Tri-tronics is junk... Have owned my original one for over 15 years and it still works like a champ.... :bdid:
-
I don't think Happy was saying the older models are junk. However, Garmin bought TT so they don't make parts for the older models, much like yours that you've had for 15 years. They are slowly (or quickly depending on how you look at it) changing all of the new TT models over to the Garmin brand. So the quality of the new GARMIN will not be the same. It's a business, so Garmin will look to cut corners to increase margins.
When people say "i've used it for 15 years" that's great and they have a great product, but now when their battery doesn't last as long and they try to replace it, that wont be possible. :twocents:

out of curiosity what have you noticed about Garmin cutting corners on their new products? i run the pro 70 and its been performing just the same as any of the classic 70 or trashbreaker G2 or G3s ive had. the pro's easier to charge, its a smaller receiver, has remote LED lights, and has a built in NO bark collar.

it is a throw away collar. No replacement parts, batteries or customer service to support the product. So when it quits working, throw it away and buy a new one. Something as simple as the dog chews off the antennae. trash.

Its kinda like anything out there, you can debate and debate all you want and still run into a wall of what is best..... :bash:

no question in my mind TT used to be the best.

Agree with you that TT used to be the best absolutely!
so i guess where im confused is the "Throw away collar" . there are batteries ect for the Garmin Pro Series and have all the replacement parts the Tri Tronics G3 series had. they have warranties and refurbishment services. if your dog chewed up the antenna on a pro series you can get it refurbished the same thing you would have to do if your dog chewed up your G3 transmitter
i dont by any means think Garmin is the best option for everybody and i do think that its kind of like ford chevy dodge, pick one and you most likely will have a good experience. i just dont agree with the thinking that since Garmin bought TT that its all crap now... its not like Garmin fired everyone at tri tronics who was designing and building these things and tried guessing how to do it on their own.

I do not believe refurbishment and new spare parts are offered. You can barely find a collar on the Garmin website. The word is that Garmin purchased TT for a patent they had and have no intention of keeping a low production company in their portfolio.
Collar Clinic was a private company not affliated with TT. CC has announced there are collars they can no longer repair and refurbish because Garmin is not continuing to make or offer parts.
-
This used to always be a few pages long. They've hardly had any collars for a long time. The Garmin buy started quite a while ago.

I've been told Garmin Aircraft instruments are good. Of course, they must follow very strict rules and comprehensive testing to get a product to market per FAA rules. This is where their focus lies. My buddies in the Marine Industry do anything they can to avoid putting a Garmin product on a boat. Said the same thing for years. Buy Furuno and avoid Garmin like the plague. It appears to me they've done the same thing with the Tri-Tronics company. They want to sell products which means not replacing broken parts and forcing the public to buy new, not refurbished.

I can get this Dogtra for about the same price as GDS if anyone is interested. It's a great collar.
-
as for the G3s, they still support and have full refurbishment and applicable warranty status. in fact i have two trashbreakers showing up next week. the G2 and older stuff are no longer serviceable but tri tronics ended that before they sold to Garmin but it probably had something to do with the prospect of selling. Garmin is moving into farther into the dog world after the success of the Gps collars. they acquired Tri Tronics because they were the best, it makes sense that they would want their people making the stuff. Thats one of the reasons that Tri Tronics still on the box for the new pro series
-
"They want to sell products which means not replacing broken parts and forcing the public to buy new, not refurbished."
that's not true, i get refurbished equipment in every week. they offer all the replacement parts that Tri tronics offered for the G3s
-
you are selling refurbished equipment direct from Garmin?
-
Also, the only product they are "SERVICING" is the G3 500. No other models. So, if you bought a G2 or other G3 model you are squish out of luck.
-
I provide refurbishment service for my customers through Garmin, i do not sell refurbished equipment out right unless im getting alot of over stock. including G3 field Transmitters (classic 70 and trashbreaker), not just the pro 500 that is false and g2 and g3 EXP receivers. Garmin does not refurbish G2 and older transmitters or older recievers.

Garmin said no to fixing my friends G3 Flyway. They were specific saying ONLY G3 Pro 500 and 550's.

I'm good and he's also bought a new Dogtra Edge RT. I have a G2 Flyway with two collars and a beeper I'll keep for back up or if I buy a pointing dog someday. I had a Dogtra NC long time ago I gave to a friend who is still using it. Really quality products and still have great customer service.
The Pro trainers in the area who have been with Tri Tronics for over 35 years(easily singles out which FT trainers have been in the NW for that time period) are switching to Dogtra and no longer supporting Garmin.

Don't buy Garmin!!!! I bought one and it is garbage! Tears the dogs neck up, I contacted Garmin and they refuse to do anything.
-
I own the alpha its nice to have peace of mind knowing where your dog is all the time especially after losing a dog for a few hours while hunting in a corn field. I used the gps this year to guide me down the mt in fog while chukar hunting. It also has a flashing led on the collar for those long walks back to the truck in the dark.

A few factors can contribute to hot spots. Allergy to the Nickle in the contact points to simply having it on to randomly and during long periods of wet skin

I find it very odd. She can wear any other brand of training collar with no problem but if she wears that one for even a couple of hours her neck is bleeding when I take it off.

:yeah: it's pretty common I used to get it a lot with my labs usually rotating positions on the dog on a regular basis limits the hotspot
You have tried every brand? I've had it happen with garmin, tt, dt, and dogtra, but I have used those a lot more than other brands
-
I guess I cannot say every brand, but every other brand I have tried has no problem. I've tried Dogtra, TT, and a couple of off brands as well. None of them has caused no issue, but if she wears that one for a couple of hours and we are talking blood running down her neck. Not cool. Which is why I ended up throwing it away. Which I was pretty upset about considering what I paid for it.
-
Never mind, I thought I threw it away, but apparently my wife hung into it. She is determined to get some of our money back.
-
What model
-
Uh...I think a Delta Sport. I can't remember. I can look later tonight.
-
Huh that was even with the short prongs then, I usually see it more with longer prongs

There is no way a dog will bleed from a 5-10 minute session with a collar on. Matt, I don't believe I've ever met you. Do you run any HRC, hunt tests or field trials with your dogs you train? I'm at pointer hunt tests and trials in wa or and Idaho pretty regularly too.

I never said 5-10 minutes. I said within a couple of hours.

I had one of the older TT units and it worked pretty well.
I later got one of the early Flyway units and found out why everyone said TT had the best service dept and product backing in the industry. It's from experience, everyone had to use it.
Bought a Dogtra 2000 NC unit more than a dozen yrs ago and the only time I have had to send it back was after many years to change batteries. It was a demo model I bought from a factory rep, I have no idea how many hrs it had on it before I got it.

Nope, I don't have the desire for hunt tests ect.. Just train my dogs for hunting, and I've got access to a whole lot of different gear to use/test

Thanks so much for the input on collars everyone
Would like to support a sponsor on her,e high country hunter88, but have a $200 gift card from Cabelas have to use. Again thanks for taking to time to chime in

Looks like you got your answer bud but I've used both TT and dogtra. My G3 500 is rock solid. I like dogtra but I love the transmitter of the pro series TT. You can't go wrong with Dogtra, but I think the jury is still out on TT since the Garmin buyout.
