So I bought a preference point last year for Wyoming and I'm kind of up in the air on whether I should just start applying for hunts or just wait it out until I get a good stack of points? Any thoughts or comments on what people have done in the past would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Put in for a top hunt for your first choice. Then for your 2nd and 3rd choice put in for something with good odds of drawing. If you draw 2nd or 3rd choice you will not burn your one point, and still gain another.
So you'll still have a chance to hunt deer out of state and build your points till your ready to put them all towards a trophy hunt.

If you wouldn't mind getting drawn this year, and there is a chance to get drawn this year, then apply. If the odds are zero, or you don't want to get drawn this year, buying a point would be a good choice. The odds of getting drawn in the top units of western states is so small, even with lots of points, that it makes sense to put your name in the hat even when odds are very low. :twocents:

Maybe I missed it but what species did you buy a point for? If you want to do a hunt this year then I would def apply. Lots of good units to hunt with one or two points.

I have researched WY alot over the years and thought it was a good idea to start buying points, but the more I have read I shoulda of just applied every year I wanted to hunt. You can pretty much hunt WY every other year in the general units.
Probably be a long time before I apply now that Im in the nowhere point zone where your wasting your points to draw a general or not enough to draw a quality tag. There is so many units in WY that offer great hunting that a quality tag really isnt needed and most of the biggest bulls and bucks come from general units every year

I've got 2 deer and 3 antelope points

Region F is a sure fire draw every year. Lots of great land to hunt. Region H is a good hunt that you can draw every other year and have great success. It all depends on what kind of hunt you want. If you're looking for a true western Wyoming Deer hunt, 4 points to get into G, which is "the end all be all"...You can probably get into good hunting anywhere in the state with good public access. Antelope....that's a whole 'nother beast...Some areas you can draw every year. Some are private land hunts or within 800 yards of them; great if you secure access to farms, not so great if you don't/can't secure access. Elk, well you can draw the general hunt every other to every 3rd year without spending the $1000 bucks for the special tag. There are tons of bits of information on the website from draw odds to success rates etc.

I drew 3 years running on the G tag with 25% odds. Then I missed last year @ 20% odds. Seen a couple of nice of nice bulls. Bit the bullet today and decided to go for better odds with the special this year. Not sure how many more years I'll be able to cross the canyon. Just not sure I left enough in the bank for when deer apps come up.

The best area in WY is G. It is way better than most if not all of the limited units. People want to hold out and hunt limited units that take more pts to draw than G but don't have near the quality of G. Use your pts on G soon. As hard as you hunt you could kill a monster in G.

The best thing to do is apply and see if you can get the tag.
Someone has to draw.
There is fantastic hunting in Wyoming.

I put in for a good elk unit.
I am not sure what are the good rifle speed goat units or rifle mule deer units.
The other states I will only put in for slam dunk hunts like a top unit rifle hunt in the rut. My chances of drawing is like getting hit by lightening.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll put them to good use!

I've got 5 antelope and 5 deer points, thinking about trying to draw a decent antelope tag this year somewhere along the way to colorado for my deer hunt. Anyone have any experience in the southwest corner of Wyoming for antelope?
-
Iirc there is a ton of public land in the southwest of WY and many of the good units are there. This would be a more important decision factor to me than perceived trophy quality given the draconian trespass laws.
