With all the drama threads lately, let's start a thread about quality, top notch, hunting gear. Name the pieces of gear that you feel can't be beat, and to you, are unarguably the best in their class.
I'll start. Kifaru meat baggies for hauling out boned out meat and TightSpot quivers. Both unbeatable........

2014 Polaris RZR 570 side x side.

Can't leave the house to hunt without my EL 10x42's and STS-65
-
For me....I'm very very impressed with my kuiu ultra 1800 pack... the combination of simplicity, versatility, and durability make it a true year round pack for me

Outdoorsman medium tripod. Swarovski 15x56 HD.

Sitka 90 percent pants.
-
Filson guide waterfowl sweater. The one made in the US. I burned a huge hole in the back of mine this year. :bash: Trying to find a replacement but they don't make them anymore.
-
Sitka 90 percent pants.
Really? My 2014 version isn't hardly water resistant. Seems like any fleece or wool would be as warm and dry. Maybe you have 2013 version?

I have not noticed water intrusion but hunting pheasant in S. Dakota with wind chill at -23 I was extremely impressed and not cold at all. The Sitka pants with one layer of merino wool pants and I was golden when most others were frigid cold. I do recall a little dampness after sitting a couple hours thawing up the frozen ground beneath my rear in the NE corner during late deer. In reality I have not really put them to the waterproof test. I do believe they are 2013 since I got them on camofire during the 2014 season. Didn't they sell to Gore-Tex?

:IBCOOL:
I drank the premium clothing coolaid and bought a buttload of it after this last season. The weather was so crazy with the highs and lows and wind this year that I just "F it" and bought a bunch of gear. I was sick of being hot and soaked with sweat and then freezing in the afternoon when the temps dropped. God forbit it rained! We all know what happens to cotton when it's cold windy and rainy. I bought Sitka, Kuiu, First Lite. I simply cannot believe how comfortable the Attack and Ascent pants are. It's just crazy to me. Then there's first lite with their wool!!! If your skeptical, don't be. All of these companies products are amazing and I'd definately recommend starting with at least a pair of the pants from either one of them. You'll be hooked. I guarantee it.

I don't know if I own anything Id consider best in it's class, but I'm always happy with my Sitka gear. Also looking forward to using the crap out of my new GoLite SL5. Thinking pretty hard about a stove jack and a Seek Outside or Kifaru stove. Don't think you can go wrong with that combo for a warm and comfy backpacking setup.
-
Best piece for me would be Swaro 10x42 EL's
-
Foxpro firestorm, 20x60x80 vortex spotting scope, and my knight bighorn .50 cal muzzleloader. I have other things i like and a ton of stuff still on the wish list but those 3 things I absolutely love.
-
Swaro spotting scope.
Sitka Timberline Pants (light, with a Gortex butt and knees)...I'm always sitting in wet grass, dirt, stumps, etc even though it's dry out. The gortex butt is great.
-
My Sitka acsent pants are the best pants I have ever worn. My KUIU rain gear has worked flawlessly
-
Carter Release.
452X/XCel string material.
The only two constants in every single bow I have shot in the past 10 years.
Of course those RAD peeps are pretty dang good too :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
This year I switched glasses to the Leica Ultravid HD. Best decision I have made in years. No more Swaro's for me!!
-
My gps has allowed me (worry free) to travel WAY further and cover new areas I would have never seen without it. Travel different route back without a worry.

-
-Swaro 10x42's
-Kenetreks
-
My Rino 655T. Hands down the most useful piece of gear I own. And, my Wazuki knife (shown in avatar).
-
My shooting stix. Nothing like a steady shot when an opportunity arises.
-
My Danner Canadians. Hard to hunt with wet sore feet.
-
Not really gear but I would say my fitness. I spend a lot of time and money staying in good shape and eating healthy so I can continue to hunt every season
-

Agreed: best piece of gear I have is me. If not me, then La Sportiva Trango boots.
-
I have accumulated a lot of good pieces of gear over the last few years from clothes to glasses, tripods, packs etc but unless you never leave the truck good boots top my list of must haves. Once you wear good boots you can never go back to what you used to think were good boots, Danners etc. I am a tightwad and thats why it took me until the last few years to make the jump to $400 boots but I am here to tell you that if you hunt hard ,do it its worth it. Dry feet and no blisters and great support.
-
What boots do you use nwhunter? :)
-
Kennetrek boots and gators.

Garming 62st and onXmaps.
So much land I have or havent been able to comfortably touch without knowing land owners.

I tried the Crispi boots but they didnt hold up to the Blues. Kenetreks were my next boot and I couldnt be happier. Comfortable, good support and my feet stay dry.

I used to buy danners. They were so comfortable but I'd wear out a pair a year. I switched to Kenetrek mountain extremes about 5 -6 years ago and they are pretty much still like new. Ive used them in the blues during some nasty conditions as well as all over the palouse and even to Wyoming a couple of times. Still no leaking and like i said, pretty much like new. I have hot feet though and they are a touch warm so i bought kennetrek hard scrabbles too. I think I'll be good to go for a long while
-
I got three seasons out of my Kenetreks extremes, was pretty happy with them
Tried the Crispi last year, did less than 40 days in field and destroyed them, completely,
they were super comfortable, just fell apart

Heavy enough to chop with. Skins, guts, cuts. Mine from the 1960's has the wood handle though.

My modified Fiskar Brush Axe. It is an essential piece of gear for me while trapping and hunting, for cutting trails, and for clearing brushed in roads. It is just handy as heck. I have one in what ever rig I am in. I feel exposed when I don't have it with me in the woods.
I talked about it in this thread:

I will add Lorpen socks to my list.
Not sure I have had a blister, an irritating fold, or an annoying seam in the past five years since making the switch to Lorpen. Wife thinks I'm crazy for having one drawer dedicated to $400 worth of hunting socks, but it just may be my finest hunting apparel investment.

For me its gotta be TP if you forget you will know it!!!

I have some Lorpen socks they are good socks, but dont compare to my Darn tough socks unbeleivable what I have hiked in them and they look brand new.

We should compile a top 10 list style gear guide... guns, jackets, tents, boots, blades, packs, binos..... Ya know that kind of stuff
Just an idea
-
Irish Setter boots, 200 thinsulates, use them for the early and late season. Always keep me dry and feel great on my feet. Next in line would be my Cabela's Euro 10x42 binocs.

i like the idea but i think peoples usage varies so much it woudnt work.
some people prefer a robust knife, where i wouldnt want to carry something so "heavy"
alot of people would scoff at my pack and sleeping bag budget, maybe they cant justify that for their usage...

Exactly, I have tried stuff that others have said was "the best" but it just didn't work for me or my style of hunting. Plus fit and comfort are such variables for every hunter it would be hard to compare apples to apples.
-
For hunting, I would have to say the Swaro's
For hiking/hunting it would be my Exped sleeping pad

Take your pick! They have a sock for just about every situation and every temperature you intend to hunt. I've never worn a pair out while in my boots. But I did wear out a pair of the Primaloft in one day using them as slippers as I scurried around the dirty lodge in WI on the day we could not get out. In a good pair of boots they will last years if not a decade.
The "Work & Tactical" category socks are much more durable and lower tops. I wear them hunting in temperatures 30-50 degrees. The hikers are what I wear during most of early archery season. Moreno won't last as long and though it does keep from getting stanky I tend to shy away from Moreno in hot weather. I do wear them in crossover temperatures though. For OMG cold and late season comfort I'm crazy for both the Skinny Jim and Thermolite liners. They wrap my foot like I painted them on, yet they don't give me that cramped toe feeling. I run knee highs during the late and cold season. I do like the HEL, but I have three other ones that seem equally as warm and the Primaloft might be even a touch warmer if your boot fits loose.
The first set of Lorpen I tried was a gift from a co-worker called the CWSS "Cold Weather System Sock". It is a wool liner and cold weather sock all in one package. You basically pay for pair of socks and get a pretty darn good liner for free. Not a bad way to go if you want to find out what Lorpen comfort is all about without dropping $25 for one pair.
If I had to pick just one that I like best...probably the HEL with a Thermolite liner. But...I have yet to buy a Lorpen sock I did not like!

Prefer Darn Tough socks
-
I found Darn to be a bit more clammy and not quite as comfortable as the Lorpen. But, they are certainly more durable and extremely well made. Hard to beat the "No Strings Attached" warranty for sure! Guess I just like a looser weave and smoother seam at the tow box :dunno:
If I were not wearing Lorpen I certainly would be wearing Darn Tough. No other socks come close to those two IMO. If you wear socks as slippers around the house, lodge or camp no question Darn is the sock. If you like soft, breathable and are sensitive to toe seams I think Lorpen has the edge. Either way, I don't see how a guy could go wrong no matter which he chooses. They are the cream of the crop, for sure!
-
I've been a die hard smart wool kind of guy for quite a long time. How do the darn tough and lorpen socks compare? What is the differences?
-
Bikini frame and t2 bag. Amazing how much weight this frame can haul comfortably. Also a big fan of magnus snuffer ss broadheads.
-
I've been a die hard smart wool kind of guy for quite a long time. How do the darn tough and lorpen socks compare? What is the differences?
Night and day difference IMO. But, to be honest I have not used any Smartwool outside of their designated Hunt/Fish selection. To me the Smartwool made me think of the old days when Thorlo was the cream of the crop...a nice sock, but not in the class of a Darn or Lorpen. I know the wife wears them out rather fast too. Though I never wore them long enough to find out how the men's held up as I gave mine away as soon as I hiked in Lorpen for the first time.
Smartwool (that I tried) and Darn had about the same toe box seam. Which is nice. And I thought the Smartwool did breath better than the Darn Tough. But that is about as close as they got for me. I'd certainly never buy another pair unless Lorpen and Darn Tough went out of business or decided to bash hunters. Neither of which I see happening anytime soon ;)
-
I like a calf-height sock and use Smart Wools. Wore 2 pairs last year for 16 days without washing and didn't smell hardly at all. No signs or wearing out either or creating hot spots on my feet. Those paired with Lathrop Synergy footbeds and Lowa Tibets have been awesome.
I looked at Darn Tough socks but couldn't find any that were taller than "boot height". Rad, you know of any taller ones?
-

I'm curious about the Lorpen and Darn Tough, but I'm so completely happy with Smartwool that I can't see changing. Kind of like I couldn't be happier driving with a 394HP Hemi - but I've never driven a 600+HP Italian sports car!

You and BLRman talked me into these last year. After the pain in my wallet wore off I really began to love these things. So much so I now wear them every day. Don't tell the wife I have more money in undies than I do in socks :yike: She'd probably leave me for sure! :chuckle:

Ive never had Darn tough (may need to try some) but I agree with Rad I have smartwool and Lorpen and although both are great the Lorpen never stretch out and last longer for me. After awhile I have to throw away perfectly good smartwool cause for some reason they start bunching up under the arch of my foot, drives me crazy! grrr Anyway the Lorpen seem to breath a bit better and my feet dont get clammy but having said that they are both better than anything else I have tried but the Lorpen are just a notch up from the smartwool IMO.
-
I've got some Smartwool socks that I don't like as they make my feet feel clammy.
2-3 years ago I bought a couple pairs of Thorlo heavy trekking socks and thought they were God's gift to feet. Are you guys telling me there's better?

Yes, I am :chuckle: I have about six pair of Thorlo left and the only thing they get used for are slippers. Thorlo makes a dang good slipper, though ;)

Actually I forgot I used to have some thorlo and I liked them ... but the first time I bought just a pair of Lorpen to try I actually went right back as soon as I got back from my hike and bought some more!

I like Thorlo too but like Smartwool better. I have about 5 different thicknesses, your feet will get clammy if you wear a heavy pair on a warm day or wear insulated boots.

I'm the exact opposite. Tried different lorpen socks and they just didn't do it for me. Smartwool work great. I always wear the thinner types. Kind of nasty but after 5 or 6 days they're still tight and comfy. Might have to try Darn Tough out of curiosity.
-
While we're in socks, I bought 3 pair of the new KUIU. Not happy at all. Sock doesn't fit properly even though it's the right size. Immediately after putting on, they start to creep down. The toe has way to much material causing them to bunch up. For the price of 3 pair, I could have bought 15 more Lorpen off Camofire. They are packaged up and getting sent back.

Interesting topic.... I went to the Lorpen website and see they have about a jillion different styles. Which style do you like best and why?
Thanks, I'm getting tired of Costco socks.

Best piece of gear - your brain... Close second, your body. invest in those in that order first. Otherwise all the fancy gear and gadgets are worthless. Just think of the old timers in their wool and flannel who can out hunt 100 average hunters decked out in the latest and greatest stuff...
A runner up is your time. Apply your brain (learning, strategy, experience), your time (scouting, etc), and your body (so you can get out of the truck and work for it) - and the rest of the stuff is just there to talk about and spend your money on during the 'off season' :chuckle:

Or he found a way to dispacth his trapping catches with a laserbeam? Maybe he puts it on a sharks head? :dunno: :chuckle:

Can't walk can't hunt! :chuckle:
Haha so true ... whats funny is that before you have kids you never thought of having a supply in your backpack after you have kids you wonder how you got by without them! :chuckle:
I spent a great deal of $ on baby wipes when I was in the middle east, my appreciation for wet wipes was started in basic training. glad I learned early, I keep some in my truck and in my pack.

Cabela's has been running a good sale lately. Think I paid just over $18 last week. New shorts at used price :chuckle:

A laser ?????
-
The Laser isn't available for shipping into the US. :bdid: Smossy, you would hurt yourself, anyway, or SG. You really need to stick to blunt, light, rubber things too large to fit in your nose or ears.

Heavy enough to chop with. Skins, guts, cuts. Mine from the 1960's has the wood handle though.

I have that same knife. A hand me down from my dad, probably late 60's early 70's, mine has the bone handle. It is a beast. Sharp as all get out and holds and edge very well. I let mine get tarnished/rusted a bit from a wet sheath :bash:

Umm, oh yes, of course!!!! Strictly by the book, old man.

Case XX Changer.....compact, quality workmanship and everything I need in a small package in the field. Like them so much that I have purchased several as gifts for others over the years. Just a nice quality made in the USA item.

Netcoyote, is that on the ridge above Goat Creek?

Netcoyote, is that on the ridge above Goat Creek?
It's at Heart Lake in the Goat Rocks Wilderness accessed via the Lilly Basin trail. The valley below is the Middle Fork of Johnson Creek. Took this pic of my wife in 2010 on a 4 day backpack trip in the GRW.

Yea, I agree. Been with this lady for 25 years. One of the toughest outdoor people I know. We spent about 15 years climbing all over the state; climbed Liberty Ridge on Rainier with her in '94 (see pic). That tent was on every major peak in the state including several nights on the Rainier crater during an extended trip.

I missed it by a ridge. Love that country.

It does start fires, and is the best signaling device, Its not a standard point and shoot laser that only projects on its target, Its a solid beam. Weighs less than a pound, Also cool entertainment. Also additional attachments to turn it into a flashlight.
-
That is seriously a very tough question, one that truly has 2 answers, for me anyway.
Either my 10x Leica Geovids or my box of baby butt wipes............. ;).

By the way guys, after reading your glowing reviews i bought a pair of those lorpen socks. Not sold. Scratchy seam across the top of my toes was no fun. But other than that pretty good. I think Im sticking to smartwool, though I still havent tried darn tough. Maybe a different line of lorpen would be better? I bought these:

I have never worn any of the casual work socks. Every one I've ever purchased has an arch wrap and heal pad. Sorry to hear those were not good for you. Really surprised about the seam. That is usually the best part of a Lorpen sock and why I started wearing them in the first place.
