Title: Mucks vs lacrosse
Post by: n_mathews13 on January 29, 2015, 06:36:06 AM
Need to get a pair of rubber boots for my spring bear hunt in AK. Anyone got an opinion on what boot is better? Mucks vs lacrosse.

I've been wearing muck for the past 16 years ish and have yet to be forced to look else where. No experience with the lacrosse simply because the muck has never failed me.

You walk a lot in them? Do they breath good enough?

I walk in my mucks a long ways, I love them but my feet sweat a bunch and the neoprene(prob spelled wrong) material does not breath.  Very comfortable boot to walk in.

I walk a ton in them. Breath, no. They are rubber and neoprene. No brand of that material will breath. What I absolutely love about them is that they fold in half and allow the hot air to escape out the top. I wear them folded down 90% of the time then pop them up at water crossings, wet grass, etc. I use a silk sock liner and the thinnest smart wool hiking sock, from summer to late winter and have hiked 8ish miles in a day in them. Not the best hiking boot but was comfortable and was able to do the same hike the next day.

Costco in Puyallup had one style of Mucks on tbe shelf. I tried them on and they were comfortable, too bad I don't need new boots right now or I may have bought them.

I have a pair of Muck boots that I love.  Very comfortable, dry and warm  Durable, too.  I've never worn a Lacrosse boot of the same type, so can't say anything there.  I do have Lacrosse old fashioned rubber boots and neoprene waders, though.  They're good quality.

i think some have gone away from mucks due to their political affiliations...

i've owned a pair for about 5 years, the woody max.  great cold weather boots, not so good in anything above 50 degrees though, your feet will roast off if you have to move around much.

Can't comment on lacrosse but after moving to NE Montana 2 years ago I bought a pair of arctic mucks. Comfortable and warm, wore them for 3 weeks straight a month ago when we had -20 days. Like was said before tho they don't breathe well but fold them down in half and they will breathe better if need.

I have some of the cabelas ( not sure which model) and they are great when it's cold out but u will sweat in them. I wear mine fishing in icy creeks, snow machining, work. There good boots. Only problem I can see is they are not totally puncture proof . I think they were like 150 @ cabelas.

I would add Boggs to the list. Great warranty on them.
:yeah:
I absolutely love my Bogs!  Extremely comfortable and if I remember right they were cheaper than Mucks.  Bogs warranty can't be beat either.  I would recommend checking them out as well.

Alaska Sneakers   - the quality issue they had when they moved manufacturing over seas a couple of years ago has been resolved.  They are the unofficial Alaska State Boot afte all.  I have  both insulated and non-insulated.  Very comfortable to wear and the insulated are darn warm, but still comfortable to 50 degrees or so. the non-insulated are for the rest of the year when it's wet out.  They are not nearly as stiff as the mucks.   AKA 16" XtraTufs :twocents:

Under Armor makes a muck style boot as well I have had mucks, bogs, and the under armor ones the under armor have been the most comfortable.  I will say all have been great boots.

I've had good luck with LaCrosse "rubber" boots.

:yeah: Southeast slippers. Get a set of caulked extra tuffs for hunting. My mucks are warm but heavy and not worth a crap on the deck of a boat. I wouldn't want to walk far in them. I've only used lacrosse for feeding the pigs or mucking stalls.

Xtra tuffs for me. Fold them down when hot. Only thing lacking for me is the extra traction that my lacrosse have. Wish I could breed them together.  :chuckle:

The traction on all of them sucked! It's why I choose the cabelas Camo . Great traction, warm in icy water.
