Title: Best spotting scope tripod under $200
Post by: Falcon on February 01, 2015, 01:11:51 PM
Recently got a nice used swaro spotting scope.
Looking for the best tripod for the money.
It won't be used for back country use, but I don't want one too heavy to take into the woods.

Any advice appreciated

Bryan

Also watch camofire or Blackovis for deals on Vanguards. I have a Vanguard and really like it. I'll find it and post the model #.  Can't recall which it is.

I bought a Manfrotto Befree a while back for my Mk4 spotting scope and I've been very happy with it. They're right about $200. It's very stable, reasonably light (mine's the aluminum not carbon fiber), and works great if you don't need true pan head tripod.

I bought this one last summer. I used it all season and am very happy with it. Its not a high dollar one, but it was very compact, packable, stable and the head was pretty smooth. Great tripod for the money. I got mine at Sportsmans for $130.

Link,

Thats the model I am looking for.
You got a good deal at 130 bones.

I am 100% certain once I get the right tripod for my swaro the Washington bighorn sheep tag is as good as in the mail this year.:chuckle: :chuckle:

Are you guys using the vortex tripod standing with a straight spotter or an angled one? If straight, how tall are you and is it comfortable. I'm in the market for my first tripod to go along with my first spotting scope and trying to figure it all out. I will be getting a straight scope for sure.

I use a vortex tripod. I am 6'1" and I can take it up over my head. I use a straight spotter.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Hit Elknut1 up on here for a price on that tripod. $130 is MSRP. He might be a little better than that.

Which model? The one jackelope posted a link to only goes to 54.5 inches.

You gotta pick your priorities too. Do you want a tripod tall enough to use standing up or do you want a lightweight compact one, etc. The ss-p weighs 2 pounds, the one Ben posted weighs 4.5 pounds. It extends to ~65" tall though, which is great. It's too heavy for me so I'll take the shorter one, bend over or sit down if I'm glassing for extended periods.
Or buy 2.

Outdoorsman or manfrotto, I have the manfrotto carbon fiber sweet for back country hunting. Super lightweight and sturdy

dont skimp on the tripod head...a good tripod is useless with a crappy head

I have one of the vanguard carbon fiber full sized. I spend a lot of time behind it. I am willing to spend the money to find a lighter/better alternative, but have not yet found one.
