I'm looking for an experienced coyote caller/hunter to show me what I'm doing wrong. I've been trying for to call coyotes for 2 or 3 months now and I absolutely cannot call one. I have access to plenty of land to hunt both public and private. Thanks Aaron

Aaron,
Having recently shared your frustration, I can relate. My recent experiences may help, as I know where you are coming from. I just bagged my first coyote yesterday, so I can offer hope to a fellow rookie. So here's the advice to go with it:
Watch any of the Randy Anderson Calling all Coyotes videos. They are full of advice, and you can see what can happen on a real, successful hunt. The one Big Difference is that you have to be very watchful for critters coming in. You won't have the camera to point them out to you. Watching is a habit, and it takes effort and practice. Hunting is not waiting. You may have called crtitters and not seen them. Correction. It is LIKELY that you have brought critters to your area, and simply not seen them. It happens to everyone, and for a variety of reasons.
Perhaps the biggest reason (IMHO) is that they will move to approach the caller from down wind. If they catch your scent, they are gone. The best remedy is to choose a stand where you can see a critter moving to get down wind of you. That can be a tall order, I know.
Hunting is better, now that there is snow to stress the critters. They are more likely to come to your call, and with snow on the ground, you may be able to tell if there are any canis latrans in the area you are hunting. Seeing tracks is believing! Hang in there.
Use stealth when taking your stand. Don't slam car doors. Move to a spot where approaching critters won't see your rig, if possible.
Wind is paramount when picking a stand site. A wind at your back is futility, but a cross wind is not too bad, if you can see downwind.
I also had to work on keeping my movements to the minimum, to avoid detection. I have limited flexibility and found sitting directly on the ground or kneeling very uncomfortable. I was fidgity, and that can't help the hunting. I ended up making a 12" tall stool that I sit on. I know it raises my profile, making me stand out a bit more, but I feel it is worth the trade off. I also dress warmly, expecting to be motionless most of the time.
I am in neighboring Benton County. I'd love to hunt with you, but tend to drive such distances when there is not snow or ice on the road. Gimme a call. 509 378-4064

Do you live in Klickitat?
-
There are a lot of dogs around that area
-
I live in Centerville. I know there are a lot of dogs here but only way I can get them is see them while driving and hope they stay there long enough for me to get off the road.
-
i know that area there are tons of dogs up there. have you tried a electronic call? :twocents: Love that area! Hey does old Skip Clemes of Trophy Hunting Adventures still leasing up all the land up there? I had a run in with his boys about 6 years back :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I've never heard of Skip. Where does he lease, the east side or west side? Yeah I've tried an electronic call but I just need to go with someone who knows what there doing.
-
He has a ton of area around the Heartlands above the dellicort and allot off of the centerville rd west side of the rd. It was really bad a couple years back. He was running people off of wdfw land with ATV's it was a joke. even saw one of his people shoot a spike in one of the fields and drag it off.... >:(

Yesterday I found out calling is indeed for real. I actually called one in but I was so shocked that one came in I froze and didnt get any shots off. My cousin who was with me didn't have that problem but he missed twice. Also this still wasn't in klickitat county, it was in pasco, washington north of road 68. So I havn't got a klickitat dog but now I have at least called one in.
-
Called in my second coyote, but I shot this one. He came in to fawn bleats on my Johnny Stewart call in 16 minutes.
-
Congratulations,
Welcome to the obsession ;)

so you are the one educating all the yotes :chuckle: just messin now you will be dream in about your next one. hate to give to many of my secrets away but when ever i see a yote i shut the caller off and finish with my lip squeaks. even with my hand calls i do this, this is the best time of year for a beginner to start they gettin hungry and are responding good. during the summer they are harder because the eatin good. you should get a few good yotes.
and fc2038 i have lived hear my whole life and never heard of Skip Clemes and my dad has been here for 30 and he has never heard of him, and deer in centerville? very rare we have property there and i know 95% of the farms out there and you would be hard pressed to find a deer you must mean some were outside of centerville like towards high prairie :dunno:
-
Carsniper, I think he was talking about Dillacourt canyon area. Anyway, if you ever want to show me how to coyote hunt so I don't educate all your coyotes, I'm up for it.
-
Lots of yotes at Mt Adams, King mountain area.
-
Anyone gutsy enough to shoot a 'yote' with a bow? I want to try that with my long bow!
-
people hunt coyotes with archery gear. Go to Predatormasters look around for Curt Barrett, one of the best I know, out of Goldendale. He might take you out for a fee. Jerry Malbeck takes people out but not for free.

I know Curt Barrett he lives right next to one of our pieces of property. He is a very good coyote caller, and if i remember right Arron has already talked to him. They are hard to call this time of year for sure.
-
Yea Carl is a pretty good guy and will steer you right
-
Yes, I have talked to Curt a couple times. I was going to go cougar calling with him but he had an emergency and we didn't make it out. He said we would go out sometime for yotes but I havn't heard back from him.
