Title: WESTSIDE CONDITIONING HIKES
Post by: xXLojackXx on February 03, 2015, 08:25:05 AM
Ok guys and gals, time to start raising the bar on conditioning for the upcoming seasons. I plan to keep a running thread of weekly hikes (weekends for me) that will be taking place in efforts to prepare for 2015. All are welcome to join, and all suggestions of trails are appreciated. Easy trails can be made hard as well.  First hike will take place on Saturday Feb 21st for me (Sportsmans show this weekend and some "important" day on the 14th  :bash:) but feel free to get after it with others before then. This thread is simply a place for people on the Westside to congregate for hikes. I'll figure out an accessible trail for the 21st in the coming week.

Mt. Si is 4 miles and 2900' of elevation gain. Do it 1 way in under 2 hours and it's a great workout. Put 50# in your pack and it's even better.
Mailbox Peak was a beast of a hike. I imagine it still is, but I also think they switchbacked it during trail renovations. Tough to access right now due to the paving of Middle Fork Road.
Mason Lake is 2400' of gain in a little over 3 miles one way...also a pretty good grind.
All 3 are pretty close to Seattle.

Done those. My favorite is McClellan Butte. 4 miles and 3700' gain one way. Plus it gets 1/5 of the traffic as Mt Si, Mailbox, Bandera/Granite etc

I'm up for a hike on the 28th if the Special Olympics in Leavenworth are cancelled due to lack of snow. I volunteer at the Cross country ski event.

That's a good up.

Last time I did Mt. Si I was the 1st one in the parking lot in the morning and the 1st one on top. 6:30am is a good time to hit it. Ran into a few people on the way down.
I don't like Mt Si for the crowds and the lack of anything interesting to look at for 8 miles. 1 cool view at the top and that's it. It is good for a workout though.

Wagonwheel lake trail.  Above Cushman.  Very demanding trail. I think it was 2.9m and ?3200ft climb.  Plus you can keep going if thats not enough.

For a quick uphill climb the Hugo Peak trail at Pack Forest will put a good burn in your legs and lungs. It's close in and don't have to travel too far to get to it.

If you ever come up north, Chuckanut Mt. has some trails that go UP.  Try the Oyster Dome on a clear day & the view is a good reward.

Ya, Wagonwheel is a ripper.  Did it in the winter one time, that was dumb.

I like to do Mt Elinor in the winter and summer, gorgeous day hike.

If you are not scrambling over blowdown and snags, then you are conditioning for eastside or a stroll around Green Lake.

Just funning.

Try picking up some local Green Trails maps and exploring some new areas.

When the snow is gone or if you are equipped check out Mt. Pugh out by Darrington and Mt. Dickerman. Both tough hikes with lots of elevation and neither are boring. Views are spectacular of the North Cascades and Glacier Peak. Plus you wont have half of Pugetropolis and their pocket dogs hiking with you.

Mt. Pilchuck is another awesome hike and the road to the trail head is still open. Some snow but doable now.

why not take they kuiu?
i mean after all
I've had all the big name brand packs on my back, and while Kifaru is nice as well, at half the price and just as comfortable, the Kuiu Icon Pro is a better buy.

I'm in Port Townsend (no jokes!) so lots of great access to NF, DNR, and Pope resources land nearby.

Pretty sure Mailbox Peak is not accessible right now due to construction/paving on Middle Fork Road.
And it's all switchbacked now since they renovated it, so not as steep as it was.

Mailbox is open. Gate closes at 6pm so make sure you allow extra time. We were up there on Sunday and the trail was busy. Not real happy about the new trail as that was part of the beauty of the hike was that the trail was absolute garbage an kept people off of it. Still a good hike though, the boulder field has 0 snow which sucks otherwise nice hike.

Done around 50 miles since February 1st.  Hitting it a few times a week.  Just capital peak here in oly and hanging cams in the elk.  Getting the bow dialed as well.  It's gonna be a good year.

Got my Icon pro a couple weeks back and have been doing some 50lb walks around Carkeek Park lately.  I'm really wanting to get out and do some real hikes soon but not sure when i'll be able to break from house work. Anybody ever gone up to the Hidden Lake Lookout? I'd like to just go up for a day hike. Pretty spectacular views up there. 8 Mile round trip and decent elevation gains.  Winchester is another I'd like to do a day hike on although not a terribly long hike. Park Butte is Another longer one at 7.5 miles round trip.

Wagon wheel is a good one and so is Mt Rose, one of the steepest in the Olympics. Ellinor is a good moderate hike with some great scenery, but its really popular and often over crowded. There's a couple real good leg burners in the Mt Margaret backcountry, the hunters trail is a real killer. We just hiked Marmot pass a couple weeks ago and although just a moderate incline its far enough in for a day hike it really makes it a good one for conditioning, especially with a loaded pack. We're doing Goat lake next, once we get some good weather again.

I'll be doing a weighted ascent of Mclellan Butte in the next couple weeks. Been working weekends lately, but I'm done with that after this week. Anybody want to jump on board for April 25?

I'll hopefully be shooting a turkey's face off that day.

I haven't been hiking as much.  Been lifting a lot lately.  Jump rope at the house has been my cardio.  Need to get out soon.  Wish I was north I would join u.  But just to far to do consistently.

I've been hiking a bit lately. Mostly scouting so I haven't been inviting many people. Let's get a date set where a group of us can run the berry pickers off the side of the trail

If you want to go on the hardest day hike on the Westside, Check out Lake of Angels. I'm an avid hiker and this hike was the hardest hike I've ever done. leg burner.

Mailbox Peak! if you can do mailbox with a full pack your set. Short and steep, and I mean steep.

Granite mountain if you want a longer hike, fewer people, and great elevation.

Pretty sure Mailbox Peak is not accessible right now due to construction/paving on Middle Fork Road.
And it's all switchbacked now since they renovated it, so not as steep as it was.

If you get there early you can park on the side of the road and hike it during the week.  Weekends are wide open.

I may be going up to Klone Lakes up the Wynoochee on Sat 13th, I'll be in a white Suzuki Sidekick. Not to far of a hike but you can catch nice cutthroats once you get there.
