After the huge Okanogan fires the immediate worry was getting the deer through the winter. Fortunately it's been a mild winter and feeding hasn't been a major issue. The Mule Deer Foundation will be planting burned areas in the spring to help improve habitat for the future. The Washington for Wildlife board of directors have approved a plan to help by conducting fund raisers and organizing a list of volunteers to help with planting. 100% of money raised will be used to plant in the Okanogan and the Mule Deer Foundation will match every dolllar we donate. So if someone donates $5 then $10 of seedlings will be planted. Dan McKinley of the Mule Deer Foundation will be organizing the areas to plant and the work days.
Anyone who would like to volunteer a day to help plant this spring please add your name to this topic and feel free to send Dan your name and phone number. dan@muledeer.org
Dan will go down the list and contact possible volunteers each time a day is planned to plant seedlings. Not only will you be helping the deer, it should be a lot of fun getting together with fellow hunters.

WFW's goal is to build a fund and put together a list of volunteers, Dan is the only one who needs your phone/email as he will be the person contacting members when it's time to help plant.

Me +2 to plant, 3 total.

you guys are awesome, it's great to see everyone who wants to help our deer :IBCOOL:

If we get a group maybe we could set up a carpool up that way as well
-
I can help. Probably plus 1.
-
Not that one person makes a difference but weekdays work best for us (3), and as im sure everyone can appreciate, the longer the notice the better.........just saying. ;)

We need to see if we can do a multi day seed and just do a camp. Seed all day and hang out all night....repeat.

Depending on the date and if the camping thing gets set up, I'd be willing to make the multi hour drive to help plant and camp.
-
The mule deer foundation banquet will be Feb 28 in Ellensburg too if I remember correctly . I'm sure Dan can confirm
-
Posted on our facebook page, please feel free to share on your facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HuntingWashington (https://www.facebook.com/HuntingWashington)
Dan will be organizing the work parties and he will be visiting the topics when he gets a chance and will see the suggestions. I'll let him explain how he envisions the work parties. Even if each plant only takes a day members could still plan an overnight camp out.

Count me in, once you figure out a date. A weekend of planting and camping would be awesome! Who else is going to the Mule Deer Foundation Banquet?
-
Tagging for the date(s). We could really make this thing fun :IBCOOL:. F it works out I will be in for at least three (you are welcome kids 8)) and I may bring more...perhaps some of the boys scout troop.

Depending on the date I'm in. It's about a 50/50 chance on me being in town or not so... 1/2 of a volunteer

Wow, you are all awesome for signing up! I will make sure to pass along the info to the local agencies that we've got a workforce ready to go!
I understand lead-time is best, and I will try my hardest to have as much lead-time as possible to let you all know. Sometimes the agency basically calls me the night before and says "oh, by the way, we are doing a planting tomorrow!" I will do my best to avoid that and let you all know as early as possible. We do project days on weekdays and weekends, so there should be opportunity for everyone as these get going. Some projects will be clearing and site prep for seeding where possible, others will be planting plugs by hand, and others may be soil/site work for future projects. They all need boots on the ground, and are all fun to take part in.
I'll pass along the idea of a two-day project with some camping possible overnight and see if they can work that out as well.
For the record, MDF doesn't decide the projects, but we always appreciate when they ask us for our input. What we do mostly is provide the funding and manpower to make these projects possible, and we try to get our $$ to stretch as far as possible, through partners, fundraisers, and outside donations like WFW is planning. This will make it possible for us to do even more work sooner, which is a good thing.
Thanks again to all who have signed up! I will post project announcements on this thread, as well as send out emails to those of you who have sent me your contact info.
One question for all of you: I notice most parts of the state are represented by you all...if there are other habitat projects going on in other parts of the state, would you like me to list them here as well? We do work all the way from the Peninsula to the Idaho border, and everywhere north to south, and we're always looking for more help! If that's of interest, I'll post all projects on this thread as volunteer opportunity. Thanks again to all of you!!
-
Id be interested in other projects for sure. I think you'd be best served with a new thread announcing new opportunities to help.
-
We can definitely start up a new thread for project info. With the first one that comes up, I'll post an announcement on here, and we'll just keep posting them on the same thread as they get scheduled. Thanks for the suggestion, Jackelope, good idea!
-
I would help plus one

Come on, airfare out of Arizona should be peanuts for you, or are you afraid of the cold already, hope to see you there. ;)
-
I try to pitch in for most fundraisers around here, but it would really be fun to be a part of an event. Especially in Okanogan--i've only been there once in my life and that was a rare camping trip as a kid :bash:
I'd love to make it, but the cost of the gas or plane ticket could buy a ton of seedlings. Then again if I drove up, imagine all that warm, green house gas C02 "food" I'd be creating for the new young trees. Al Gore would be proud, no? :chuckle:
-
Sent my contact info to Dan.
Methow web cam ... Looks pretty frosty over there right now.
We're moving the first two weekends of April. And I'm pretty booked until then. It'll be nice to get a break from the home stuff and go plant little seedlings for critters to munch on.

I just bought a new Cabela's bighorn III tent and will be picking it up tomorrow. Could be a great chance to give it a trial run.

Do we have any idea of when a possible date or even a month would be? And can someone local be in charge of finding a large public land area that we could all camp in?
Edit: or private field away from neighbors.

I will touch base with the bios up there and see what they are looking into so far. Plenty of land that could be used for camping, both public and private, and we'll arrange that as project sites are determined. Thanks to all of you for signing up so far. We have more projects coming up all over the East side of the state, and Klickitat too, so let me know if any of you would like info on specific areas of the state near you, too.
In the meantime, I'll get some Okanogan info and pass it on to all of you as soon as I get it. Thanks again!

Tagging for more info. Hopefully its after 20 opens although that might not be as much of an issue this year.
-
I can help out as well. 1 chikd for sure and depending on day possibly another adult.

Finally got some info from the Bios up in Okanogan County, and there will be a project coming up on the first weekend of August, for weed identification, in order to do some eradication in preparation for fall planting. Anyone interested can show up to help, or send me an email for more info or to let me know you plan on coming to help out. I've copied the text of the letter below to explain some of what will be going on. I know it's short notice, but hopefully some of you can make it. The are also a couple maps he has, and I can email those to any of you who would like them. Thanks

Thank you very much for your interest in protecting Mule Deer habitats. Invasive weeds are one of the top threats we face as land managers and your efforts to survey for noxious weeds on our wildlife areas will help us greatly and help achieve or our agencies mission:
To preserve, protect and perpetuate fish, wildlife and ecosystems while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational and commercial opportunities.
Below are the specifics to the weed surveying event.
WHERE – North Summit Sno-Park near Loup Loup Pass (directions below)
WHEN -- Saturday August 1st @ 8am.
WHAT TO BRING - GPS Unit(s)
Hiking Boots
Long Pants & Shirt
Sunscreen & Bug Repellent
Once gathered at the Sno-Park we’ll perform a brief overview of the day – weed identification, GPS use, data sharing and a couple safety issues. After that, we’ll each travel to a wildlife area of your choosing that was affected by the Carlton Complex Fires last year. Each of you will be responsible for your own lodging. There are numerous places both in the Okanogan and Methow Valleys. Loup Loup and JR Campgrounds are both USFS campgrounds and within a mile of the meeting location. Leader Lake (DNR) and Buzzard Lake (WDFW) are also close by. We can provide you with more suggestions if you’d like.
Please contact me if you have questions. We look forward to working with each of you. Thank you!

Can people bring ATV's since they're legal to ride ?
-
Good question. I don't know the answer to that, but I'll ask them, as it would probably depend on the area being covered.
