Title: Slide Ridge Buck Permit
Post by: sagerat on September 12, 2007, 07:49:19 PM
Well finally a little luck came my way and I drew a Slide Ridge A permit this year!! Now, I'm more use to hunting the Entiat but went for Slide 1st choice because of the fewer # of tags. Any of you ever drawn this tag? I'm heading up there in about a week to completely look over the unit and come up with a few starting points and areas. I plan on spending the majority of the season there with the goal of a buck in the 170" class or better. Any advice you guys could throw my way would really help!

I agree with the 2 posts above, I have hunted there with no snow= no bucks (big bucks) 25 mile cr. is a great place to start.

I'll be there. Just got home from a scouting trip, seriously rugged country! I'm going to jam in a camp between 25 mile creek and grouse mtn. somewhere, depending on weather conditions. Hope we get some snow.

You might think of trying it from a boat.you can access some graet country and end up by yourself.Ive heard you need a good size boat it can get a little rough at times......

Not a little rough, a lot rough. That lake can be a killer. We have hunted up lake, and nowhere to tie up a boat, rogue waves over 5 feet. No kidding. Be careful.

I have tried it from a 12' boat, not a good idea. When that afternoon wind kicks up it gets really rough. Also its a hard go up to get up the the hill. Lots of rock face you can't get up. You will be by yourself though.  :hello:

A 12' boat on that lake is a coffin. No BS, we had a rogue wave over five foot curl go over the top of our 21footer, and nearly swamp us. If the boat had an open bow, I would not be typing this reply...Dual bilge pumps is also a good idea on this lake.

I don't think I have ever been so scared in my life, no joke. Its OK in the morning but when the wind comes down the lake it looks like the bar at Ilwaco. I was by myself and barley made it to one of the little dock/ campsites along the lake and stayed the night. There was an older couple in a 21' bayliner who said I was crazy and then said he wouldn't go out in that. It was one of the dumber things I have ever tried. I was about 22 at the time.

Ive heard the Lady of the Lake will drop you off anywere you want also. But ive heard no propane or gas is allowed aboard either.but  im not sure

I don't think the lady makes stops for passengers, but I sure could be wrong.  Thats a big boat and not real easy for it to dock just anywhwere.  There aren't alot of places to land a boat but definately possible.  Take the advice though, unless you are a decent seaman, be careful of that lake.  The way it funnels wind and gets narrow etc.  It can be as nasty as the open sea.  VERY dangerous, and that time of year there is no second chance.  You have an awesome tag and I wish you luck.  There are a couple of boys on here that hunt Slide all of the time.

The lady will drop you dock side, I think rock side. We have friends with a cabin uplake, rock crib style landing. Lady stops there. This area is unique for sure. You are definitely on your own on this hunt. No one around to bail you out if things go bad. Recent fires have surely loosened rock, you may want a hardhat!

Well, that all sounds exciting enough but I will not be accessing via the lake. I'll be up the road system trying to wear out my Swarovskis. Hopefully I'll see plenty of deer. Not really sure what to expect as far as numbers of animals. Sure would be nice if someone on here had drawn this tag before and could offer up some of there experience. I'm sure weather plays a HUGE part in the success here...

Get up there sometime soon and drive the roads and get the lay of the land... that will be your biggest tool is knowing what roads go where, how high/low, road blocks...etc  There are some resident deer in there as well but if you hit the migration you'll be seeing rediculous amounts of deer.  However if you pass on a buck realize that you will likely NEVER see him again as a lot of that area is migration route instead of actual winter range...  Good Luck!

Thanks. I've already been up there and driven all the roads. I'm sure it will all look different with snow on the ground, at least I'll have a decent handle on it. I can't wait for November!

Lots of snow right now at 4000 ft... could push deer down early but I'm guessing they'll stay in the deep timber till they're forced onto the winter range for the rut...  Good luck!

Slide Ridge has some great roadless backcountry at the northwestern end.  There is also some good road access on 25 mile Creek from Chelan to Entiat.  Preston Creek off the Entiat also gives some good access.  Where you hunt is really going to depend upon snow depth.  Try staying a little above the snowline for the better bucks.

george, If I remember right the preston creek drainage is not in the slide ridge unit.  However if you hike in a ways you can reach the unit.  Not sure if that is what you meant just trying to give ya a heads up.  I had the tag last year, so you guys with the tag send me a pm if ya have some questions.  Good luck, should be a good year!

Yep, coupled with 8 days for bull elk in September, 4-5 days for deer, and a 5 day high hunt guiding for work...  It's been a rough fall...  :IBCOOL:
This fall is my "senior present" to myself after graduating last spring so no Mexico or Senior Trip for me, I'm just hunting my ass off.  Can't wait!
