Anyone ever go to the Sun River Game Range down in Augusta MT.. ?????Me and a couple buddy's went to the opener last year. We had a blast.. Learning experience too.. Will be there again this year.. Some monster bonez down there... Unfortunately we didn't pick any of those up!.... Beautiful place too.. I'll try to dig up more pics

I've seen a wardens show on it. We shed hunt that area but have not done that race yet.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
-
Never did that but I lived there for a couple of seasons. It is a beautiful place though for sure. I miss it there every day. Good luck.
-
Lived in Helena for a couple years & was near that area but didn't know of this spot - such nice
country. Some good sheds there also!
-
The madness begins in one more week! Can't wait... Got me a better spot in line this year! Anyone else goin?!?!?

I think antlerhound was on that episode!
Have a good time man, wish I was joining you, but I just can't swing it this year!

I'm ready for the race!

Sun river 2016. Whew hoo
-
I hope you have a good time. Looks like a good spot to,spend a couple vacation days
-
I won't be going this year due to a first kid being due April 28th. Had fun last year even though the weather sucked and there werent much for sheds to be picked up.
-
The property to the west of the road on the way out of Augusta is part of my cousin's ranch. The ranch HQ is on the east side of town, they have some irrigated hay meadows a bit of grazing up there. They have a lot more property down towards Bowman's. Some right good rattle snake hunting south of town.
-
I worked on the Lazy A C ranch, They boarder the southern portion of the game range from nilan reservoir to the national forest. When I left we (4 people) had 2 piles of antlers that were 5x12x4 feet high, if you know where to look you can find dinosaur bones also.
I've heard that the gas companys have developed the area is that true??
-
Maverick is right... the weather was uncooperative last year to say the least.. Sheds were already picked over by someone who didn't wana follow rules.... But it was good time... I'll be there again this year... Here's a bone a buddy picked down there last year...
-
Big ranches up there, Krone, Sun River and the Broken O run a lot of cattle. The Broken O is the biggest irrigated ranch in the US at times depending on how other spreads expand and contract.

I love that little store in town . I almost bought a .257 wby one year . we pack in past the ressivor
-
He is a pretty nice guy. Decent prices and great selection. His kid runs another store he has, I think it is in Fla. That taxi will assist you on sheep anywhere in the world for free if you get drawn. He is a "go to" guy on sheep. Ronnie Jenkins.
Ron Jenkins of Augusta, a taxidermist and bighorn fancier, grew up in the
Augusta area; his family had a cabin in HD 424. He estimates he has been on
more than 100 sheep hunts throughout North America and he loves sheep hunting
so much, he guides friends who have sheep tags.

I have a couple of questions about this game range
as an out of stater traveling over to shed hunt on 5/15
curious and may combine my idaho deer scouting trip with a side trip to the game range
1) Do you need anything as far as a permit or pass to get in and dry camp ?
2) ATV restrictions passes or permits ?
-
If I remember right we didn't need anything. Atvs just need to stay on the road. Really anywhere youcan get with one you can usually get a truck there. There is one area that going down hill u woudlnt attempt if its been pouring rain like last year. I gave up and turned around. Still not sire how I didn't get stuck.
-
Thanks
I may need to do that shed hunt just for grins
I'll leave the ATV home then
-
It's beautiful country. Tons of people. Even talked to a guy that came up all the way from Pennsylvania.
-
My mom calls it a rock pile, she was born on a ranch in Chateau. I call it heaven. There are a lot of things she is wrong about re: Montana.

-

-
changed my mind
got home last night from scouting idaho and it was still 300 miles to go to sun river
alone was not too much fun after about 4 days
-
Well I'd say I'll see you there but.. Changing it up this year.. Going to the Blackfoot... About 100 miles closer... But if we don't like what we see Sunday we'll head for Sun River... Good luck to all! Hope you find brown town!!
-
i got a question for u antlerhound i have never been to sun river before .were would be a good place to camp ? do people camp at the gate ?
-
Before they open the gate you'll camp along the road. After they open the gate you'll shed hunt and then when you feel like it move your camp on to wherever you want. Its beautiful country over there and you're going to love it! As long as the wolves didn't push the herds out like last year you should find some sheds.
-
