Post by: huntnphool on December 27, 2008, 09:21:18 PM
Cabin fever was setting in so Pope and I met Slider this morning for a little R&R, here is one of the pics I got.

Thats Pope in the picture, at that point he was about 30 yards. I had taken a bunch at 20-30 yards before they moved toward Pope, then I went down and swung around to get the pic of him shooting them.

Thats the biggest ram I've seen this year.  Just not finding any in the Clemans or Wenas that measure up to it.  Yep thats a pretty close from behind.  Should have grabbed the tail to see what happened next.  I know Pope has been run back to the truck by a moose, a bear and I think an elk this year, but not a sheep.  Glad you guys were out having fun.

I have never been up to the swakane. But by looking at your guys pics. Its seems that they are bigger up there. :dunno:. Maybe its because there is only 1 tag up there. And 8 in clemans :yike:.

I just got off the phone with Pope and after carefully looking over our pics we both think the big guy is actually in the upper 170's. Pope is sending a couple of the pics to some guys that really know rams well to get their opinions, looks like we may be making plans to spend an entire day shooting him. If we do I will post a bunch more of him.

Thats cool!   I honestly don't know rams at all in regards to score.  About the only animal I wouldn't even have a guess on.  I just know it when they look big.  Its not the same ram I shot earlier is it?  The one withthe chipped horn.

Just got home from a quick run over to get some more pics of the big guy. I was lucky enough to find him with enough light left to get a few pics. I will have to fix a glitch in my computer before I can get some better pics up for you guys but here is one I got loaded before having the problem. Slider, Pope and I got a bunch yesterday as well that we all will post in time, lots of resizing to do :bash: I took 250 yesterday and another 200 or so today so I'm hoping a couple of them turn out okay.

I wasn't able to get any closer than about 120-150 yards without them busting me so I didnt get any "headshots" just full body shots, hope you enjoy them.

Just got the glitch figured out and pics loaded. Here is another of the big guy and his little buddy. Not too sharp but keep in mind I was 150 yards out on a very overcast 14 degree day with about 15 minutes of shooting light left. Not too bad under those conditions.

Thanks Sky, I have hundreds of pics but it doesn't seem as though many poeple want to see them. I look back after a few days and the pics have 1 or 2 views :dunno:

What people don't understand is that its unlikely they will ever see a Cali this big again in their lifetime and its right here in our backyard. Of course we can't divulge his location but I can share the pics so everyone can see him.

Yep, this one took about 5 minutes real time. Find the pic I want, open in CS3, crop to liking, make tone/color/image adjustments, add huntnphool, resize to fit on HuntWa and save to picture folder. All this so you guys can look at horn porn :chuckle:

Again, keep in mind that you get a better quality pic to view if you click on the pic itself ;)

Another of that big one. Sorry the quality is so bad but sometimes you have to take what your given and be happy with it, I was just happy to have found him again.

M-Ray and I saw a ram head at the show today that someone dropped off to be scored, the sheet said 175 and change which is a really good ram for here. This guy is noticeably bigger than the one we were looking at leaving me to believe that we were close on our guesses in the mid 180's

That ram is a friggin' beast! Wow. I think you're right on with the score.

Yep he is quite a bit bigger than the one at the show ... I'm sticking with my original estimate which I told Shawn originally over 180 maybe not quite to the 185 mark though, but at any rate a monster!!!

I'm not sure on the width.  It just does not come into the score so I rarely deal with that measurement.  I'm more interested in figuring out what his 3rd quarter measurement is.  I think the bases are 15".  I think the length is close to 40".  If the 3rd quarter measurement is 10"...he is a bruiser.  Wish we had a few scorers on this site sometimes.  I'm no expert.

I also looked at the 174 or 175 Ram at the show from MT Hull and this Ram is noticibly bigger!!! He has to be mid 180's!!! SCI World Record is 186 3/8 and he will be there next year for sure!!!

I can't believe that's a California bighorn! I agree Slider, that thing will surely be the new SCI World record.

I'm sure we will know exactlymwhat he scores next year.  But....Can the raffle and Gov tag hunt a unit that doesn't have any tags available?

No they cant so the only danger should be cats and loose lips that the natives pay attention to. >:(

For sheep, goat and moose the gov and raffle tag holders can only hunt a unit that has 2 or more tags.
