I like the Leupold VX-II in a 3-9x40. Great scope for the money and made in the USA.

Cabelas has a sale currently on a Nikon 3-9x40 Buckmaster scope for $129. For the money, that's a good value.

I did a quick check and the cheapest I could find it elsewhere was on Amazon for $219.

FYI, VX-II is a discontinued line as of 2012. It was replaced by the VX-2 line. Similar but some minor differences. You might can find some deals on a VX-II scope since it's discontinued.

What kind of 25-06, and does it have rings and a base?

I like the way your Dad thinks BTW.

Very good scope. As good as the Leupolds mentioned in my opinion. Ive had one on a Ruger 7mm for many years with no issues. Good clear scope. Gathers as much light as the mentioned Leupys

Here's a good scope that's made in the USA and $50 under your budget:

I second the redfield revolution.  They are made in USA and I have two and have had no problems with them.  They are made by Leupold.

Nikon makes a good scope. Can also look at Redfield (aka cheap Leupold) and then a Leupold VX2 or even VX1. The new VX2s are supposed to be on par with the old VXIIIs and the new VX1 is supposed to be about the same as the old VXIIs.

Another vote for Nikons here.  I have a prostaff that is my favorite scope.  On Amazon you can get them very slightly used for the mid 100s.

Nikon warranty is great...You just don't have to use it as much as Leopold.
Burris is another good choice.

I've been looking at scopes for my AR and came across this site.  Some good comparison info.  Be sure to check the eye relief amounts.

Excellent warranty and service.  Warranty transfer to new owner as well if used.

I've purchased a couple Nikon M-223's for AR's.  Same great quality as my Moanrch's and Monarch 3's.

I just purchased a Nikon Prostaff 5, 4-12 zoom with 40mm objective.  I love the glass its a great value.  Spent less than $250.00.  I got the BDC reticle, but I dont recommend it as a starter scope.  Its very "busy."  Get the standard reticle, learn to shoot and after a few hunting seasons and a larger budget you'll want to graduate to better scope anyways. It's a disease and a good one too.

But for $250 you'll be extremely happy with the scope and it will serve you for many years to come.
