Title: semi auto mossberg shotgun not firing 2nd shell?
Post by: grousetracker on February 24, 2015, 09:35:57 PM
mossberg 935 semi auto shotgun will extract the first shell, pick up the 2nd shell and when you squeeze the trigger it clicks and doesnt go off, I noticed a dented primer on 1 shell and couldnt find any marks on any others. I broke the gun all the way down, including the bolt and trigger assembly and cleaned and tested all the springs all is tight but the gun still will not fire the 2nd shell.
I am at a loss any ideas would be great. thanks

Firing pin worn?

Firing pin spring too tight”?   I remember reading something about excessively strong firing pin springs in some Mossberg models.

Bolt not going all the way forward?

I am betting the bolt is not closing all the way.  That's the only glaring cause I can see.
If you manually cycle the bolt and it fires it seems like this is the cause.

That would be my guess as well. Does it do it with different brands of shells too? I have an older beretta that wouldn't cycle one brand but did fine with everything else

The honest truth is there is nothing good about a Mossberg. I've owned 3 and at one time or another have felt like throwing them in the river.

With a semi-auto you need to clean very frequently becuase the burnt powder tends to corrode and gum things up very fast..good luck

I am not familiar with Mossbergs at all, but one issue that I had with an auto was the spring (recoil tube?) in the stock. It would get rusty and full of dirt, when a shot was fired it was the cause of the next round or third round not firing. I replaced everything from firing pins, to springs, worked on the slides, none of it worked. It was that spring in the stock. This is what you replace when you install a Sure Cycle system. I have no idea if that is your issue- but worth a look?

:yeah:  had a 935 for about 5 years never had an issue with it. Needed money so I sold it been kicking myself for it but needed the money more than a shotgun plus I have 3 other shotguns.

What size shells are you shooting?  The 935's are supposed to shoot 3" or larger shells.  If your shooting 2 3/4" shells that could be the reason it's not completing the cycle in order to fire the follow on shot.

Anyway, it's a thought on the situation.

I use 3'' shells and have tried 5-6 different shells and thats not the issue, but the buffer spring in the stock interests me. I will have to remove that and take a look, I have no idea how to check if the bolt isn't going all the way forward.

I know you have done so, take the bolt assembly out and clean it  with carb cleaner. That will remove all the carbon buildup than look at the Bolt Buffer and see if it is damaged or missing. Remember Carb Cleaner is an autoloaders friend, from trigger groups, receivers and bold return tubes if your gun has one (goes into the stock).  :twocents: :twocents:

I have cleaned the h*** out of it and think the firing pin isnt being struck correct, I can see the back of the firing pin and I swear the pin never moved.

I'll be at the Evergreen Sportsman on the 29th of March if you want me to look at it  :twocents:
