I imagine they have to be out.  Or very close. Seems like they move just after the sage rats and they have been out for 3+ weeks.

I personally think its still cold for them, even if its a little warm during a day, but cold at nights.

Used to do that to kill time during the work day back in the Tri-Cities.  We were hunting them from May through August.  We would go out in the sage brush around a farm we worked on right at day break and watch for them to be moving around.  Killed a few really nice ones.  Make yourself a snake whip(no 9 wire works great) and get a shovel.  You can use the whip to smack them and it breaks their back and then the shovel to decapitate them. We always wore protective chaps just incase. If you wanna hunt them during the day, use the shovel and snake whip to poke around in rock piles or any place that they could hide and stay cool, listen for the rattle and try to get them to come out.  It was a rush, I hate snakes, but man did your adrenaline get going when you found a few of them in some rocks and they were coming out in front and behind you!  Giving me chills now thinking about it lol

Do you need any type of permit for rattlesnakes? I would imagine there wouldn't be a problem killing one if you run into it, but this is WA, and common sense does not always match up with regs.

Thats funny
Not looking for shovel action, want to mount one for sure
Mainly just want to do it and eat them
Its a long drive to go out that way for 1 or even no snakes, would like to find a mother lode
Do farmers/ranchers allow snake hunters on land?
Maybe some out there can do some checking into it for me  (AND U)

well if you are real gutsy get a needle and syringe and inject 3 - 5 cc's of acetone at the base of the head.  recommend 16 gauge or bigger needle

Funny when I lived in AZ we always wanted to avoid them, Up here people want to go find them   :)

I always did enjoy seeing them at a safe distance but liked to hike in the winter, better temps and less snakes.

I've been told the same thing, that they taste similar to chicken but the meat is a bit chewier.  I've never eaten any so I'm not sure if I was getting BS'd or if that is really true.  For those that have honestly eaten rattlesnake, is this true?

Always wanted to at least try some, just never had the opportunity.  Figured since I've tried sheep and calf nuts :yike: I can try a little rattlesnake.

Pretty sure I don't have the experience dealing with rattlesnakes to take them alive. Either I'm going to try to shoot them or hit them with a nice long stick.

Usually first of April! We get a warm 70 degree day they will be out! Save your guns because you will be at the bottom of rock faces and can't shoot! Rake and axe work best if you don't want to use some big tongs to get em alive!

I caught one and pulled the fangs out with a pair of pliers. took it home and put it on the front lawn and when my lab picked it up I shocked him in the butt with a cow shocker.  he never went close to a snake again.   the new fangs drop into place sometime except he died.   mike w

I don't know much about the area, to be honest, besides what reading I've done here on Hunt WA and other places online.

I'm going to look at a place to possibly rent or buy between Eloika Lake and Deer Park, so I was going to do some research on spots not only around there but on the way there.

Open to ideas...

Saw this when I went to Eloika for some fishing. It looked like there was a lot of private land, and not much for the public access. Not sure about the rattlesnake population either. I plan on trying out the Inland Paper Company land on Mt. Spokane for turkey, but that requires a $10 day use permit, or a $40 annual permit per person. You are more than welcome to try and knock down some birds up there with me if you want, and you get your own permit. I have mine already. I have not seen any snakes up there through bear season and cutting wood all last summer.

Almost rolled a pickup once because I was having a good old time swerving all over the canyon road, running over rattlers  :chuckle:

Love this response..   :yike: leave them alone, they are good - they kill mice!  Yeah bro everything kills mice, including other mice.

People say leave rattlers alone because they eat mice.  Then they say that bullsnakes are good to have around because they eat rattlers  :dunno:  If it's my property, I'm killing every snake I can legally kill  and getting a cat to take care of the mice.

Well, that makes two of us. Three if you include my wife. She's a great shot, though. Turkeys can't be harder to hit than clays.

We're going to get into the area Friday afternoon it looks like. I'm going to see about access permits tonight and will let you know.

I'm pretty sure earlier in this thread there was mention of a few different hotspots for rattlers. I'll look into those and see what's nearby to the turkey spot, if any are.

As long as we've got a nice, tight choke and 3" shells with #4 shot and have patterned the shotgun and practiced with it, we should be OK, yes?

None of that will help us find the birds, but if we do find them, it seems like we have a good chance?

I don't think we'll have a problem as long as we know our limits, and the limits of our guns. The hard/fun part will be finding birds.

The one in Kittitas county, just south of I-90
Cool, thank you! I wasn't able to get out last weekend after turkeys and rattlers.

Last week was kind of a bad week - my grandpa died and a huge unexpected tax bill showed up two days apart.

This week is already better, though! Now we've got a place to go after snakes. :)

Sorry to hear that man. Good luck. I got a new job, so my availability just disappeared.

Thanks. I'm mostly sad for my dad (whose dad it is that died) - he's having a rough time of it. Was supposed to visit me but the day before he was coming he got the call that he needed to be with his dad. Life is short.

Congrats on the job! If you have to be unavailable, that's a happy reason!

Were you able to get a turkey last week?

No luck on the turkey. I saw some sign, but I couldn't get one to answer me.

Sorry again about your grandpa, and for your dad.

Any of you snake hunters been out much or had much success??

I'm no fan of rattlesnakes but I enjoy seeing the pics of the dead ones.

We killed one about two weeks ago up in Slide Ridge.

I was just down in Centerville for the home with heroes 5K Run and Gun and ran up on one in the campground. Took his head off with a SOG hatchet that one of my friends won in the raffle.

That's a nice one. Lots of snakes at the Feathers climbing area by the Gorge Ampatheater. Plus you get to scare all the hippies that are out there rock climbing. I have caught, shot, stomped, whacked lots of snakes in my life and ate a few as well. Not to bad, just not that good either. I killed one this Saturday while pulling Rye with a friend.

Man, that hatchet handle looks mighty SHORT! You must have been lightning fast with that blade.

I still have not made it out to try and whack rattlers yet. I need to get on that. I want to make a few hat bands, and eat some.

Netcoyote- I actually threw a meat cleaver at it first and clocked it square on the head dazing it then moved in and chopped it off.
