Should have cell coverage on the ridge tops, so we expect updates daily.

Rotten bustard! Had plans for that area this spring.
Good luck, keep us updated when you can.

Ya our route we have planned should keep us in cell service nearly 100% of the time.
Also will be testing out the Neverded cell charger. Should get me 3 full charges.

Cabela's or Amazon is where I've bought it.
It's about the best tick repellent out there. Make sure you read the directions ahead of time.
It doesn't work like "normal" bug spray re: the application of it.

Thanks for the info guys, I bought 2 24oz spray bottles a bit ago from amazon for around 34.00. I sure hope it works even a little, half the amount of tic's is worth the money.

I hunted 5 days there in 2013. Spent every day from sun up to dark on the mountain, even took naps on the ground and never found a tick one on me :dunno:. It was in mid may when I went so maybe it was a good year for no ticks?

Last year we spent 3 days over memorial doing a loop and between three guys we picked off a bare minimum of 50 each.

Better safe than sorry!
I pulled one off of me from the blues on a sunday and ended up in the emergency room by Wednesday night. I lost 25#'s in 6 days and it took over a month to get back to normal. I still haven't been able to put that weight back on either.
I use the permethrine spray from Sawyer now and it seems to work.

Did they diagnose you with anything?
-
They tested for spotted fever and lymes disease and those were both negative, so they drew more blood and apparently messed those tests up and by then i was getting better so it was too late to test for anything else.
What I do know is that I was severely dehydrated and my white blood cell count was undetectable. The infectious diseases doctor told me that I was extremely lucky that I didn't catch anything else during this.
To get back on track you should have a blast in the Wehaha. We had 2 tags for in there last year and the tag holders missed 3 bears.

100 yds to 400 yds. If you're patient you shouldn't have a problem getting within a couple hundred on some opportunities, but it seemed like there were some instances that you would be hard pressed to get within 1000 because of the terrain.
I've only been in there a couple of times though.
Have you ever looked at the harvest statistics for the blue mountains spring bear tags? It's kind of ridiculous that they don't give out more tags just based on that.

We probably saw each other, I was also there last year on memorial weekend. That was the most guys I've ever seen in that area hunting bears ever, I've been there 4 times. We had a contest on who got the most ticks on them, 2 of us ended up with 12 for the weekend, my other buddy only had 11 but his was dug in his back. He won! You guys that never get ticks, you just very lucky, they have always been bad every time I've been there. They really don't bug me that much, you get used to them but I just don't want any diseases.

Played around up around Godman and where the 64/46 meet. Still lots of snow up in there. All the northern exposures had several feet of snow in many places. A motivated guy could probably drive across the top, but I didn't chance it. Wasn't much greened up up that high. Only bear sign seen was down below the ski slopes at the lower elevations.
Hit snow right past blue wood on the 64, and just before Godman on the 46.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F04%2F19%2F40ad3bfba473401424d92a4b6ad4fffb.jpg&hash=5bb63c5957efea29cea23dc8ae189500bb32e05d)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F04%2F19%2F93ebba7e782907dda7198ac4f3b6028a.jpg&hash=8acd2dc66a752144f4620af3b60fbdd31f535875)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F04%2F19%2Fbac57380ce7a489e2c38f58de92663db.jpg&hash=ebaf42dbe7a9256c93e236f7b6c1f8e59cd18e9d)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F04%2F19%2Fdedab5122d5a9af7f093fe9382bff02d.jpg&hash=341bbf42a53ddcee7475a29b9f14f9595c83f542)

Awesome hunt, been following it and will continue to.
Just an FYI, there is a decent storm brewing in the tricities and looks to be traveling ESE. Haven't looked at the radar, just the sky from the back yard in pasco. Could be more popping up elsewhere. Moderate wind, a wall of rain thunder and few sky to ground lightening.

Snowstorm finally cleared off and the sun is shining. Deer and elk are out, just waiting on Yogi.

I've packed a bear out of that miserable bleeping canyon. There's lots of things better than that, but not much that is more rewarding than once you get the last load to the top.
Keep at it Silk!

Oh I know how miserable it is, I guess I worded it wrong. And you said what I really meant, not much more rewarding when you put that last load down. Not a feat many want to take, but I'd take it every year if I could.

Silk, alone in the Wilderness is great. You'll be fine, even after you shoot that big tawny bruin.

Love that fire photo, I also like doing the alone trips for the most part. Just gets a little boring at night, I usually get about 12 hours of sleep. Bust a pig silk!

:yeah:
The contrast of the deep cobalt blue with the white sparks from the fire is very nice. FillTheFreezer's placement of the subject off-center is also very nicely done. Excellent in-field photography.

Well the follies continue. I make the ridge in 2.5 hours and tank up on water. I work y way down the ridge towards camp and a cinnamon is feeding across the top. No canyons, no brutal pack outs, and it's ten minutes in. I take my pack off and lay probe, slam the range finder, 418.
Rack a shell in, take a few deep breaths...let out, let crosshairs settle just over the top of the back and....click. I jack the shell out and Mr. Bear is starting to realize something is up, he's no longer feeding but starting to walk towards timber.
I realize the bolt wasn't fully engaged, range again, I'm running out time, one more window.
Boom!
Missed.
He goes tearing off down the meadow and into the timber. I spent an hour looking for blood, smell, following tracks out, nothing.
I may, for some reason not be able to hit them, but finding them seems to be no problem...
The hunt continues.

Silk, I disagree with you: There are no follies in your Weneha 2015 hunt. There is a reason that only 3 to 5 tags out of the 45 awarded ever get filled during the Spring. Weneha is a darned difficult hunt. Because you have cell phone service, we are able to participate blow-by-blow, and we can assure you that your effort is second to none. As you well know, success in hunting is directly proportional to the hours spent in the field: You are doing your part, keep at it until the clock runs out.
Stellar performance thus far!
-
Could you see where you hit? Keep after 'em!
-
Could you see where you hit? Keep after 'em!
granted im not there anymore, but i was on the glass last round.
the ground is mostly decomposed granite in there and seems to soak up the hit without much more than a pftt of dirt. very difficult to call.
-
Third times a charm.
-
You shoot much at ranges over 400? Sounds like you may need to work on it a bit. Not trying to sound like a dick but once you get out past 3-400or so you really need to know what your rifle and load are doing. Little things start to make big differences . You using a scope with turrets or just holding over?
-
I have and did a good tuneup prior to season. The major problem was that I blew all the time I had relaxing expecting that first shot to send. When it clicked and I realized my bolt wasn't down, I had pretty minimal time to reset.

I don't know what he's shooting but if he has a 250 yard zero, then many of the faster rifles would be 15" low at 400 and would do inside of 4" above and below line of sight out to 300.
Have you confirmed your zero since the season started? Since you already fired a shot you might want to send another for confidence since the areas disturbed.
Yeah, I'm desk jockeying. Sorry. :sry:
Sending you a PM.

sounds to me like the shot was rushed(because it had to be) you probably pulled the trigger harder than usual and just plain missed. Doesnt hurt to check gun if you think you wont be spooking to much but probably not needed. Good luck ive been anxiously watching the thread for when you do get one!

Trying a different tactic this morning and running ridges to see some new country.
Also, may have identified the main culprit yesterday. When I ranged the bear, I think it got the trees behind him, adding about forty-fifty yards, which is anywhere from 5-8 inch difference....
Oh well.
I've seen four bucks, 6 does and a cow this morning. It's about that time though!
Also, no issues solo, I fell right asleep and slept pretty good since Scott wasn't there sawing logs... :)

Cubs are better anyways! Less to pack out... Less to eat... And a smaller taxi bill!!! Win win win.
Good luck!

My boys tag will go on the first legal one he can get to. My tag I'm looking for cinnamon or blonde if anything. Not like I need 2 bears in the freezer and I have a black one on the wall already.
I'm just waiting for Silk to stop firing warning shots, get serious and post up a grip-n-grin with yogi for us.

Don't let the presence of elk make you think that there is no bear in the area. I watched a bear last elk season walk 50 yards or so from elk and deer....they didn't seem to care, and I'm sure they saw him.
Keep at it and enjoy the hunt!

This past year I was following a bear in September trying to catch up and he lead me straight into a herd of elk. One of which took an arrow. I thought the bear was ripping a stump apart but it was a bull raking a tree.
Elk and bears coexist

I never thought of that---what a great strategy. If the sound of bears crashing through the woods doesn't affect the elk, then you crashing through the woods after the bear should also be true. (I know, somebody will chirp in that bears are really quiet movers.) I don't know if I will ever be in that position, but this is good to know.

Off the grid? No action today or you run to Pomeroy for beer?

There's barely any beer in pomeroy. Kinda like elk. Few and far between.

Hope you connect on one...I was in Wenaha E last fall and bear EVERYWHERE. I was seeing 5-6 per day...but we were elk hunting.

Been pretty quiet for awhile! Either the phone went dead or the wenaha wolves moved in?

There was plenty of beer there when I was there last summer. What are you talking about, did the town go dry? :chuckle:

Yea I think fone's dead. Probably left it on listening to itunes Rap all night to block out the wolves howling.......
-
He's probably packing one out of a hell hole!
-
Phones not dead, just finished trying to go after a GIANT blonde. He was about 3 miles by the crow fly. We spent about two hours working a couple miles around and down a ridge and finally got cliffed out pretty hard. We left a spotter back up top, and he disappeared about thirty minutes after we started into the timber, and presumably back to the crick bottom. Our original estimate of two hours to make the other ridge was grossly underestimated. Every time I think o realize how big this country is, I'm quickly reminded I don't know sheet.
On the plus side, we found some stellar draws to glass of i had five more days...
Alas this is the last one. Unless I can get clearance from wife for another long weekend.

Silk, sounds like you had a pretty cool experience and made some good memories. Most hunters only dream of doing the kind of hunt you just did. Hunting the Blues is no joke, especially the way you tackled it. There's a reason I use the Wenaha as a shakedown before going into "the church". Looking forward to reading more about your lessons learned and equipment reviews.
-
On the Wenaha: Love it. This place has a wildness that is intoxicating. The "established" trails are primitive in nature. I must have rolled my ankle about 25 times over the course of the week thanks to the rocks everywhere. Chasing after bears down ridges that turned into basic rock climbing with a 30 lb pack left me sweating outside my comfort zone.
While chasing that giant blonde yesterday, we got to a point where I had to swing my leg around, and time the weight shift of my pack to my next hand hold. The fall wouldn't have likely killed me, but it didn't look pleasant, and very likely would have ended up a hurting unit. There were ridges and spots like this everywhere, it was awesome.
This wilderness being 7 hours from Seattle sees significantly less traffic then most of the other wildernesses in this state and it shows. There was countless animals to glass and for the most part they didn't seem overly afraid of people. I would love to draw an elk tag in there someday.
The Bears: We saw 8 bears over the trip, 5 blacks, 2 cinnamons, 1 blonde. I can't stop thinking about that blonde, regardless of the two mess-ups. This bear was giant. But it ended up being an insane adventure to get to his meadow we saw him in. Likely would have been 6 hours one way...at the least. He would have been worth it if I think getting over there would have netted a chance. But he disappeared into a stand of timber that led to 5 different drainages. That country is big. Not to mention 6 hours could have turned into 8 one way if we maybe encountered some dead fall (likely).
Gear: Didn't have a lot of new gear this trip, but what I did have was pretty good. I switched to the Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Lock poles, and they were much more rigid then my previous Black Diamonds, which was necessary on this trip. I also debated heavily on whether or not to carry a camp knife.
I finally got sick of digging my Havalon out everytime I needed to cut something. I had some extra cash available and ordered a custom Benchmade Griptillian and it worked as intended, and I will continue to carry a camp knife going forward.
Not really "gear," but I'm finally VERY happy with my food layout. I was sick of, after 3 seasons trying to eat the chalk of the protein bars. I adjusted my food intake to the following:
Breakfast and Snacks: 1.5 oz chocolate covered coffee beans, Nutri Grain Breakfast bar, 2 candy bars (one sweet one chocolate), orchards bar, ritz cheese cracker pack.
Lunch: Either a Butthole Sandwhich (Bagel, peanut butter, 3 slices of bacon, honey), or 2 Tortillas with 1 cheese stick, 4 slickes of salami, and 14 slices of pepperoni.
Dinner: I switched from Mountain House to Hawk Vittles, and I must say, this was the "WIN" of the trip for me. Hawk Vittles while having some quirks, far surpassed MH for me. The calories for many of the items BLOWS away MH, for example the lasagna is 900 calories and 49G of protein. I didn't feel as full as MH, but I also didn't feel bloated with sodium. The numbers are better, and I felt better after eating it day after day. I repackaged all of mine into ziplock bags from the vacuum sealed bags they came in (use the thick freezer ones), and next time I'll add some garlic salt, pepper, cayenne, etc to the ones that needed it. I'd recommend saving an extra zip lock for the linguini or spaghetti as the noodles poked both through the vacuum seal and the freezer zip lock necessitating a pre cook replacement.
On Going SOLO: I loved it. Never felt lonely or scared. It was a bit of a surreal experience being that alone, and having that extreme quietness encompassing you. But as I told Scott (FillTheFreezer), I missed having someone to bounce ideas off of, and I must say I prefer hunting with a partner, but I know now that I can do it without problem.
On this misses: The first bear was the first case of buck fever I've ever had. There's not much else to say about the situation then I rushed it. I used a subpar rest when there were better available if I would have spent 30 seconds looking around. I imposed an unnecessary sense of urgency I hope to not ever encounter again.
The second bear, very well could have been the same as the first, the meadow I caught him in was at the top of the drainage he ran into. Which made for some comical comments from my friends afterwords, "HEY, I can't shake this guy!"
I was good, and relaxed on him, even though there was a true sense of urgency. I had probably 3 minutes from spot to timber to get a shot off. I spent 2.5 minutes ranging, and calming down for my shot. The bolt wasn't completely engaged and so when I squeezed the trigger it clicked and the bolt slammed down. It even left a dimple on the round, just not enough to engage the blasting cap. So then I had seconds to reevaluate my shot, get on him and fire. I panicked a little bit and just missed.
Regardless, I think it's inspired me to limit any issues I may have at long range including adding a break, turrets, reticle change, and limbsaver.
Overall Feelings: This is two major trips in a row that I have drastically increased my hunting and backpacking knowledge. It was my second favorite hunting trip of my life. It was a battle of weather (we had snow to 70), grit, extreme highs and drastic lows emotionally, and camaraderie and adventure without equal.
Our overall motto is not to become old men without stories. This trip was one for the books. If you guys have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them, and thank you for following me along on this trip, it was a blast doing a live hunt, and I'll likely do it again for Colorado Archery Elk this fall.
-
Great stuff. I'm heading over next week for the first of two weeks and this was really helpful. Thanks for taking the time to put this up.
-
I'd skip the loudener, unless you've got a giant magnum, then I'd get a smaller round.
Turret is it, but just 1 for elevation. You can hold wind, or don't shoot.
A clean duplex reticle seems best to me. Noisy reticles seem cool till the moment of truth. Then not so much. We hunters just don't get to practice enough to have them engrained in our muscle memory.
If you don't have time to range and dial, you don't have time to shoot that far.
Set a 250 zero so anything inside of 300 is in point blank range.
Shoot a bullet with a high BC so wind guesses aren't as critical. Bullet drop is science, wind drift is voodoo.
Starbucks via, idahoan potatoes, the tuna sandwich mix in the foil packs, Lipton instant soup, ect.... Lots of stuff to fill the tummy.
-
Good stuff, Silk. Honest and to the point.
-
Awesome breakdown silk. Thanks for sharing the lessons learned.

Blasting cap? You shooting a long range muzzle loader ?
-
Thanks for sharing your trip with us Silk! Sounds like you had one hell of a hunt. Great hunts don't always end with dead animals. But with the effort you put forth I'm thinking you'll have a 2015 bear down soon enough.

Turret would be for range only.
Break greatly reduces recoil which on my Tikka would be fantastic!
Zero is already 250.
Many of those food options are nice, but aren't efficient. I've got about 100 nights in a sleeping bag over the last three years, and while I'm not an expert, I feel I've spent enough time to earn an opinion.
Coffee, soup, potatoes, etc are just extra boils, time, and lower available water for me to drink. Not to mention extra fuel which may necessitate bringing another fuel canister.
I love coffee, but I'd rather sleep an extra twenty minutes, hence chocolate covered coffee beans.
The reason I'm so happy with my food this trip is I feel the flavor and variety was fantastic while keeping my calories at or around MY necessary calorie needs.

Great write up. Almost feels like we were right there with you! That blonde would have been awesome. Are you gonna get back out there at some point?

I do the jetboil, boiling water in a bag deal. I only cook dinner. Coffee can be made in minutes sitting on a glassing point, or skipped. I love the spuds to fill the tummy. Nice to go to sleep full. But everyone's different.
Cool that your getting your kit figured out. Seems it's a constantly evolving aspect of backpack hunting.
What's your Tikka chambered in?

That's a great clambering. For me it's too much from a light rifle. I did it for years, but it was just never fun. I stepped down to 270wsm, and last year back up to 7mmwsm. A 168 grainier at 3k from a light rifle seems to be the line between fun and not fun for me. I still kinda miss the 140's at 3k though.
Hopefully the brake is the solution your looking for.
You get any postable pics of the blonde?
I'm still holding out waiting for the grip and grin. That much effort and desire, I can't see you staying away when you live so close.

Thought I did, but the heat waves destroyed it. Scott tried to clean up the one I had, but most of our focus at that point was whether to go after him or not.

Awesome write up.
I also appreciate the notes on gear and food as that is always something I think about.
With regards to food, I have recently purchased a dehydrator and for dinners which I cook, I have started dehydrating my own meals. Daunting at first but the end result can be amazing! A serving of home made turkey chili mac weighs in at about 4 oz for me once dehydrated.
I have also found some "no cook" home made dehydrated lunches that are just add water to rehydrate for a bit in your pack before you get hungry.
Sounds like an awesome adventure and thanks for sharing!

Tried to clean it up, but its pretty low res the way you loaded it and I'm not real sure where in the photo your looking. Looks like might be the bear in the upper left, facing up and left, just left of the tall looking tree?

Tried to clean it up, but its pretty low res the way you loaded it and I'm not real sure where in the photo your looking. Looks like might be the bear in the upper left, facing up and left, just left of the tall looking tree?

Nope of you follow it to the right and the first "lighter" patch you see, that's him.
It was my I phone through my spotter at around 2-3 miles by the crow fly. When I get back to my computer I'll see if I can get a more accurate distance.

Sweet, Im rooting for you!!!. I'm gunning for the 30th myself, maybe that next weekend as well. Might be rubbed up by then, but that's just less weight to pack out and claws that don't need to stay with the hide.

Went and put another 25 rounds through the rifle this morning. Feel good about the session! Bring on the long range!

Thats the best one to go after! Awesome color, and smaller so you have less meat to pack and eat. :chuckle: cheaper rug also. Go get em!
-
Nice work. Pretty bear!
-
Go put the smack down on one silk!
-
I'd have gone after that one! Would have draped over the back of the couch nicely.
But if jug head is the goal, then jug head is the goal.
Good luck man. Aim small.

Just got a text from Travis...they're on a bear, waiting for him to show himself. Sounds like a nice one.
-
KILL BEARS SOON!
I wanna see a big pretty color phase out of all of your effort.
Knock down a brute!
-
Man small or not I would have made a run for that blonde.
-
There's apparently a big blond sow with a bigger blond boar in the trees.

This is very intense. At least the part about WTS rifle. :chuckle:

No shots fired......no BBD....they lost track of the bear in the timber.

I can't post picture yet, not good enough service. We spotted a boar and sow, both blonde 3/4 mile across the canyon.
We dropped 1500 ft, and went up around 700 in 40 min flat. When ran a finger ridge up to get into position. The Sow was still out feeding and I had her pegged at 425 yards for 15 minutes. But after seeing that boar...he was a pig.
She eventually went into the slide alder and bedded down.
We then sat on that alder patch for twelve hours waiting for them to show themselves, to no avail.
Today's a new day!

Absolutely, even though it's not the biggest bear, it's the most worked for this spring. Many tags went unfilled this year. Time for another shot!!

So this bear was not the bear I had in mind when I drew Wenaha. That bear I missed. Twice. That's on me, and the only thing I can do is keep getting better every year. This little guy was my refusal to let this tag go unfilled. I had probably 6 hours left of hunt time before my season was over, and while I passed on many bears that were significantly bigger, this guy was my own trophy.
So I'll start with Luke Carrick. I've been talking with Luke here and there for about a year on Spring strategies, locations, etc. I noticed he got some flak here on Hunt Wa about him being "too good to be true." I hadn't had anything but good vibes from him, and when our schedules worked out I asked if he wanted to swing a final spring weekend. He let me know he was free this weekend and I made it happen.
I'll say this, if anyone draws a tag in the Wenaha, Bear or Elk, look up Luke. Not only is his knowledge and dedication second to none, he's just about the nicest guy I've met and his drive for success is top notch. His only goal is to be in the woods and see success.
So Luke had a good lead on a location and he swung through and picked me up Thursday mid-day. We got setup to class around 530 pm and the canyon we were glassing was alive with deer and elk. Finally a small cinnamon popped out and fed his way around the mountain for the rest of the evening. Wasn't worth really going after, and we had a few days left.
Friday morning was fun. We spotted the pair of blondes and we decided they were worth going after. That boar especially was a shooter.
We dropped down 1500 ft into the canyon and raced back up another 700 to get even with the pair. We made it in 40 minutes flat.
We got to a perfect shooting situation, was prone with that sow in my sights for 15-20 minutes. We were trying hard to find that big boy, and eventually she fed into the alders to bed down. We then proceeded to sit on those alders all day. The sun was killer.
At around 415 pm, Luke says, "Their Up!" I glance up and see a giant sow through an opening. We realize it's not the same one. Then...two cute little cubs pop out behind her. She starts feeding through, and then backtracks with the cubs out of there. Only thing we could think was she winded those other two bears and didn't want her cubs near them. She then proceeded to herd them back out of the alder into the next finger.
As dark approached we started the trek back to camp. 2 hours later we were back, outsmarted.
Saturday approaches and we setup on the canyon again. Day is starting to warm up to be a smoker, and we see a small blonde work her way across the hillside and bed down in the alders.
We decide she's not worth the death march into the canyon, and Luke wants to check out a spot he hasn't been in before, but had seen sign while glassing from another location.
We get over there and find a ton of sign working through the timber, finally finding a glassing spot in the shade. After about two hours we hear a rock roll right below us. We perk up and watch the timber below us. It all goes quiet again. About 45 minutes later, another rock. Luke says he can hear something moving through the timber. This has happened to me a few times while in the Wenaha, it's been a deer or elk everytime. I turned to Luke and say, "I don't know man, I just have a feeling that's a deer or elk, that's the impression I get."
Luke says, "Eh, I don't know...got a good feeling."
5 minutes later I'm proven to be wrong (my wife would say this comes as no surprise).
Luke says, "BEAR!" followed by, "Ah he's just a little guy, not a shooter."
I turned to him, "I'm ok with a little guy, I'm out of time."
Plus...94 yards and a 2 mile flat walk back to camp, and no time left to hunt made it easy.
Ranged, dialed, dead.
We made it back to camp and proceeded to drink and *censored* around a fire for the rest of the night, and headed home today.
I'm going to soft tan the hide and put it in my sons room, he thinks it's pretty cool. The skull is getting bleached and will add to my other skull. 3 more skulls to go until I can do my display project I have in mind.
Thanks again for following along everyone. I have no idea how many miles I put into this tag, probably close to 50, with around 34k feet of total gain/loss. This country is unforgiving and brutal. I love it.
