My son drew a Lincoln Spring bear tag and we have read the thread from last year on here about the Lincoln tag. Any help at all would be appreciated. I've sent to Weyerhaeuser asking about their access. I live in Yelm and had put in for Kapowsin and checked prior to applying with Hancock, but he lives in Centralia and put Lincoln as his 2nd choice and drew.
Thanks

I was informed by Weyco that they would be opening the gates to all the areas that are open for the permit hunting at least a week prior to the season. No access permit will be required, as they expired at the end of January.
-
Thanks very much. Are you hunting that unit? He has taken a pretty nice WV black bear a couple of years ago. This will be his first time hunting in Washington, although he followed me around muzzy elk last year.
-
Thats cool !!
How old is your son?
What weapon will he be hunting with ?
Does he have any other hunting experience ?
What about you ?
Ever hunted bear before ?

Pics?
We love pics..

He will be 28 in two days. He grew up in Colorado and Utah when I worked there with the NPS. I've only missed 3 seasons in 25 or so years now of elk hunting in CO and my sons have been on a good bit of them.
This year I spent archery deer looking for where I wanted to elk hunt and not really to concerned with deer. Found areas we liked around the middle of muzzy and had cap not fire on recently removed 209 primer muzzy when finally getting within 45 yards of a nice 5x5 bull. Felt like that was good for first year of learning to hunt elk in these thick PNW mountains.
Both my sons have killed bears on plum creek timber leases that I had in WV.
-
Another from muzzy season.
-
I drew a Lincoln permit two years ago and I got one about third week of season walking old grades. It was eating grass. But the area I hunted up Bunker creek is off limits now because it is part of Weyerhauser lease. Friend of mine got a bear year before I did early in season walking old roads.
-
I got email from Weyerhauser Forest Manager and he stated that the area open to hunting will be posted on the WDFW site any time now. He also like Torrent50 mentioned above that gates will be open the week before season.
Sons pumped about the tag and figures it was an early B-day present.
I'll try to find some pics of the bear he got in WV years ago. Here's a good bear from game camera in CO a couple years ago.
-
And another.
-
Had it a few years back. Some good sign only a few miles in but no bear. One pile of bear scat was big around as a pop can. Seen a good buck. Good luck. As others have said walk the old roads grass will be going good.
-
If you can find a spot like the bear picture pond area. Elk area old peels lots Walk the grades you will find a bear. I missed one and seen one last year. Rick

2 7003 ALADDIN NOT SELECTED

4 7015 MONROE NOT SELECTED
would have preferred Skagit but ill take what I can get. hope I can fill my tag, this is my second year bear hunting and will be hunting with a bow. good luck to all who drew tags.
-
I've never hunted this area or bears but plan to stick to the roads. Anyone else using a bow? Any information on access. TY
-
Me and a buddy also got drawn. Should be fun to learn the area.
-
Anyone know about using crossbows?
-
Anyone know about using crossbows?
Modern firearm season in a restricted firearm area is allowed.
-
Thanks ghost! I see that 501 is not a firearm restricted area, but the hunting method for spring bears is any legal weapon. To me that says crossbows are okay. true?
-
Crossbows are not legal for hunting big game- yet. That will change this year, but I don't think the revised law will take effect until sometime after the spring bear season is over.

In firearm restriction areas during modern firearm season, yes they are. But that's not what we're talking about here.

:chuckle: :chuckle: :dunno:
-
So i assume, to use a crossbow this spring you still need a doctors note or whatever
-
Just got a letter explaining some details about our area and a map for access. wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/bear_cougar/education/blackbear.php
-
Looking at the map at all the green open access. Is all this going to be drivable when the season starts??
-
 Went for a drive today
-
So I did not draw Lincoln but will be in the area a lot looking for sheds and scouting. I know the area like the back of my hand. If any of you fellas need a little help I would be more than happy to share what I see. Or if you see me and the lab or English setter stop and say hello.

Havent got anything except my card from wdfw.

wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/bear_cougar/education/blackbear.php (http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/bear_cougar/education/blackbear.php)
I think that should work...
I was not drawn, but have spent a little time up there...
Was drawn a few years ago and got "played" by this one.. :bash:
-
i am new to the area. got drawn for a tag. will start scouting this weekend and ALL of the week April 6-10. is any area of the map better or worse for finding sign? NW, NE, SW, SE area of the map?
-
It won't let you look at the map if not selected. Is the map the same as years past.

I have seen bear in almost every part of this unit. I tend to hunt the swamps and old grassy roads in reprod the size they will be looking to peal In. There is also some good spots in the northwest and south west to glass clear-cuts. I can't wait to get out and look around. The gates were locked up when I came home from work tonight.

Can I ride a mountain bike or a rokon behind a closed gate?

You can ride a bike or walk yes.

So. I don't think I can actually scout until April 15. Which means hunt. Is that correct no access until April 15?

I was told that they would open the gates to the area that is open for bear about a week prior to the season for scouting.

Anyplace I can call to check or confirm. I have all week off next week.

That area is part of the Pe Ell tree farm and right now it's open for recreational access- no permit required. So you can scout next week. You will most likely have to park at a gate and walk in, but you can certainly scout!
From the Weyerhaeuser website:
"Washington: PeEll - Non-motorized access is allowed (no permit needed) from Feb. 1 to July 31, 2015. 2014 Permit Holders- No need to return your key, permit or hangtag. Please recycle or throw away.

Awesome. Thanks so much. Washington and private land is new to me. Use to national forests and wilderness areas. Hopefully I helped the thread by adding the map. It was a challenge but I got it converted. Any turkeys in the same area as the bear hunting.

Yes there are some turkeys in that area, at least there used to be. Probably not very likely that you'll see any though.
-
I emailed weyerhaeuser.....the gates will be open for vehicle Use Using the regular green dot system. This will also be the last year for free access they will be going to a year round permit access starting august 1

Have. Question. About a sound that is foreign to me. It starts out as a dull thud followed by thud thud followed by thud thud thud followed by thud thud thud thud thud thud thud thud. I no that sounds weird. The other way I can describe it is similar to when you spin a quarter on a table and how it eventually wobbles and falls down. Imagine doing that with a circular disk of wood. I have heard this sound each time I have been out and each time on multiple occasions.

The top one looks like claw marks above the peel/rub. The small tree in the second picture maybe a deer rub. I actual got a sense that a cub did the smaller one. I think these two were next to each other. I hunted huge whitetails all my life in Kansas. NEVER saw a rub on a tree as big as in a couple of the pics I posted. I should say RARELY. but still I do not know anything about blacktails. Other than that there racks are smaller. tup

I got this reply back from Weyer.
For this year you will not need an access pass for the spring bear hunt. This will however, be the last year of 6 month permits as we are planning on going to full year permits starting August 2015 that will run through July of the following year. Next permit season 2015/2016 will require an access permit to hunt spring bear if WDFW still has the season.
As to access for the spring bear hunt. The only ground that will be open will be the Bunker Cr. block, the Harp Road block, and that part of the Coyote crest C-line that is in the Lincoln unit. The other areas within that GMU are leased year round so access is restricted to the lease holder. Once again, we will open the access gates for the available ground about one week prior to the beginning of the hunt.
I see Bunker Creek on GPS Huntmap, but can't find Harp Road or Coyote Crest C-line. Any help for access from Dryad or Doty would be appreciated.
Thanks
James

Yep, coyote

Harp road is the north end of the Lincoln unit, off Brooklyn Road. Look just a few miles west of Oakville. The C line would be west and south of Harp Road. It's off Garrard Creek road. Be careful if you go in that way- you'll be in the Fall River GMU, not Lincoln. Although if you drive far enough you can get back into the Lincoln unit, but again, be careful because you'll likely be on DNR land and not Weyerhaeuser, at least at first. And I think you can only hunt Weyerhaeuser, correct? The C line is probably not the best way to get in to where you want to hunt.

Good directions but the coyote crest c-line is the border for the Lincoln unit. So one side of the road is open one side is not.

Also it is Weyerhaeuser land as soon as you go through the gate on the c-line.

Yes, I guess you're right about the boundary, I looked on the GoHunt map. They must have changed that recently. The boundary used to be another road further to the southeast.
-
Ya at fist I thought you might have mixed up the c-line off garrard creek and the c-3000 off Lincoln creek. The c-3000 is state land until you get up to the very top.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
That would be the L-3000, I do know that much. But yeah, good to know they moved the boundary to the C Line. Like you said, it'll be Lincoln on the left and Fall River on the right.
-
Thanks for clearing that up for me. We should be able to find our way in now.
-
I got the same response from Weyco earlier in the year but when I look at the map that the permit holders can access it shows all of the Weyco land in the Lincoln unit as shaded green which the legend says is open with no restrictions. There is a large lease up near Bunker Creek, but according to that map everything else is open. Basically east of the 7000 line out of Doty off Elk Creek Rd.
The map that Weyco provided last year with the permits shows a different boundary for the Lincoln unit though. The whole C line and C-7000 area shows as being in Fall River on that map but in Lincoln on the one for the bear permits. Gets pretty confusing.
-
Just looked at the new regs looks like this will be the last year of this tag

If I bring a buddy who doesn't have a spring bear tag (just for safety purposed) but he has a small game license can he hunt for those while I hunt for bear? This may be a stupid question. We are going to be together, we won't be separating during the hunt but we were wondering, like I said, since he doesn't have spring bear tag, would he be able to hunt other game in the lincoln unit?
-
I wouldn't want somebody shooting at small game if I were out trying to bear hunt.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If he has a valid small game license and only shoots critters that are in season. You won't have any problems.
-
Yes, anybody can hunt out there right now. Might even be some turkey hunters.
-
Thanks all. Made our day. No worries we both have bows. cant wait.
-
What could he hunt right now without a bear tag? Turkeys, coyotes, ??

Went out this morning. 300 yards down the trail. Behind a locked gate. I hear an ATV. a guy and his 3 year old kid. Pulls right up to me. I say uh I don't think your posed to have them atvs back here. His response ya I know but I came in on a trail. Genius. I say. You know the gate is locked. You know it is illegal. You are speaking face to face with the person that is doing stuff right. The person whose hard work and effort you are totally messing up. I tell him that I am trying to spring bear hunt. He then says. Well I was headed that way but I guess I will turn around. Real genius. Should have snapped s pic. I know he lives close. There were no other trucks.

yea. You will get that on the Westside with all the locked gates. Pretty crumby deal to walk six miles just to see a quad. Pretty sad that he does this stuff with the kid. one of my family members was hiked into a gate and a dirt bike came by. Same deal the guy had his kid. He tore into him about what a pos he was to teach his kid that stuff. I would have snapped pics. or filmed it.
Another one I think is real funny is they post no trespass signs on the quad trails leading into privately owned timber farms. Theres one were I elk hunt. The home owner came over half a mile from her home and walked pasted the gate I was sitting at eating. She walked a little ways past and turned back towards me. After she went back past with a big grin on her face and got out of sight she shoulders her rifle and shoots 5 rounds. this was the opener for archery elk. Its like they buy the house close by and every acre within 50 mile is theres.
-
No bears for 2 straight days. Tried some calling and nothing. The view is awesome
No tracks no poop, 4 deer. Seems weird to me
-
It's still early in the year. I think you'll see a lot more sign beginning in mid-May.
-
Went out this morning for a while. Saw some poop and had a couple nice walks. Saw some deer and got pretty close to a bald eagle, but no yogi's.
-
Went out tonight. Hiked 7 miles but just on main roads. A little on grassy spur roads. Dry coyote poo and deer kicking each other with their front feet at dusk.

The report for tonight is there were gates open that previously were not. Some gates still locked. Saw a Blacktail deer on the road no bear prints poo or other sign. Was a different area again for me. The only area I have not been in on is off Doty road. Thanks for the tip that was sent via pm. I sure need em.

Get off the roads. You will see a ton of sign in the clear cuts and swamp bottoms. first time I walked through a clear cut in there I couldn't help but step in bear scat. probably six different piles in the first few hundred yards. just stick to it and you'll kill one.

I doubt that was ever allowed under Weyerhaeuser's rules.

How about the bait bucket hanging in the tree. Various sizes holes in the bucket. Obvious bait bucket. Should I call it in? whats in the bucket ? kinda strange to bait bears with a white 5 gal bucket...pretty obvious stuff. i know a guy who baits deer with big tubs of peanut butter hung in trees..puts holes in it so the peanut butter can drip out and he's pretty successful doing it. i even think i heard that ass-hat canadian guide who bear hunts vancouver island talk about doing it up there for deer.

Teeth marks on the bucket.

Hunting bears with the use of bait is legal for timber companies with a depredation permit.
It could also be someone using bait in order to get pictures for their trail camera.
I wouldn't report it. I think WDFW officers have more important things to do.

Found a nice looking spot today with this as well as a few other piles scattered around. What do you think? Big Yote, Kitty, or Yogi? I'm not used to looking for bear crap in the spring. In the fall it's all full of berries and easy to distinguish.

Went to a different set of roads off the same main line. Walked about twenty yards and was "attacked" by a very "injured" forest grouse. The dang thing was flopping, strutting like a turkey, and making an awful noise. At the same time I looked down at my feet and saw three chicks running around. I could have caught all three. I tried to get a pic instead. The chick is the yellow spot that appears when the picture is zoomed in. Got to a fork on this spur and was greeted with a commotion in the woods and a guttural. Oof oof. Oof. Mother bear stayed put at thirty yards. Twenty yards into the brush. Cub took off. I observed for a minute and began to back out. Got visual confirmation of the yearling cub twenty yards into the woods on the other side of the road. Very awesome.
